These bright pink sunshine mimosa pompons (also known as powderpuffs) are one of the reasons I love the Florida natural ground cover on our front yard. The other reasons are sunshine mimosa doesn’t need water, and it thrives without pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizer. And it rarely needs mowing, except perhaps once or twice a year. Mimosa Fun Facts

INTRODUCTION

Mimosa pudica is originally from South as well as Central America. It has however become a pantropical weed and can now be found in Asia and Africa.  It is called the sensitive plant because it has the ability to move very quickly when touched, shaken or in specific conditions.  Height average: 3-6 inches

GROWING CONDITIONS

Optimal growing conditions: Light: full sun to high pine shade.  Soil type – Adapted to a wide variety of soil types but soil must be well-drained.  Soil pH – 6.2-7.1, but will tolerate a pH as low as 4.7.  A pH below 5.5 is detrimental to nitrogen-fixing (N-fixing) bacteria. Soil moisture – slightly dry to slightly moist; drought tolerant when well-established.   Fertilization:  Supplemental fertilization will stimulate flowering since flowers originate on new growth; however, nitrogen will inhibit colonization of the roots by N-fixing bacteria. If fertilizing, use a low rate of controlled release fertilizer that will last throughout the summer. Fertilizers should contain no or low amounts of phosphorus (P) unless results of a soil test show that P is deficient. Potash applied in mid-winter to early spring may help to increase seed production and quality; base the application rate of potash on a soil test.

USE

Due to its low maintenance needs: mimosa’s are commonly used in commercial or residential areas. 

POLLINATORS

Honey bees are the only known pollinators of the sunshine mimosas.
