Beginning ordinary time by serializing issue 40 of #thetestcomic here on Instagram. This is the September 2022 issue and the conclusion of the 12 issue “Thousand Oaks” series that riffs off of some of Jack Kirby’s editorials from four of his 1970s return to Marvel titles: Devil Dinosaur, The Eternals, 2001: A Space Odyssey and, finally, Machine Man. #sundaycoloursupplement Panel from issue 35 of The Test, the April 2022 issue. “Thousand Oaks” moves on to a three part engagement with 2001: A Space Odyssey via #jackkirby’s adaptation and short lived follow-up series. This issue is my own “adaptation” of 2001, which is something of a mash-up of everything I learned reading Kirby’s editorials but also his comics and then also the book and the movie. As discussed in the issue, I am not a fan of the film. Including Kirby’s take on it was important for the thematic structure of “Thousand Oaks” but I somewhat dreaded engaging with it (vs thinking about dinosaurs in the first three issues). Challenges can be good and I have very much enjoyed what came out of digging in on this one. This image pairs with the one from yesterday. One of the reflections I had in looking at 2001 in its historical context is that it captures a cultural shift, at least for North America, in relating to space exploration. This image represents the emergent association of space with new age thinking and psychedelia, of which the “cosmic trip” is a representative image whether you think of it as a mind blowing or mind numbing. Of course, the idea that traversing the cosmos not only in the sense of travelling but in the sense of comprehending might be a process that either seemed or actually is beyond technology through something like astral projection was already an idea in science fiction and in some Kirby comics before Kybrick’s movie. The presentation of this image here is a bit different than it is in the printed issue (often I do little variations here since the context is already so different). In the spirit of the #sundaycoloursupplement I’ll note that issues 38, 39 and 40 of #thetestcomic are a “symphony in purple”. #ilovesecondarycolors From issue 38 of #thetestcomic the first part of “Machine Mail”, the final movement of the “Thousand Oaks” series. These final three issue bring us back to the individual and especially the outsider after having visited the prehistoric, the mythic and the cosmic. The adventures of X-51 / Aaron Stack / Mister Machine / Machine Man, first in the 2001 comic series then in a dedicated title are Kirby’s take on the sci-fi concept of the thinking, feeling, and overpowering, robot/android alone in a world of people. It’s interesting that Kirby calls the reader in his editorials to consider how they would react to such a being in their midst. Issue 37 of The Test, the June 2022 issue, wraps up for the set of three instalments reacting to and riffing off of #jackkirby ‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey comic adaptation and short lived follow-up series, and by extension, Kubrick and Clarke’s movie and novel. As I commented on the last post, sometimes I like using very basic sketches as a starting point. Image 2 is from my Thousand Oaks sketchbook. I’m pretty sure this was drawn from a memory of image 3, a rather well-known late Kirby image, not while looking at the comic. Issue 37 of The Test, the July 2022 issue, wraps up for the set of three instalments reacting to and riffing off of #jackkirby ‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey comic adaptation and short lived follow-up series, and by extension, Kubrick and Clarke’s movie and novel. This double page spread is representative of the “pivot point” that characterizes each of the stories in Kirby’s 2001 monthly comics. The series becomes an offbeat anthology of stories that start in fantastical prehistory before the monolith facilitates a fast forward to a typologically equivalent hero is a 2001-ish space age (in other words a future in which spacefarers wear space suits that look like the one Dave and his compatriot wear in the Jupiter voyage section of the movie).
