Kyle Broflovski and Judaism

Long essay-type thing on the South Park character Kyle Broflovski and Judaism under the cut.

I’ve been watching a lot of South Park lately, and I really love it.  It’s supremely problematic in almost every way, but it’s often exceptionally smart and has a beautiful emotional core.  My favorite character is Kyle, one of the four protagonists and the only Jewish kid in the town of South Park.  There are lots of reasons I love Kyle- for example, he’s prone to obsession, he’s often a bit out of touch, and he usually can’t resist standing up for himself- and one of the things I like best about him is the way his attitude towards Judaism has developed over time.

When a TV show has a Jewish character, that character’s Judaism is often reduced to the occasional one-liner or to a casual remark during a Christmas episode.  They’re there to illustrate that not everyone celebrates Christmas, and so the show can have a token character that it can point to as being religiously diverse while almost never actually expressing that diversity.  These Jewish characters are assimilated to the point where their Jewishness never needs to come up beyond those rare comments.  Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this type of character, since there are plenty of Jews like that in real life- but when every Jewish character on TV is like that, it hardly feels like representation (though sadly it’s generally still better than what any of the other non-Christian religions get).

South Park is different.  Neither the audience nor Kyle himself ever has the opportunity to forget or ignore that he’s Jewish.  He’s continually confronted with everything from total ignorance (“I think it's against the law [for Jews to eat Christmas snow], dude.”) to horrible stereotyping by authority figures (“Jews can’t play basketball.”) and, of course, to the constant stream of abuse by Eric Cartman.  Kyle is “the Jew” in his peer group and faces all of the pressure and discrimination that comes from it.

That alone would be enough to set him apart from most Jewish characters on television, but there’s more.  The way Kyle actively struggles with and relates to his Jewish identity and beliefs is an integral part of his character.  Over the course of the show, Kyle has learned and grown in respect to his people.  He went from complete ignorance about being Jewish to being thoughtful and informed.

In the first two seasons, it is very clear that Kyle knows next to nothing about Judaism.  To be fair, he’s only eight years old, but there are things that it’s worrying for even a kid his age not to know.  He doesn’t know what a bris is, he doesn’t know why we light candles on Chanukah, and he has no understanding of the Holocaust (as revealed in the episodes “Ike’s Wee Wee,” “Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo,” and “Chickenpox,” respectively).  When Cartman rips on him, or when his mother advocates on behalf of his religion, Kyle gets defensive and insecure.  This is perfectly set up in the first season episode “Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo”: 

Kyle’s Mom: How dare you include the nativity in a school play?! Don't you realize my son is Jewish?

[Kyle glances around at his classmates.]

Mr. Garrison: So?

Kyle’s mom: So what makes you think he should play Joseph of Arimathea?

Mr. Garrison: Because it's Christmas.

Kyle’s mom: Our family doesn't celebrate Christmas.

[The kids gasp.  Kyle lowers his head.]

Mr. Garrison: Oh, God, you're not gonna lay that Chanukah crap on me, are you?

Kyle’s mom: Whatwhatwhat?! You're not going to get away with this, Mr. Garrison!

Cartman: Oh, good.  Kyle's mom is here to ruin Christmas!

Kyle [to Cartman]:  Shut up, fat boy!

Cartman: I'm not fat, I'm festively plump.

Stan: Why are you Jewish on Christmas, Kyle?

A big part of Kyle’s problem is that he can’t answer Stan’s question.  He has no idea why he’s Jewish or what being Jewish even means.  When, later in the episode, the other boys tell Kyle that “Jewish people can't eat Christmas snow,” Kyle’s initial response is an automatic “We can too!”  However, since Kyle doesn’t actually understand what he’s talking about, he can’t follow it up with any logic, and is subsequently convinced that it is actually illegal for Jews to eat “Christmas snow”.  Kyle sums up his feelings on the subject when he tells the school guidance counselor, “[I’m Jewish] but I don’t mean to be!”  He’s embarrassed, he’s confused, and he’s uncomfortable with his identity.

Of course, this isn’t entirely unexpected from a boy who seems to be practically the only Jewish kid (apart from his baby brother) in a Roman Catholic town, and whose parents aren’t generally any good at communicating with kids.  When Kyle has doubts or questions about Judaism, after his parents inevitably fail to reassure him, his next step is generally to consult not his own synagogue’s rabbi but his friends’ priest, Father Maxi.  Maxi is vocal about the fact that all Jews are going to hell and at one point co-opts Kyle into helping perform the Stations of the Cross, asking, “You’re not too Jewish to worship Jesus, are you?”  (to which Kyle confusedly responds, “I guess not.”).  South Park isn’t a great place for a Jewish upbringing, even apart from the rampant anti-Semitism.

But after establishing his ignorance in seasons one and two, the show starts to have Kyle slowly begin to learn in season three.  The season kicks off with the episode “Rainforest Schmainforest,” in which Kyle deals with some Jewish stereotypes.  In “Jewbilee” (season 3, episode 9) we see Kyle involved in a Jewish youth group, and hear his mother tell the story of Abraham.  In “Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics” (season 3, episode 15) we see Kyle teaching his younger brother, Ike, about how to celebrate Chanukah.  Kyle’s confusion and defensiveness start to disappear as he learns.  In the season 5 episode “The Entity” Kyle demonstrates that he now has at least a basic understanding of the Holocaust and a more complex understanding of Jewish stereotypes. 

During this time, though, as Kyle becomes more confident about Judaism and Jewish religious beliefs, he also experiences doubt.  In the season four two-parter “Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?” and “Probably,” Kyle decides to become Catholic like his friends since “if they're wrong, no big deal. If we're wrong, we burn in hell.”  In season five’s “Cartmanland,” Kyle loses faith in God altogether for a time.  This is important not just because he comes out of it with his faith restored, but because it shows that he now has faith to lose.  For Kyle, Judaism is no longer something he “doesn’t mean to be” or something he’s embarrassed of- it’s something he personally feels connected to and believes in.  And so Kyle emerges from all of this learning and questioning more confident than ever.  Kyle completely stops responding to anti-Semitic remarks with doubts or hesitation, instead responding confidently with anger and/or more informed arguments.  Season six’s “Ladder to Heaven” episode has a perfect example of that kind of response:

Cartman: All right, look. I didn't want to have to say this, but I think maybe we're not seeing heaven because one of us doesn't believe in it enough.

 Kyle: Huh?

Cartman: Heaven could be like the pixie fairies of Bubble Yum Forest. You only see them if you really believe in them.

Stan: What?

Cartman: You know- maybe we're not seeing heaven because one of us is a J-O-O.

Kyle: What does me being a Jew have to do with anything?!

Cartman: Because Jews don't believe in heaven!

Kyle: Yes we do! Just not in the Christian heaven!

Cartman: Right. Your idea of heaven is getting five dollars off your matzoh ball soup at Barney's Beanery by lying about a hair in it.

Kyle: AAHHHH!!!

Over the next few seasons, Kyle continues to stand up for himself and his people.  By the time of his next big Judaism-related dilemma, in “The Passion of the Jew” (season eight, episode four), Kyle’s response has changed markedly from what it was in “Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?”  When Cartman starts using the film “The Passion of the Christ” as justification for his anti-Semitic behavior, for a long time Kyle takes it in stride, responding with the anger that by then had become automatic: “Shut up about Jews, fatass! You don't know anything!”  Eventually, Kyle watches the movie himself, and is convinced by it that Cartman was right.  As usual, he goes to see Father Maxi, but rather that try to convert away from Judaism as he did in season four,  Kyle focuses on what he, as a Jew, can do to make up for it.  He even speaks before his synagogue’s congregation in a misguided attempt to rally them, saying that “If we as a people choose not to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then we can still apologize for the brutal way in which he was killed, and take our share of the responsibility for it.”  Ultimately, Kyle realizes that taking the movie seriously was a mistake and he emerges from the incident with even more confidence that before.

Again, the show gives us ample opportunity to see this confidence in action.  We see Kyle casually talk about eating a kosher lunch and not caring about Easter.  In the season eight episode “Woodland Critter Christmas,” we see Kyle act in stark contrast to his behavior back in “Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo.”  In that episode, Kyle was embarrassed because his mom pointed out that he’s Jewish.  But in “Woodland Critter Christmas,” Kyle adamantly stands up for himself:

Kyle: Oh, stop it, Cartman! Just stop it! That's enough! You aren't reading another sentence of your stupid story!

Cartman: I don't believe anyone interrupted you when you read your Christmas story aloud, Kyle.

Kyle: This whole time, your stupid story was just a way to rip on me for being Jewish at Christmas again!

Cartman: Mr. Garrison, could you do something, please?

Mr. Garrison: Sorry, Eric, but if Kyle feels discriminated against, you'll have to stop or else I'll get a call from his mother.

  Throughout the rest of the show, we see this sort of response again and again:

  Cartman: This is ridiculous. Jews can't play basketball.

Kyle: I beat out your fat ass, Cartman!

    Cartman: We just can't get rid of you, can we, you sneaky Jew rat!

Kyle: Don't belittle my people, you fucking fatass!

Kyle: My fault?

Cartman: The Jews took all the money away, and they ha-

Kyle [jumps up and faces Cartman]: Don't even start! Don't even start, Cartman!

Butters: Well, why are we wearing bedsheets and playing with squirrels, Kyle?

Kyle: Not because of the Jews, Butters!  Who told you that?

  Kyle: All right, all right! Knock it off! Stop spreading lies.

Cartman: I'm trying to protect people. And why are you so quick to try and cover up Jewpacabra's existence?

Kyle: I looked on the known species webpage. There's no animal called a 'Jewpacabra' mentioned anywhere.

Cartman: Well, neither is Bigfoot, Kyle, but there are a lot of people who say they have spotted a Sasquatch.

Kyle: If someone says they saw a Sasquatch, they are either lying or they are stupid. Now stop lying about a Jewpacabra before stupid people start believing you!

  In the recent episode “Insecurity,” Kyle is not only able to rebuff Cartman’s usual anti-Semitic comments (“…I’m protected from all you greedy little Jews until you and your people die out!””) with an actual fact (“The Jewish population isn’t dying out, fatass. It’s growing.”), but he also holds up his own Jewish principles as the basis for trying to do the right thing.  When he tells his parents, “you’ve always taught me that being direct and honest is a basic Jewish tenet” it really shows how far he’s come.

It just feels really awesome to see a character arc like that.
