Surprising Him [Minseok, Junmyeon, and Yixing]

Minseok

Catherine was a newbie to the world of celebrities. She was a photographer who scored big after winning a contest in Seoul. It got her name out there as she took her home base from her hometown of LA to Gangnam, South Korea. With her previous work, she connected with big names in the kpop industry like EXO and B.A.P as well as Jay Park when they hired her back in LA. Out of the people she connected with, EXO was one group that pursued a friendship with her. Even countries away from each other, they kept in close contact.

Minseok, in particular, kept the most consistent contact with her. When she made the move to Gangnam, he was the first one to show her around and help her get settled. Their relationship quickly advanced through the months from a typical friendship to officially, yet under the radar, dating.

Catherine was focused on editing a photo when her work phone went off. She picked up the landline, not taking her eyes off the screen, “Click a World Photography, this is Catherine speaking.” She listened to the person on the other end and stopped working on her computer. “You said May 5th?” She looked at her wall calendar. “It’s a tight squeeze, would 2:30 work for you?… Okay, and who is the group I’ll be working with?” She couldn’t help the smile that graced her lips, “Sure, I look forward to working with you.” She hung up and pulled out her cell phone to text her boyfriend the news, but she paused. It would be a nice surprise to him if she just showed up as their main photographer. She pocketed her phone and went back to work, but her mind continued to stray with the thought of working with EXO again.

The day arrived and Catherine arrived early with her assistant to help her set up. One of EXO’s managers approached her and they greeted each others before Catherine went through a tentative schedule she created for the day. Afterwards, she waited for the boys to finish getting dressed for the first group of photos.

The guys knew about Minseok and Catherine, so when they saw her discussing angles and the lighting they were excited.

Minseok was the last to get out of the dressing room and he made his way over to the others who gather around Catherine’s short stature. He joined the group and his jaw dropped when he made eye contact with his girlfriend. She gave him a little smile as she went through the procedure of the day.

“Okay” she shut her sketchbook, “If there’s not questions, Minseok, Junmyeon, Jongdae, and Baekhyun follow me.” She grinned as she turned on her heels and headed to the set up.

Minseok watched her walk away. He swiped his tongue over his upper teeth as he still tried to get over the thought that his girlfriend was working with him.

Junmyeong

“I’m sorry.”

Bethany leaned up against her counter as she listened to Junmyeon’s apology over the phone. It was Friday Night Movie Night, something Bethany and Junmyeon tried to have weekly. She twirled her wet hair with her index finger and sighed, “Hey, I don’t know why you’re apologizing. You can’t fight work.”

“I know that, but still. This is my third time cancelling our best friend night…”

Bethany let out a chuckled, “Don’t sweat it. Just make sure you make a bomb ass comeback to make it up to me.”

“AHHH!” Bethany jumped at the sudden loud whine in the background. “I’M SO HUNGRY!”

She laughed, “Was that Baekhyun?” Junmyeon let out an annoyed mhm as a reply. “Have you not eaten?”

“We ate at 3…”

Bethany looked at the clock on her oven. “I see…” She opened her cabinet and sought out her take out menus.

“I gotta go. We’re still at the studio working on this choreography.”

Bethany said her goodbyes and hung up the call. She dialed her favorite chicken place and placed her order to pick up.

After picking up the twelve boxes of chicken in five large bags, Bethany drove out to the studio where she knew the boys would still be. She made her way inside and made a beeline to the only lit up studio. She knocked with two of the bags of chicken, but got no response. She twisted the knob and was greeted with loud music. The song neared the end when she announced herself, “knock knock” the eight of them looked back at her. “I come bearing gifts!”

Baekhyun’s eyes lit up as he drooled on sight, “FOOD!” He ran towards her and hungrily took a bag.

Junmyeon tried to catch his breath as he approached her to take the bags off her hands, “You’re amazing.”

Bethany flipped her imaginary hair, “I know that. Why don’t we sit outside? It feels too stuffy and I could not possibly eat in a room that smells like sweat.” Junmyeon laughed as he guide her and the others outside to a sitting area.

Once outside, Bethany gave a box of chicken to each member before she plopped down across from Junmyeon and took her own box. She watched as the boys devour their first piece and she couldn’t help the smile that graced her lips. She grabbed her first piece as she looked at Junmyeon who was watching his members as he chewed on a bite of his chicken. His eyes met hers as he chewed. With his knuckle, he rubbed his nose, their secret sign for thank you. Bethany winked in return before she took a crunchy bite into her chicken leg.

Yixing

“No, it’s fine… I love you more” Brittney hung up her phone and tossed it on her bed. She let out a sigh as she lay down across her bed with a heavy heart. Her forced smile fell as she covered her eyes to stop tears from slipping. Her phone alerted her of a text she was sure was from her boyfriend, Yixing, who she just got off the phone with. She knew he didn’t buy her peppy upbeat voice for a minute. Which was only natural when considering the bad news he had given her. Due to her work in Seoul, it was hard for her to ever leave to go see her boyfriend in China. Same went for him as well due to his own work. It had been six months since they saw each others and with their four year anniversary nearing, Yixing planned to take off and go to Seoul. However, that plan was shot as he joined a dancing competition as a judge.

Brittany’s phone rang beside her and mindlessly, she prodded for it. She plucked it from her comforter and slid the button to answer it, “Yes?”

“So, you really are upset” her best friend, Baekhyun, stated.

Brittany’s eyes blurred with tears, “It’s stupid…” She sniffled.

“Missing your boyfriend is not stupid, but not going to China is” he replied.

She swallowed, “Yea, like boss would let me take off in the middle of Red Velvet’s promotion.”

Baekhyun chuckled, “And that’s where you are oh so wrong. Yeri and I talked to him and you got two weeks off. You should buy that plane ticket.”

Brittany sat up in bed as she let out a half laugh half cry, “Gawd, what’d I do without you guys.”

One of the hardest parts of being in China was the language barrier. Yixing had taught her basic and casual conversations, but the idea of trying to put them to use was embarrassingly hard. She didn’t even know how she was able to get to her boyfriend’s apartment. Yet there she was. She pulled out her keys and fished for his door key before she pulled her suitcase and herself inside.

She set her suitcase in his bedroom before she returned downstairs and looked in his kitchen. Brittany planned to surprise him with a large dinner and she sent him a text asking when he’d be home so she could “call him”.

That night, she finished up the last of the dinner prep just as her phone went off. She set down the plates and looked to see Yixing’s name. “Hey babe.”

“Hey Bǎobèi. What are you doing?” He asked.

She could hear the exhaustion in his voice, “I just finished cooking supper actually.”

“Mmm… That sounds good. I miss your cooking. I’m stuck going home and eating noodles.”

She heard the door knob from the kitchen and she headed to the living room, “You should eat more than just noodles, babe.”

His voice echoed in the room and the phone as he entered his apartment, “I usually do, but tonight I’m too tired to cook.”

“Well good thing you don’t have to, huh?”

Yixing’s head shot up hearing her voice clear in the room. He looked at her and his hand with his phone fell to his side. She hung up the phone as she smiled widely before him. He let out a laugh, “You’re really here!” He was so shocked.  Brittany approached him and threw her arms around his neck. His laugh died down as he took in her shampoo and he hugged her tightly. “I missed you so much” he whispered in the crook of her neck.

“I missed you” she replied. “But” she pulled away from him, “You have me for two weeks, so we have a lot of time to catch up.” She leaned up and gave him a quick kiss, “I wasn’t lying when I said I made dinner. So come on, let’s go eat.”

She pulled him through his apartment to the kitchen where he was greeted by her homemade food. He couldn’t wait to dive in and eat her homecooking again. It was something he had been craving for months.
