analysing sophie’s love life + hopes for her future

so i had a thought - isn’t sophie’s love life a pretty accurate description of what many people go through in real life? like yeah, the dudes she dated sucked, but i feel like this part of her character made a lot of sense.

stefan emotionally neglected her as she was growing up (which wasn’t his fault considering he was r*ped by her mom and she reminds him of the latter), and this led to her seeking comfort in finding a storybook prince who would love her the way her father never did, fueled by her mother always telling her she was a princess, she was special, etc.

we see her seek love in other men repeatedly, even when they use her, even when she knows they’re not healthy for her, such as rafal, but she stays because to her, it’s much better than not being loved at all. now, her relationship with rafal made sense, as toxic as it was, given she was abandoned by everyone she loved and had no one to turn to.

but a lot of people don’t get why she had to chase after rhian. the thing is, after  being in an abusive relationship like the one she had with rafal, it’s easy to fall into similar relationships. rhian did seem nice at first but deep down, he was just like rafal, using her for his personal gain, and i feel like because of her being used to rafal, being with rhian felt completely normal, even when he seemed too good to be true.

seeing her admit being single still didn’t keep her happy felt realistic because it’s hard to let go of a mentality you had ever since you were young. she lost her mother, her father moved on with his new family, and her best friend is getting married to someone else and can’t prioritize her anymore, which is a far result from her original dreams of finding true love and living happily ever after. i feel like given the circumstances she grew up in, being single forever isn’t right for her, although her taking a break from dating after the last ever after was beneficial after what she endured with rafal, but she also has a toxic mindset of what love should be like, and holds her back from finding the right person.

now, enter hort: a boy who is completely devoted to her, selfless towards her, and has been chasing after her for the entire series while she chased boys who ultimately didn’t want her. something sophie said in one true king really stuck with me: that she could be with hort, but something about the idea of him felt too easy and love felt like someone you must win over. this is a huge sign of her bad mentality when it comes to love, because to her, it’s something that should never be easy, even when the easy option is right there. she’s not used to unconditional love, she’s used to scheming and plotting and even manipulating only to get hurt in the end.

i’m not saying hophie is a good ship, i really dislike it given hort’s... creepy tendencies and how sophie had treated him before one true king. but i feel like being with him for a while could help her realize what healthy love is and fix this part of her. even if she doesn’t stay with him forever, she could learn from this relationship what good and unconditional love should feel like and use that to improve herself and find a better ending with the right person. i’m not saying hophie as a ship is healthy, but being with someone who would treat her well could change her perspective towards love and heal from the emotional abuse and neglect she suffered from previous lovers.

and who knows? maybe after healing, she can end up with nicola one day :)
