SQL Server 2022 licensing models 

SQL Server 2022 offers customers a variety of licensing options aligned with how customers typically purchase specific workloads. There are two main licensing models that apply to SQL Server:  PER CORE: Gives customers a more precise measure of computing power and a more consistent licensing metric, regardless of whether solutions are deployed on physical servers on-premises, or in virtual or cloud environments. 

• Core based licensing is appropriate when customers are unable to count users/devices, have Internet/Extranet workloads or systems that integrate with external facing workloads.

• Under the Per Core model, customers license either by physical server (based on the full physical core count) or by virtual machine (based on virtual cores allocated), as further explained below.

SERVER + CAL: Provides the option to license users and/or devices, with low-cost access to incremental SQL Server deployments.   

• Each server running SQL Server software requires a server license.

• Each user and/or device accessing a licensed SQL Server requires a SQL Server CAL that is the same version or newer – for example, to access a SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition server, a user would need a SQL Server 2019 or 2022 CAL.

Each SQL Server CAL allows access to multiple licensed SQL Servers, including Standard Edition and legacy Business Intelligence and Enterprise Edition Servers.SQL Server 2022 Editions availability by licensing model:  

Physical core licensing – Enterprise Edition 

• Customers can deploy an unlimited number of VMs or containers on the server and utilize the full capacity of the licensed hardware, by fully licensing the server (or server farm) with Enterprise Edition core subscription licenses or licenses with SA coverage based on the total number of physical cores on the servers.

• Subscription licenses or SA provide(s) the option to run an unlimited number of virtual machines or containers to handle dynamic workloads and fully utilize the hardware’s computing power.

Virtual core licensing – Standard/Enterprise Edition 

When licensing by virtual core on a virtual OSE with subscription licenses or SA coverage on all virtual cores (including hyperthreaded cores) on the virtual OSE, customers may run any number of containers in that virtual OSE. This benefit applies both to Standard and Enterprise Edition.

Licensing for non-production use 

SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition provides a fully featured version of SQL Server software—including all the features and capabilities of Enterprise Edition—licensed for  development, test and demonstration purposes only.  Customers may install and run the SQL Server Developer Edition software on any number of devices. This is  significant because it allows customers to run the software  on multiple devices (for testing purposes, for example)  without having to license each non-production server  system for SQL Server.

Brief introduction of OceanBase Database

OceanBase database is an enterprise-level distributed relational database developed by Ant Group, which was founded in 2010. It has the characteristics of strong consistency of data, high availability, high performance, online expansion, high compatibility with SQL standards, mainstream relational database, low cost and so on. So far, it has been successfully applied to all core businesses of Alipay and Alibaba. Since 2017, it has served customers in a wide range of industries, including Bank of Nanjing, Bank of Xi'an, Bank of Tianjin, Bank of Suzhou, Bank of Dongguan, Changshu Agricultural Bank, Guangdong Agricultural Credit, PICC and other nearly 40 banks, insurance and securities institutions, as well as India's largest payment company Paytm.

OceanBase consists of the following parts:

Client: users use OccanBase in exactly the same way as MySQL databases, supporting JDBC, C client access, and so on. Applications and tools developed based on MySQL database can be migrated directly to alibaba oceanbase.

RootServer: manages all servers in the cluster, tablet data distribution, and replica management. RootServer generally consists of one master and one slave, and the data between the master and slave is strongly synchronized.

UpdateServer: stores incremental update data for the alibaba oceanbase system. Generally speaking, UpdateServer consists of one master and one slave, and different synchronization modes can be configured between master and slave. When deployed, the UpdateServer process and the RootServer process often share a physical server.

ChunkServer: stores the baseline data of the OccanBase system. Baseline data is generally stored in two or three copies and can be configured.

MergeServer: receives and parses the user's sQL request, and forwards it to the corresponding ChunkServer or UpdateServer after a series of operations such as lexical analysis, syntax analysis, query optimization, etc. If the requested data is distributed across multiple ChunkServer, the MergeServer also needs to merge the results returned by multiple ChunkServer. The native MySQL communication protocol is adopted between the client and MergeScrver, and the MySQL client can access MergeServer directly.

OceanBase supports the deployment of multiple data centers, each with a complete OceanBase cluster including RootServer, MergeServer, ChunkServer and UpdateServer. Each cluster has its own RootServer responsible for data partition, load balancing, cluster server management and other operations. Data synchronization between clusters is realized by synchronizing the operation log incrementally from the master UpdateServer of the master cluster to the slave cluster. The client is configured with multiple cluster RootServer address lists. Users can set the traffic allocation ratio for each cluster, and the client sends read and write operations to different clusters according to this ratio.

OceanBase clients communicate with MergeServer. Currently, the following clients are mainly supported:

Mysql client: MergeServer is compatible with Mysql protocol. Mysql client and related tools (such as Java database access method JDBC) can be used directly by setting the address of the server to the address of any MergeServer.

Java client: multiple MergeServer,Java clients are deployed inside OceanBase to provide encapsulation of Mysql standard JDBC Driver, and provide traffic distribution, load balancing, MergeServer exception handling and other functions. To put it simply, the Java client first locates to a certain MergeServer according to a certain policy, and then calls Mysql JDBC Driver to send read and write requests to this MergeServer.
