It says, “Effective 8/24/2022, Starlink is reducing your monthly service fee to €105.” Well, ok. The price cut is welcome at a time when everything else is getting more expensive due to inflation. “The price reduction factors in your local market conditions and is meant to reflect parity in purchasing power across our customers,” reads the announcement. The situation in the US is less clear Others are reporting similar discounts in locations around the world. For example, on Reddit a person in the UK reports a reduction in their monthly fee to £75 (down from £89), Mexico to $1,100 MXN (down from $2,299 MXN), and Germany €80 (down from €100). Users in Chile and Brazil are reporting price cuts of around 50 percent. A spot check on Starlink’s respective service pages in each country supports the above claims. The situation in the US, where the dollar has been surging against foreign currencies, is less clear. A person in Nevada reports getting a reduction to $85 (was $110) but Starlink’s own pages still show a monthly subscription price of $110 after a one-time $599 purchase of the hardware kit. A few other people claiming to be from the US note that they haven’t received any price reduction. So far there’s no mention of a reduction in speed or the addition of strict data caps following the discounted subscriptions. Starlink offers two types of satellite Internet in Canada for non-business users: Residential Internet and RV Internet. Residential Internet is suitable for those with an address or who don’t need to change their location. RV Internet is for those who want mobility. You can take RV Internet anywhere you go, without location boundaries.

In Canada, the cost of Starlink is as below (as of this writing):

Starlink Residential satellite Internet: $140 per month + Service taxes $18.20 (Upfront Hardware cost is $759 and $65 for shipping plus $107.12 tax)

Starlink RV satellite Internet: $170 per month + Service taxes $22.10 (Upfront Hardware cost is $759 and $65 for shipping plus $107.12 tax)

Both plans are for no-contract, unlimited Internet with a speed of 50 to 150 Mbps. Reported Starlink speeds vary, but in general they are below 100 Mpbs download and 30 Mbps upload, but your own results may vary.

Speeds and downtime provided by Starlink are a lot better than other satellite providers and there also is no contract. Some rural areas have had no Internet access in Canada before, so something definitely is better than nothing. As Starlink is working to increase its coverage across the globe, in the future I hope more remote locations will have access to better satellite Internet.

Starlink is currently serving mainly North America and have about 500,000 customers.

Nearly 80% of users to date are located in North America, with another 18% in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Just 2% of Starlink users live in the rest of the world.

Starlink is permitted to operate in about 25 countries. There are bureaucratic and regulatory delays getting permission to sell and provide services in countries like India.

India’s permitting process has bogged down. If this turns and India permits Starlink to operate then they were expecting 200,000 users as fast as they could be provisioned.

There are many rural and underserved areas in Africa, India, South Asia and South America. There could be a very large number of users in those areas as Starlink is completely built out.

Mobile Starlink Markets

Gaining regulatory approval to access new markets is Starlink’s biggest global challenge, said Jose Del Rosario, a Manila-based consultant at satellite industry firm Northern Sky Research. Mobile roaming will greatly increase its commercial appeal. “A few thousand aircrafts and hundreds of cruise ships can close the business case,” said Del Rosario.

There are about 26,000 active commercial passenger jets.

A private yacht captain based in the Caribbean started using Starlink last year because the price was so much lower than the up to $6,000 per month he had paid for commercial internet on the open sea.

In 2016, it was estimated that there were about 10,000 luxury yachts 79 feet in length in the world – 20 percent of them were sailing yachts. There are around 22,000 private jet aircraft in operation around the world.

In 2021, there are 314 cruise ships operating worldwide, with a combined capacity of 537,000 passengers. There are also hundreds of navy ships. Each large ship could use several Starlink dishes to provide service to crew. There is a limitation on how many can be used. A ship by itself in the ocean could have exclusive use of a satellite. This would mean 230 dishes per ship could be used to tap into 23 gbps of capacity for a satellites. Each dish would not necessarily be fully utilized. A ship that really wanted connectivity for everyone on board could theoretically justify one thousand Starlink dishes.

Starlink is able to provide services for RV (recreational vehicles). RV ownership is at a record high with 11.2 million households owning an RV in 2021. There are about 400,000-500,000 RVs sold every year. About 46 million people in the US take an RV trip each year. There is substantial RV activity and usage in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Germany, France and Japan.
