Key to your heart
3.6k college!AU of you and Yoongi being sarcastic af to each other but also kissingÂ
or
One year later and you still havenât quite figured out who this Yoongi guy is, and where your relationship with him stands. (Sequel to Donât forget your keys)
A/N: @coifn Thanks for the request and I hope you like it! [More notes at the end]
*RA stands for residence assistant or residence advisor
âSo youâre going to be a RA* this year?â
You shrug, grabbing your wallet and keys and stuffing them in your bag. âItâs just so that I donât have to go through with finding housing and all that this year. Easier to just stay on residence, you know?â
The extreme heat of the dying summer has you breaking into a sweat after carrying the boxes of stuff into what will be your room for the next eight months of university. Itâs the same residence as last yearâonly this time youâve been blessed with having your own room. Your ex-roommate, Eunmi, and her boyfriend, Taehyung, have moved out for your second year, and as much as youâd miss seeing her so often, you were extremely glad that youâd finally be able to have your own space.
Thereâd be no messes on the floor and nothing that could potentially trip anyone.
âOkay, Iâm ready,â you say, ushering the two of them out of the room before turning to lock the door. âLetâs go.â
âOh yeah, what happened to you and Yoongi?â
That startles you for a second. âWhatâwho?â
Min Yoongi. The blond asshole with the lifeless skin and permanent smirk on his lips and eyebrows too dark to match with his platinum blond bangs.
âWait youâre dating Yoongi? Like, the Min Yoongi?â Taehyung stops dead in his steps.
âWhy? Whatâs up with him?â You frown. âWhat, is he famous or something?â
âHe'sââ
âNo, but like, you know,â Eunmi cuts her boyfriend off, âafter that time, we were just wondering what happened to you guys. Havenât seen you together or anything.â
To be honest, you werenât completely sure of the nature of your relationship either. After that incident last year, youâd been torn between wanting to avoid him forever and wanting to see him more often. It was an odd feelingâlike he really was an old friend that you wanted to tell everything to, despite not knowing each other any more than strangers did, yet wanting to hate him for causing you all this grief for the rest of your first year in university.
Friendship would be too tight of a term to define such a loose relationship, and acquaintances didnât seem right either. Perhaps rivals would be a better term.
Eunmi gasps. âWait, donât tell me you guys are âeff-double U- beeâ.â
âWhat does that even mean?â
âFriends with benefits,â Taehyung whispers a little too loudly.
You nearly choke on your spit. âW-what?!â
âItâs totally cool,â she nods enthusiastically, âwe wonât judge.â
âNo, no youâve got it wrong. I donât even like the guy. Heâs a total asshole.â
âSeriously?â Eunmi lowers her sunglasses and peers at you. âWell he sure seems like heâs into you. Isnât he, Tae?â
Taehyung nods, âYeah, Min Yoongi doesnât even like people. Like, ever. But you seem to be the exception.â
âWait, Taehyung, how do you even know him?â
He simply shrugs at that and it ends this strange conversation.
Maybe that shouldâve been a sign that youâd run into him again. Despite the way you guys texted occasionallyâthough you were never the one to start the conversations; you made sure of thatâyou hadnât planned on ever seeing Yoongi so soon in this new school year. Or maybe ever.
With orientations and move-ins going on during the week before school started, there were bound to be numerous parties occurring in the apartment-style rooms. A first year named Jungkook had invited Taehyung, which meant he was taking his girlfriend, and that ultimately meant that Eunmi was going to bring you along too.
Putting on one of your fancier outfits, you rush out of your room and find yourself dragged by the arm latched onto yours. The party is loud and you could hear the faint bass of the music vibrating against the hallway walls, and it makes you wonder if this is the kind of stuff youâre supposed to be reprimanding first years for, as a RA.
Thereâs food and thereâs alcohol, loud music and all too many people crowded in their living room. There are squeals and booming voices and too much body heat pressing into the already burning summer air. Itâs not ideal, but you figure that recognizing what kinds of parties need to be stopped would help you with your job very soon.
âOh, you must be Y/N!â A boy with large doe eyes shows up beside you at the food table. âItâs nice to meet you! Iâm Jungkook.â
âAh, so youâre Jungkook.â How he knows your name, you may never know. âUm, thanks for inviting me⌠I guess.â
âItâs no problem; you can join us anytime.â Thereâs a bright smile on his face and he awkwardly chuckles. âYou live on this floor too, right?â
âYeah, Iâm in that RA room at the end of the hallâŚâ
Thatâs when you spot him from across the room.
He makes his way over to where you stand, and with the raising of one eyebrow in Jungkookâs direction, the poor first year is slowly slinking away from you.
You almost wanted to go after him.
âFunny running into you here.â His eyes twinkle as they meet yours and you donât even have to look at him to know thereâs a smirk on his face again. He passes you a drink. âIâve actually missed seeing you around.â
âSorry, I canât exactly say the same.â
âWhy does your shirt have so many pockets?â Yoongi sips his drink while giving you a glance-over. âSo you can store your backup keys?â
You stifle a groan. Itâs high fashion, dumbass. âItâs been a year and weâre still not over this?â Shooting him a glare, you self-consciously cross your arms. âAnd yes, theyâre to store all my keys⌠keys to your heart.â
âOuch, I almost felt something from that.â He clutches at his chest dramatically. âBut the last time I checked, you didnât have them with you.â
âHey you know what? Why donât we head back to my room?â
âFor what?â He narrows his eyes in suspicion and you internally chastise yourself for thinking heâd be one of those guys who would agree without hesitation.
âSo I can finally bust your ass for being in this building without permission.â
He laughs loudly at that, eyes closing and head thrown back. âAh, youâre so cute. I do live here, you know.â
You sigh, ignoring the first part of his sentence completely, âAre we still arguing about this?â
âI donât know. You were pretty persistent about that last year.â Yoongiâs signature smirk is pasted back on his lips. âWell, Y/N, it was nice seeing you again, and Iâm sure weâll be seeing a lot more of each other soon.â
âWhat do you mean?â
He shrugs, âYouâll see.â
Frosh week. Thatâs what he meant.
Being a RA meant you not only had to participate in residence bonding activities with the rest of your floor during frosh week, but you had to lead them through these games. That meant everything from the lame ice breakers to the obstacle course challenges, and the crazy dares and bets.
âSo todayâs team bonding activity involves competing with another floor. Whichever team gets the most points will winâŚâ you pause to squint at the instruction sheet you were given, ââŚextra guest sign-in passes.â
Itâs hot outside and despite the small patch of shade that youâve managed to steal a seat from, youâd much rather not be here. Your memories of last yearâs bonding activities werenât too great, and if it wasnât for Eunmiâs constant sarcastic remarks chirping beside you, youâre not sure how youâd have survived.
A round of cheers sounds from your fifth floor team, and they nearly drown out the sound of the approaching teamâprobably the fourth floor, from what your instructions told you.
âWeâll be competing against the fourth floor today, and the residence council member, Seokjin, will be the judge.â
A tall and fairly handsome guy stepped up to the front of the field. âItâs nice to meet everyone today. Iâm Seokjin, a fifth year student who should be graduating soon.â He flashes a smile at the audience crammed under the shadow of the tree. âWell since the fourth floor is here now, why donât we get the RAs to introduce themselves?â
And thatâs when you notice him for the second time this week.
Pale skin and a body that youâd almost call scrawny, the blond asshole, whoâs no longer blond, walks to the front of the field. His hair is jet black now, bangs now the same shade as those sharp, dark eyes, and probably the colour of his soul as well.
âIâm Yoongi,â he drawls lazily, âfourth year sound engineering. Been a Residence Assistant here for way too long and my floor wins every year, so you all better work hard today.â Then somehow, his eyes find their way to yours and stay there, fixed. âThose free guest check-in passes will do you well because if you sneak someone in, I will catch you.â
You couldnât believe what you were hearing.
Min Yoongi. RA of this building. RA last year, when he saw you trying to get into the building. RA when he watched you forget your keys all too many times and when he teased you and when you probably insulted him back. RA when you showed him your room and when he tripped and whenâ
âY/N?â Seokjinâs voice pulls you out of your thoughts and you look up to see Yoongiâs gaze still on you intently.
âUm, yeah, so Iâm Y/N, second year undeclared major. And, uh, I decided to be a RA to try something new.â
âGreat! So today your teams will be competing for free guest check-in passes for the whole floor. Weâll start off with ice breakers within your teams so that you can get to know each other better first. Then weâll move on to the real competition.â Seokjin exclaims, waving his arms around. âOkay, letâs go!â
As you slowly follow the rest of your team to the bigger field, a pair of footsteps fall in time with yours.
âSo, I told you weâd be seeing each other again soon.â
It was still difficult to process. You think back to when Eunmi and Taehyung were asking you about him earlier this week, and how they both seemed to know things about Yoongi when you hadnât exactly revealed anything. Taehyung had seemed to imply Yoongi was famous or something, which would make sense because youâre technically supposed to know the RAs of your building⌠and Yoongi had known the buildingâs rules quite well.
But then there was that incident last year that you remember all too clearly. When he tripped over your roommateâs stuff and fell onto youâŚ
âAh, sorry. I just, uh, didnât think these residence beds would be this soft.â His eyes flicker away from yours as he starts shifting away uncomfortably.
âWhat do you mean, isnât your bed the same?â
He freezes where he is, staring back at you.
âAre you saying that you donât actually live here?â You creep a little closer to him, scrutinizing him carefully. âAre you saying that you donât live on campus residence at all?â
He looks away, mouth settling into a scowl.
âMin Yoongi! Thatâs a hundred dollars for being caughtââ
âHello? Y/N?â A hand appears in your field of view. âWhat are you daydreaming about?â
âNot you, thatâs for sure,â you mutter under your breath.
He chuckles, âGlad itâs mutual then. Come on, letâs go watch your team lose.â
Asshole.
You settle in under a tree, finally sitting after half a day of going through all of the those ice breakers. It was a small patch of shade, the sunlight flickering through the shadow of the sparse leaves every time the wind rustles. Maybe thatâs why you didnât expect it when he sits down right beside you, the entire side of his body pressed against yours. Â
âCome on guys! Are you not going to participate at all?â Seokjin comes back from cheering the two teams on with what looked like flashlights in his hands, and sits down in the shad, forcibly squeezing between the two of you.
From the corner of your eye, you can see Yoongiâs previous smile turn into an immediate scowl. âWhy should we have to participate in this? Weâve already done the ice breakers. Besides, we donât even have another person on our teams to pair up with.â
âOh come on, youâre so boring.â Seokjin waves the flashlights some more. âHead to knee!â He shouts at the two lines of first years standing across from each other. âYou guys should pair up with each other and just join the challenge for fun.â
âFun,â Yoongi snorts. âYes, because touching random body parts is fun.â
âHand to shoulder!â Seokjin screeches again. âOh no! You two on the rightââ He waved his arms wildly, gesturing to those he was addressing, âYouâre eliminated!â Then he turns back to Yoongi. âCome on, get up and go, you two, council memberâs orders.â
Grudgingly, Yoongi gets up and actually heads over to where the students were. You follow him to your position across from him, and you see the focused look in his eye when he stares back at you, his lips pressed tightly and clearly showing how unamused he was.
âFoot to foot!â
Yoongi was oddly competitive. You can see the way he zones in on Seokjinâs every word, attempting to run as fast as possible the moment he hears the next mission. You definitely expected it though, with how you remember arguing stubbornly with him all too much.
âHand to cheek!â
The game shouldnât have been too difficultâall you need to do is be fast at matching your pose to whatever was being shouted. But as the challenges gradually got stranger and stranger, you start having second thoughts about why youâre even doing this, especially if itâs with him.
This one left the two of you standing in the field, seemingly cupping each otherâs cheeks. When Yoongiâs eyes met yours, the gesture seemed more intimate than youâd care to admit, and whatâs odder was the briefest flutter you felt when he slowly dropped his gaze. It shouldnât be there, not after all happened last year.
More and more pairs got eliminated, and that only made you more determined to stay in the gameâdespite how you and Yoongi entered late and that it wouldnât count towards your teamâs points anyway.
âLip to lip!â
There was just the briefest second of hesitation that barely registered before the two of you were practically kissing, lips melded against lips, hands caressing jaws to ensure it was done properly and that there would be no chance of elimination.
No, it wasnât a proper kiss. Your eyes werenât closed and your mouths werenât even that close with only the corners fully touching. It was nowhere as real as last yearâs so there was really no reason for your heart to hammer against your chest or for your skin to heat up even more than under the burn of the sun.
But as you stayed frozen in position waiting for Seokjin to announce whoâs being eliminated this round, Yoongi shifted slightly. The tilting of his head carefully pressed his lips even closer to yours, and one of his hands wrapped around your waist so that you wouldnât be struggling on your tippy-toes the whole time.
Just as the world starts to disappear, a loud laugh makes you jump apart. You quickly turn to see Seokjin bouncing around with the flashlights in his hands.
âCongratulations! Thereâs no elimination this round because you guys were the only pair left anyway. Ten points to Gryffindor!â
If youâd thought Yoongi was bad, this Seokjin guy was at least a hundred times worse.
Your evening shift for signing guests in overlapped with Yoongiâs, and by this point, you werenât even surprised that the universe kept deciding to do this. At least there wouldnât be Seokjin here to make a mess of things, you think.
âHere, just fill out this form please,â you say for the thousandth time, pasting another smile on your face. Then you look up and realize who it was. âOh, hey Jungkook.â
âHi, Y/N.â He ducks down and doesnât meet your eyes as he stares at the form all too intently. The guest behind him is one of his friends you met last week at their partyâJimin? âUm, my roommates are having another party tonight so if youâre free later, stop by?â
âMhm,â you take the form from him, passing his friend a guest wristband. âThanks for the invite; Iâll consider.â
âWhat kind of first year invites his RAs over to his party?â Yoongi mutters under his breath after the two of them leave. âAnyway, our shift is over. Do you want to go grab something to eat?â
âHmm do you think Jungkookâs place will have food?â
He groans at your words, rubbing his eyes. âYou really want to hang out with first years?â
âYou want me to hang out with a fourth year instead?â
âFine.â Yoongi rolls his eyes. âOkay, just let me put all this stuff away first and then weâll go.â
âOh, so youâre coming with me.â You raise an eyebrow.
He doesnât answer, packing up the notebooks speedily and standing up even before you could grab your keys and phone off the table.
The elevator ride up is silent and Yoongi has a pissed off expression on his face, lips pressed tightly, arms crossed, and blank gaze staring at the numbers that changed all too slowly. When he finally notices you staring, he shoots you a dull look accompanied with a scoff, but when he turns away, you donât fail to notice the way he has to bite down to stop the sides of his mouth from lifting at the corners.
His room is all too clean and perfectly organized already despite just having moved in as well. Itâs emptier than yours yet looks personalized at the same time with his notebooks and laptop on the desk, and bag in the corner.
As he busies himself with organizing the pile on his desk, you set your stuff down to notice the window and the faint glow of streetlights and brightly lit homes in the distance streaming in. It was a better view than your room for sure, which faced another ugly residence building so the most you could see was another first year working hard on a project or something.
âMan, do you ever just feel like a parent that just tucked their kids in bed?â You sit down on the edge of his bed and it sinks just a little, like plush or foam underneath you. âWhoaâŚâ
That catches Yoongiâs attention and he laughs, âWhat did I tell you? RA rooms get much nicer beds than the ones you first years have.â
âI didnât know youââ And then it all clicks in your head.
Last year, when he fell on your bed. His surprised expression at how soft the mattress was. Itâs not that he didnât live here, but that he was a RA the entire time and never experienced the hardships of first years.
âOh,â you mutter. âYeah, um, I had a memory foam mattress topper thing last year.â
âSheesh and you thought I, your RA, didnât live here.â
You ignore his comment, stretching yourself out. âThis is still so much comfier. Canât I just stay here?â
When you donât get an answer, you turn to see his calculating eyes watching you, with a frown on his lips. There was no overly sarcastic remark or another sassy response like youâd been expecting.
Instead, Yoongi picks up your keys from where you left them on the table. âHmm, then I guess you wonât need these anymore.â
âWhat?â
His frown deepens into something like that permanent scowl youâve seen too often, yet it still looks somewhat different. Softer at the edges. âYou canât forget your keys anymore.â
You snort. âWell, clearly. Thank you, Mr. Iâm-the-strictest-RA-who-will-catch-youâhey speaking of that, you never even charged me for that time last yearââ
ââbecause you already have them.â He sets your keychain back onto the desk and crosses the room in a few steps.
âWhat do you mean? I clearly didnât haveââ
He sinks onto the bed beside you. âRemember what those pockets on your shirt were for?â
âSo I can put my backup keysâŚoh.â
Theyâre to store all my keys⌠keys to your heart.
Time seems to slow when he gradually leans closer to you, the usual intense gaze still there but itâs muddled with something else. Those dark eyes watch yours, staring until thereâs just a mere centimetre between you, until youâre drowning in the sheets that linger of fresh laundry and a light shampoo.Â
âTheyâre all yours.â
Then eyes close and the world spins and time stops entirely as thoughts jumble and itâs simply ironic how itâs different yet again when everything feels all too familiar. Supple lips and the gentle brush of fingertips across skin, and hair even softer than before.
And you donât suppress the small flutters in your chest this time, not caging them in anymore, not when you have the keys now.
Then thereâs the sound of something hitting the doorânot quite a knock but more of a soft thud. It makes the two of you freeze, pausing to listen for any other signs of movement because as RAs, youâre technically supposed to open the doorâ
âOwâŚâ
âYah, Jungkook, you idiot, thereâs no way they didnât hear that!â
âThat kind of sounded like Taehyung.â Yoongi only chuckles softly by your ear, not making any movements to get up. âWait, he doesnât live here, right?â
You feel a grin creep up your face. âNo, he doesnât.â
âHey, letâs just charge them, shall we?â
