May 28 - Ueno Park & Akihabara

We all know I love parks. I went so far as to study plants in school, so you know I'm always down for a botanical adventure. This park was totally beautiful. Aside from being huge and having a marketplace, a zoo, and a big shrine, the pathways were so green and peaceful! Ueno Park is famous for its cherry trees, and during March you'll find tons of people there for flower viewing, or ohanami. Right now, though, the cherry trees are just green. That's fine for me, though, because there were also a bunch of lilies and carp in the pond and we had a great time wandering around.

Academic Reflection

Seeing the ornate shrine of the Tokugawa shogunate was actually pretty eye-opening. From what we've seen of Japanese culture, the great things tend to be found and repurposed. This shrine, though, was built with gold-plated everything and intricate carvings and all kinds of fancy shmancy decorations. It's a shock to see just how much the shoguns could flex when they wanted to. The museum was similar. Most of the things in there were scrolls, pottery, or kimono, but some of the samurai armor was pretty extravagant. The statues of Buddhist figures (which are not allowed to be photographed) are also very luxurious. I

As for Akihabara, what can I say? We've been living here for a week and a half so I'd seen just about everything. It's somewhat shocking at first to see a maid every fifty feet trying to get you to go to a particular cafe, but I'm used to it now. The giant anime posters and such are nothing new either. But the reading we did on otaku culture was kind of different? I don't know, I really disagree with the author on a lot of his psychology interpretations and so I didn't really try to relate it to what we saw. However, I will agree with the author in that the otaku love to parody. We saw two giant stores (one for boys and one for girls) of just (pornographic) fanfiction and it was an experience. I didn't go in, but they were poppin.
