It’s in the Trees: January 2022 - The Yew Tree

This year I want to learn a little more about trees, so today I visited the old yew tree within #stmarythevirginchurch yard in Minster. I have no idea how old this maiden is but she’s clearly displaying the paunch of old age with a girth measuring over 4.6 metres.Unfortunately there was no tree hugging to be had as Yew trees are highly toxic - perhaps this is why they are so commonly associated with death & graveyards.After a walk in the January sunshine I spent the afternoon back at home reading all about Yew trees & their uses. There were a lot of facts about longbows.  But by far my favourite fact was that their drooping branches can root & form new trunks where they touch the ground. And because of this the yew came to symbolise death & resurrection in Celtic culture. How very lovely is that for the start of a fresh new year. #itsinthetreesitscoming
