Posted @withrepost • @the_neurodivergent_teacher There are many things that contribute to our students' identities. Their unexpected or challenging behaviors are NOT one of them. Your student is not a runner, a biter, a scratcher. Your student may engage in these behaviors, but it . is . not . who . they . are. . Let's all stop identifying our students by their fight-or-flight responses during moments of stress and crisis. They deserve better. . . . #autism #AutismTeacher #AutismClassroom #speducator #AutismAcceptance #SpecialEducation #SpecialEd #SpecialEdTeacher #SpecialEducationTeacher #neurodiversity #BehaviorIsCommunication #SpecialEducationClassroom #TeachersFollowTeachers #TeachersOfInstagram #WordsMatter https://www.instagram.com/p/B03aWkmjCx_cA8jZsHkSFQfeXhirVIpx_nCuKY0/?igshid=1c5kykoymgoh

Posted @withrepost • @the_neurodivergent_teacher It's long past time professionals stop the use of functioning labels to define the population we work with. Referring to your students as "high-functioning" and "low-functioning" is harmful. Period. Full stop. Cease and desist. . . . Labeling a student "low-functioning" is to label a student as the sum of their deficits and ignore their skills and strengths. Saying a student is "high-functioning" dismisses their challenges and support needs. And neither label gives you any meaningful information about a student, their needs, or their strengths. So let's all agree to stop using labels that do nothing but hurt our students and promote ableism, shall we? . . . #autism #AutismAcceptance #AutismTeacher #AutismClassroom #AutisticsSpeak #CelebrateNeurodiversity #SpecialEducation #SpecialEd #SpecialEdTeacher #SpecialEducationTeacher #SpecialEducationClassroom #SpecialEdClassroom #speducator #Teachers #TeacherOfInstagram #TeachersOfIg #TeachersForSocialJustice #TeachersForEquality #TeachersFollowTeachers #EndAbleism #ableism #DisabilityRights #DisabilityPride https://www.instagram.com/p/B03aMd9jymQwZdc7hnyIjVtFydU6PMMe-zX1dE0/?igshid=zx8o0346885n
