Wait, what do you mean you survived "heteronormativity"? I can understand the depression during puberty, but how is heteronormativity related to you being struck by lightning? I'm confused.

Well...the lightning thing was kind of a catalyst there too. Indirectly.

See, I came out to my parents when I was 15, and my mother tried say, “Oh, you’re just confused, sweetie. It’s probably the lightning messing with your head again.”

I’d had this implant wired into my skull a year before, by the way. I had the worst symptoms under control. But no, she’s always tried to play it off like I somehow turned gay because of brain damage, and that I’ll “get better someday.”

That wasn’t great for my mental health growing up. So yeah, since she and my dad separated, we don’t talk much anymore.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. What about your dad?

He’s been way more supportive. On my 18th birthday, he asked, “Hey, do you wanna maybe go out and hit on chicks?”

And I was like “Heck yeah!”

Glad he’s on your side.

Mhmm. Him, Gekko-chan, Kyoji-kun, and especially Setsu all helped me come to terms with who I am. And I feel much happier than I did back then.
