Could breakthrough in fusion ⚡️ be just around the corner? Fusion reactors offer almost unlimited clean pollution free energy by combining isotopes of hydrogen and helium. By harnessing this type of reaction that occurs in the hearts ♥️ of stars ⭐️, energy that is released can be captured to create electricity. . Fusion reactors around the world use either magnetic confinement fusion using tokamaks (bottom left) or inertial confinement fusion using lasers to fuse a small fuel pellet (bottom right). . Currently, fusion is not a viable energy source since more energy is required than released. . However, recent research suggests that a combination of the two methods using plasma guns (instead of lasers) could be used to overcome the Lawson criterion - ie where more energy is produced than lost in fusion. This research carried out at the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Plasma Linear Experiment hopes to use up to 36 plasma guns by the end of 2020 to achieve a sustainable net energy producing stellar nuclear reaction. .
