I liked sparklecare until the author did this odd thing where villainous or morally questionable characters are always strictly cishet and even said it was their hard-line rule? Like LGBT characters can never be antagonists or abusive which just felt weird to me, maybe they relaxed on that though I dunno? I am def never offended if a villain shares my gender in a series where good guys can be like me anyway I mean

TLDR: Yeah, there's some weird gender bias with the characters sometimes. Anyways, *starts talking about Awful Hospital again*

Also, spoilers for both Sparklecare Hospital and Awful Hospital. (up to page 41 of SH and various plot point/character reveals for Awful Hospital)

I haven't read too far into the comic myself to confirm, and the genders of the characters were kind of vague anyways thanks to Nurse Mood's shitty notetaking (EDIT: I learned about the existence of the 'Cast' page, my bad), but yeah I've definitely seen a pattern where the LGBT characters are all 'good', regardless of whether they're a patient or employed by the hospital.

For example, Mood and Ms. Dies are in a lesbian relationship. They're also both employed by the hospital, and despite this are portrayed sympathetically, in opposition to Dr. Cuddles' being genuinely malicious and cruel, as seen below:

...Even though it's also shown that Mood doesn't give half a shit about the patients, either.

Now, if you want some equal, well-handled representation, look no further than seriously one of the worst best webcomics of all time...

Awful Hospital, despite the majority of its cast not even being remotely human, has some great LGBTQ representation in both it's heroes and its villains! Well, 'villains'. The only real villain is the Big Bad(s) of the series, everyone else is just doing what they gotta do in order to survive.

Speaking of which, this is E.M. Balmer. He's a villain of a whole arc, and has a sort of "kid's cartoon villain" vibe. Goofy, incredibly self-absorbed, and affably evil. He's also implied to have some sort of interest in another male character, Dr. Phage.

Also, just tell me this beefcake isn't some sort of a Gay. Just look at him.

...AAAANYWAYS, in terms of heroic queer characters, you've got your choice between the Lesbians and the Trans.

Celia and Staph are this really sweet fungal/bacterial couple who have like a trillion kids and are also besties with the person who's corpse they live in.

Miss is cleverly implied to be trans with this line here:

Which, personally, I think is really cool!!!!

While we’re on the topic (maybe we moved on idk) let me just say the fandom is AWFUL, on Twitter AND tumblr. But especially tumblr. Any slightly morally grey character is now evil, the fandom is, hilariously enough, weirdly ableist and queerphobic, 90% of the people in this god forsaken fandom hate contradictory labels, and it feels like they hate any disabled person that isn’t “palatable” (had to witness this first hand!!!! And by witness I mean it happened to me!!!!!!!! I GOT FUCKING STALKED OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Everyone is so fucking drama obsessed dude, especially the adults weirdly enough. The fandom is horrible. Going on anon since I don’t wanna be tracked down and killed but you probably know who I am 👍

I am NOT a Sparklecare fan. I am an AWFUL HOSPITAL FAN who is GIVING SPARKLECARE A CHANCE.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Awful Hospital fandom, other than maybe a few creeps at the edges of the fanbase. So let's talk about it instead. Unfortunately, I'll be looking at it through incredibly cynical eyes, and am expecting to be disappointed, no offense.

(And yes I'm aware that nobody's gonna read this or care what I think but dammit I'm egotistical and neruotic and I'm gonna fucking do this because I WANNA)

Thoughts on Sparkle Care

Why did you get rid of the interesting part What was wrong with it being an interpretation of Purgatory That's ten times more interesting for it being some Big Pharma Chop Shop that "NOBODY EVER LEAVES!!!!!!!!"

Either way, Awful Hospital is still better than both versions, because in AH the doctors are actually good and trying to do what's right, they've just been fucked up because of the Bad Things™ affecting the Hospital and that's screwed with their judgement.

Shit dealing with alternate universes/dimensions/realties/timelines is usually ten times better than something that doesn't.

Also I'm gonna add that if people have begun noticing that "anyone who goes in never comes out" then there's gonna be some major fucking backlash, unless whatever Rainbow Furryland this place takes in is a tyrannical dictatorship where anyone who says a bad word is taken to an undisclosed location and shot. Major unbelievability. If it's gonna happen it's gotta make sense IN-WORLD.

It has come to my attention that Sparkle Care is supposedly just a lot of metaphors about the real life medical system and should not be taken at face value.

Unfortunately I am autistic and like things that are literal and should be taken at face value, which is why I like Awful Hospital more. It's just literally a comic about a hospital ran by a giant bacteriophage with glasses and a bowtie. :)
