Studs are saviours!

Car care during winter is one of the most important aspects, as important as changing your wardrobe from summer clothing to winter ones. Change the clothing of your wheels as per the season. This is faced in the region of harsh climatic conditions mainly winter season. The near freezing temperatures or snow covered roads are a nightmare for any driver. In some regions it is not just enough to fix the winter tyres, but also one needs to insert studs for extra grip and safety on road. Though they are illegal in some of the countries, some countries from Asia, North America allow seasonal application of them as they are still preferred for safety. There are two important aspects of these studs :- 1. Composition and 2. Installation !

They are around since 1890, but first documentation of popularity done from Scandinavia in 1950. Let’s see them one by one:

1. Composition of studs: They are made of an extremely hard metal called tungsten carbide. They weigh around 1.7 to 1.9 grams each (light though) and they protrude 1.2 to 1.5 mm from the surface they are inserted into. The outer “Jacket (this is made of softer metal, that anchors the stud in the rubber) is made of metal with a tungsten carbide pin inserted into the hollow through the centre.  Due to wearing of rubber this jacket too wears off at the same level of the rubber but the harder tungsten pin remains protruding.

2. Installation: The wheel is mounted on a machine that a stud gun attached to it. This gun is designed to install the studs perfectly. There are around 80- 100 holes for insertion and approximately 60 to 100 studs are inserted. Firstly the surface is sprayed with lubricant for proper seating. Then studs are loaded into the gun and basket is spinned to feed the studs into its designated gaps. Lastly, they are pressed and fitted into gaps using three pronged stud gun tip.

Ever wondered, after the snow melts, roads get back to showing their original asphalt look, what happens to these car or SUV studded tyres? Does one remove them immediately or leave them on for scratching the road surface (that is illegal again)? Actually, they need to be removed immediately but it is not very far that market will have magical studs that protrude at the push of button and retreat at the press again. Some companies in northern hemisphere (where the regions are snow covered for longer time in the year) have claimed to develop such wheels that come fitted with this technology. Already thinking of James Bond in the movie The Living Daylights?
