It just occurred to me that Metabee may not actually be qualified for the artificial kids competition anyway

all other sentient robots have been always there. they're lifeforms that turned out in their own ways.

transformers are super robot lifeforms. medabots are actually the ancients. braves are either energy based lifeforms, or man-developed machines based on super metals from foreign origin. robots from daigunder are man-made, but they're so modeled off people in one way or other that you don't ever end up asking. karakuri martial artists are just alternate humans of that universe.

but now metal sonic is an interesting case because he was just out of scope of my attention until i saw spaghetti code getting associated with him. makes me wonder about eggman's coding practices. eggman's coding malpractices probably can span over a year's worth of articles in:

to see how metal's the outlier among his other robots though, and then ending up not getting used, metal probably is not much more different from cubot prototypes, d-fekt, or friendbot; the only difference that he makes to make eggman actively keep him is probably something about having sonic as a friend under his control. since the real sonic isnt living with him anytime soon (probably never), and eggman wants to interact with sonic all the time, he might want metal to fill the sonic shaped void in his heart. but judging from how cubot and orbot hating the idea of roleplaying as sonic and amy, eggman clearly isn't using metal for thar purposes.

maybe metal was originally supposed to be a lifesized sonic action figure, but had to be modified to not buy sonic's suspicion, by making it clearly different from the real sonic. the idea of using metal to frame sonic is just an afterthought, to justify the use of metal sonic else than to put it on display and admire the sleek look of sonic's.
