I did what I had to
Javy “Coyote” Machado x Female!Reader/Original Female Character
In the few short months they had together, she had gotten to know him better than anyone. Even better than Hangman, even if Jake was loathe to admit it. He didn’t know what she had gone into their relationship expecting, but he knew he hadn’t expected what they had become. It had frightened him a little, and while not wanting a long-distance relationship hadn’t been a bullshit excuse, it had been a very convenient one.

This is the companion piece to Promise this ain't a test. You don't need to read that first, but if you want Her side of the story, go give that a read. Hope you enjoy xx.
WC: 1.2k
Warnings: none really, a little angst. third person because that’s my comfort style, no use of y/n.
He saw her the moment she walked into the bar and ran out the back. It was hard to miss her when his eyes were so used to finding her in the crowd at the Hard Deck. He occupied himself with trying to trip Hangman up as he threw darts, a hand thrown in front of his eyes as he threw the final dart and Coyote lost another twenty dollars to him. He was a pain in the ass, but he was the person he trusted most.
His eyes flicked to her every moment he knew that everyone else was preoccupied. It was hard not to go over there and order directly from her, announcing his presence. He didn’t think she had seen him, or maybe that was wishful thinking. Honestly, he just didn’t really know what to say to her, not after what he had done. Dodging all her phone calls after leaving a drunken message, it was foolish, he could recognize that now. But what was he supposed to say about that, “sorry I got drunk, decided I wished I hadn’t broken up with you but then couldn’t deal with that realization when I was sober.” It had been so long ago; he really didn’t think that was going to fly well. Not with her.
He tried to take his mind off her with the easy banter between Hangman and Phoenix, only made easier when Rooster had walked in and practically taken over the bar. It was eye-roll inducing, actually. Then Jake was next to him, giving him a look that said he had finally seen her as well, but he handed him a beer instead of speaking, and Coyote downed it quickly. The past was a confronting thing, especially since he had been the one who’d messed up.
But Coyote had laughed loudly as they hauled an older gentleman out of the bar when he wasn’t able to cover his tab, allowing Jake and Payback to pull him away from the bar, so he didn’t have to get too close to her. He caught sight of her smile though, and his breath caught in his throat just a moment, remembering when she used to direct that smile at him. Then the music stopped and Rooster was behind the piano and his eyes were glued on her as he watched her sway to the music, singing loudly as she grabbed drinks for customers and shoved their money in the tip jar. Hangman threw an elbow into his ribs when the music stopped and his eyes were still glued on her.
“Just go talk to her man, she knows you’re here,” he says, like it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. He hums in response, finally pulling his eyes from her and back to Hangman.
“Just rack up another game,” he says, trying to push a laugh past his lips like he isn’t bothered by this in the slightest. But it’s decidedly forced and Hangman knows it. There were only so many pointed looks he could throw at both of them though.
When he looked back, after having lost again, he frowned, seeing that she wasn’t behind the bar anymore. His eyes scanned the bar looking for her, trying to see if she was simply doing the rounds. He couldn’t stop the feeling of disappointment that swelled in his chest when he realized he couldn’t find her. Maybe he should have gone over and said hi, rather than standing there, feeling like a fool for not doing it.
But then Phoenix is dragging her over, and Coyote can’t move. He stands there like a statue while she’s passed around the group for hugs and hellos. Everyone who’s been through Top Gun in the last few years knows her well. She’s been at the Hard Deck longer than Penny’s owned it. She had admitted to him once that she wished she had the money to buy it herself, but she’d settle for being a favorite in a job where everyone loved her. He’d kissed her that night and told her he loved her the most. It had been the only time he’d said those words, and it probably would have been better in any other context, but it surprised him that he meant it.
Then she’s thrust into his side, and his arm wraps around her for just a moment to steady her. She’s smiling up at him, and he can’t bring himself to mirror her bright grin.
“Hey you,” he utters, and watches her grin fade. Maybe that hadn’t been the right thing to say.
“You good?” she returns, and he bites back the remark on the tip of his tongue. Instead, he wraps his hand around her wrist, the same hand that had held her steady just a moment ago.
He pulls her with him, away from the prying eyes of pilots who don’t know you well enough to explain this situation. He feels Hangman watching him carefully, and if he could give him a look to tell him everything is fine, he would. But looking back means seeing everyone else’s faces and he doesn’t want to deal with that right now. He knows that Phoenix’s would show concern, more for her friend than for him, maybe there would be a glint of anger like she’d want to say something, and that’s not what he wants.
“It’s been years and your first words are you good?” He spits, and there definitely needed to be less venom in that sentence, but it’s too late to turn back to her and apologize as she’s speaking.
“Your first words were hey you!” she points out, and yeah, she’s not wrong. He sighs, wanting to find the words to make this right, but she continues. “You looked happy; I didn’t know if me coming over would spoil that. I didn’t want to spoil that.” She sounds resigned, and he breaks his strong façade a little.
“You wouldn’t have spoiled it,” he breaths, looking up at her, and giving her a soft little smile. He’s not lying, because it’s good to just see her.
“I’m not mad about anything, it’s been years Javy, I’m not that much into holding a grudge.”
“So, we’re okay?” He checks, because he’s a little relieved that she’s not holding onto him being an ass. He was an ass and would have deserved that. He doesn’t want to say they’ll be friends, but he doesn’t want there to be animosity between them.
“I don’t know, are you okay?”
“I’m okay.”
“Great, we’re both okay!” She laughs, and Coyote chuckles along with her. He didn’t expect this conversation to go this way, but he’s glad that it does. So, he holds his arms open to her, a gesture of good faith, a way of apologizing for everything. When she steps into him easily, it just feels right to wrap his arms around her and hold her close.

SORRY FOR THE ESSAY BUT:
I found your blog when I was in the dumps about my life and what to read in general. fics have really gotten me back into reading and has been my greatest escape and hobby since I’ve made an account on here. Except there was a point where I was really disinterested in top gun and I was just reading for the sake of being there for my favourite writers. I actually grew really irritated with rooster and hangman at one point, like of course shout out to everyone and their wonderful work but I nearly lost my mind if I was to see jake or brad gifs again. The problem was that I was not really interested in other fandoms and I hated feeling like I was letting something really wonderful grow stale. Except one day I found your Mickey fics. Holy grail I say. Completely changed the way I looked at the fandom and writing and even language (girl I re-downloaded Duolingo okay.). I’m not bored with the fandom anymore, I’ve actually grown to adore it even more (and I like rooster and Jake again yay :)). I’ve even ventured into other fandoms to mix it up. Point is — I love reading. it’s really saved me and my mental health. Bouncing between books and this site has made me sooo much happier. You have a phenomenal gift in writing and it’s been such a pleasure to read. Thank you xx
Oh my darling -- I know it's taken me some time to respond to this. Would you believe I got this ask when I was coming off of a VERY stressful day and feeling like I just wasn't putting in the energy where it needed to go, and feeling like I was coming up short with just EVERYTHING (the holidays are so stressful, and work on top of that can make you feel stretched SO thin) -- In any case, then I get this...
I've read it an innumerable amount of times.
Thank you, thank you SO much for taking the time to send this. For telling me that you've enjoyed my Mickey fic. That reading has helped to re-spark your love and interest in the fandom. I completely understand where you're coming from -- I have definitely overindulged in fics for particular characters (and there are SUCH incredible fics out there for Rooster and Jake, and the others -- we truly exist in a fandom that's rich with talent), but then when you find something new it's like "WHOA!"
I'm definitely the type of person to fixate on a more minor character, and, with Mickey, well, it was a no-brainer. I LOVE Danny Ramirez. He was SO good in "On My Block," and every time I see him I think he absolutely indulges and delivers on every role he's in. I so wished for more of him, and I just sort of... ran with it. I'm just honored to contribute to the fandom in any way I can ...
I've definitely enjoyed expanding into reading for all of the characters, and even writing for more. I've found this fandom and these characters to be SO fun.
Thank you for saying that my writing is a pleasure to read, because it's a pleasure to write. And I want that to come through. I love playing with language, I love writing for characters that allow me to flex my bilingual muscles. I love writing casual intimacy.
I'm planning to continue writing for Mickey (and his girl), Javy, and even Rooster. So I hope you stick around. And you're always welcome to request some things when I post prompt lists. I can't promise I'll get to them quickly, but it's a delight to write things for others. (No pressure to engage, of course -- this ask truly was such a gift.) I'm sending you ALL of my love and my hugs.
Thank you for supporting me and being so kind.
