Y5's plot is a little messy from there being five protagonists, but I feel things converged pretty well regardless of that. Even though I wish they had more time to interact with each other aaaaaa. But I did start to get a bit confused around the end of Shinada's part because I was trying to keep track of who was actually important to stuff overall. And also baseball. Trying to understand all this terminology what's going on I don't have time to learn the plot anymore, game 🙄
Gameplay? God. The moment I was starting to get used to Saejima finally I had him snatched away from me by the story. So it felt like I was relearning his moveset every time afterwards 🫠 Akiyama is so easy to fight as, but Shinada was giving me slightly similar problems to Saejima. The enemy rate encounter in the old games was insane and they should go to jail for making the decision to do that tbh. I got into nearly 200 street fights at the start of the game. And kept running into fights right after I finished one. Directly. After. I found myself not doing a lot of side stuff. I think part of it was from trying to get to certain parts I really wanted to see, and part of it was because of who knows what really... The only character's side story I did was Saejima's, and I did almost all of their substories, tho. Besides Haruka's. I can see how someone who wants to do everything would get instantly burnt out. I just didn't
Story? Why the F U CK didn't they bring up Kiryu's thoughts and feelings on Majima after he hauled ass back to Tokyo to find answers. That was the whole initial reason he was there, and the writers were like "nah. Let's not touch that with a ten foot pole but here's Kiryu threatening to end that twink Baba." He didn't even directly react to knowing he's still alive. Like, that's one of the most glaring problems I have with it. It feels like someone ignoring an elephant stomping in the room. However I have to admit I didn't care for the out of left field relationship drama Majima had in the past. It was like a huge brick was dropped on me and then am anvil
Five catches some weird heat from people who want to pretend the whole thing never happened, and those that gave up on it super easily. To each their own of course. I just don't think it's nearly that bad, personally. Four is definitely my least favorite of the bunch. Next to six
my thoughts below the cut cause this post's already long </3
unfortunately for the rest of this website, shinada's baseball scandal was easy for me to follow on account of me being a baseball lover myself. BUT yeah i can totally see how the typical player will get lost on things like 'stealing signs' and either might take too much time googling terms and rules to pay too much attention to the plot, or not bothering to do that and just proceeding with the story without fully understanding what's happening
on that note though like i said in the last post, shinada's the strongest point about this game for me: him and his co-stars are just such fun characters, and my favorite thing about shinada is that his play style reflects his i'm-just-a-guy-fghting-for-his-life character. it's incredibly rough, unrefined, and sluggish- nothing you'd expect from a regular fighter like maybe kiryu or akiyama. from purely a gameplay standpoint though i get how it could be irritating when you're shifting from characters you're familiar with who move relatively similar to. Shinada. (affectionately). especially if you weren't using weapons beforehand and now you're trying to become accustomed to them if you don't want to raw dog his gameplay
speaking of akiyama though, while i did like how he and haruka get to team up (i also think the protags shouldve had more time to hang out, if not at least invite each other to karaoke </3) his part felt so short. t'was foreshadowing for being sidelined in y6, but yk even for the three seconds we get to play with him, and despite the minor nerf done to him, i love him too much to be too upset. plus that air-combo shit's Wack
all things majima related in Y5 were weird, but park was especially. Off. for me. as an antagonist, she's great- hell, even NOT as an antagonist she's great. but it's just a weird feeling how the game wants us to sympathize with her and ignore how she's been threatening kiryu and haruka this entire time and treat her like a martyr. i dont think park's the worst charcter and most evil character ever, but that's prob a post in of itself honestly. what does make me feel weird though is her and majima's relationship- i guess it's just weird hearing about it after y0 though, but i'm not forgetting this game was made way before y0 was even conceptualized. it sucks that we don't get to know about majima's reaction to her death though, and honestly i was hoping they would get to reunite at haruka's concert: he said he wouldn't see her until he was dead, and according to every news outlet at the time he sure was dead, if you catch my cold.
back to majima though, it DOES suck how we don't get to see how kiryu reacts to majima not actually being dead. it's as you said, that's the reason why he even came back in the first place, and now that he's fine we're just going to have to assume how he felt
for me, five was alright. yakuza game plots are hardly anything to write home about (unless it's 7 tbh i love 7 sorry not sorry), so i'm not overly pressed about the plot being the way it is. besides, i cant be mad about the plot when part of the plot is 'daigo's on thirteen doses of copium so he runs away and decides to give 20 mil yen to his old classmate cause Dreams'.
the only game plot that actually does deserve a 'that's so stupid' comment from me is Y4's plot 🥴

When I pushed on the door of the library, I felt lighter and I had a smile on my face. I was even starting to wonder if maybe I should give up on a love and sex life altogether. I knew it could bring joy and happiness, but at the exact moment, all it did was confuse me and make me nervous, and honestly, I didn't need that.
I smiled when I noticed Millie sitting behind the counter, her head leaned against her hand and looking down, probably deeply lost in a book. I stared at her a few seconds and saw her look up at someone who came to ask a question. She got up and they talked so I decided to walk the aisles to find something new to read. I ended up with a book full of random thoughts and sat at a table near the counter to make sure she'd see me. It took my friend only a few seconds to notice me and her lips curled as she raised her eyebrows. I waved slightly at her and checked my watch. I still had about ten minutes to wait and I just opened the book to start reading. It's only when I felt someone sit next to me that I got out of my thoughts a bit but I still had to blink a few times to get back completely to reality, turning around and smiling to Millie who leaned her elbow on the table and placed her chin on her palm, staring at me.
"I'm glad you came." she whispered, making me raise my eyebrows.
"I said I would, did you doubt it?"
She shrugged a shoulder and looked away. "When Louis said he'd come, it was a 50/50 bet to take."
"Perfect. That's the first thing you'll write down on your list."
She raised her eyebrows a bit surprised and I just got up and walked back to the desk where one of her co-workers was now sitting. I sent the girl a big smile and bent down slightly, asking her for paper and pen. She smiled back and started playing with a lock of her hair before nodding and giving me a few sheets and two pen. I walked back to Millie with a winner smile and she rolled her eyes, chuckling as I sat back down.
"T'was easy."
"With those eyes and that smile you can clearly get anything you want." she pointed out, rolling her eyes again.
"You almost sound jealous."
I gave her a sheet and a pen as she sighed, taking the pen in her hand and scribbling at the top to make sure the pen was working.
"I am." she confessed in a whisper. "It must be amazing to be you."
"Can I remind you that the girl I thought I'd spent my life with has broken my heart?"
"And then came back. I don't think you realize how lucky you are. Not about Grace coming back, but about everyone falling in love with you super easily." she explained, staring down at her sheet.
I looked at what she was writing and smiled sadly. 'All The Things I Hate About Lou'.
"How many times did you have your heart broken, Niall?" she continued, drawing hearts next to Louis' name.
"What do you mean?"
"How many girls did you fall for that didn't love you back? How many girls did you date and loved actually left you? How many of them made you cry?" she elaborated, making me frown slightly. "And I'm not even asking about the girls you just wanted to shag. I'm pretty sure not many refused."
"I've been through unrequited love, too, you know." I shook my head. "I know how it feels."
"You probably broke more hearts than the number of times yours has been broken." she added slowly with an other shrug and a sigh. "I'm not saying you didn't hurt or that your pain is not real or important I just mean..." she paused and shook her head, her eyes finally meeting mine. "I just mean that it must amazing to be you."
"Maybe it's time you see that it's also amazing to be you, Mill." I pointed out. "And the fact that Louis broke your heart doesn't mean you're not incredible, okay?"
I grabbed my pen and started writing X's on all the hearts she had drawn and finally added the number '1'.
"Okay..."
"Now write down how unreliable he is."
Millie looked up at me and her lips curled a bit before she chuckled. I waited until she was done and grabbed my sheet too, making a long vertical line in the middle before writing 'Grace' on the left and 'Summer' on the right. I separated both their cases in two too, writing 'pros' on both sides and then 'cons'.
I stared at the sheet for a minute or two and finally sighed. I had no idea what to write. Not because they didn't have qualities and flaws, but because I knew it would bring me closer to a decision I was clearly not ready to make.
"You don't have to write anything right now." I heard, feeling Millie's hand on my shoulder.
I kept my eyes on the sheets and licked my lips, nodding slowly and finally, I folded the sheet and put it in my back pocket. Millie got up and I did the same, forcing myself to put a smile back on my face and I walked past her. She followed me outside and when we were out, I stopped and turned to her, raising my eyebrows. I decided to put anything that had to do with love away for now, burring it deep in my brain for a while, focusing only on doing fun things.
"Okay, so what's your routine after work?"
She looked a bit surprised but finally turned around, pointing at a small restaurant not too far. "I go there first."
"Alright, let's go there, then."
I followed her inside and she ordered three pieces of pizza and three water bottles. The person behind the counter smiled and prepared the food, putting every slices of pizza in a different box. I watched Millie pay and grab the bag the guy was handing her before sending him a smile.
"Thanks Jon, I'll see you tomorrow."
We walked out and I raised my eyebrows, looking at her with an amused smile. "You literally know his name?"
"We all work around each other so we sort of see each other often. Not just with Jon but with other people too." she clarified, handing me a box. I grabbed it and she looked again in the bag for a water bottle, giving it to me too.
"Please, tell me the other pizza is not for Louis."
She looked up in my eyes and her lips curled. "No!" she chuckled as she started walking quicker. I followed her in an alley but frowned as I pushed my hands in my pockets. I was not sure why we were there but I didn't even have time to ask. I saw my friend bend down near a man who was sleeping and whisper something to him. He jumped slightly and she laughed, handing him a box and a water bottle. He sat up and grabbed both a small smile on his lips.
"What is it today, Millie?"
"Pizza." she pointed out. "How are you today, Ernie?"
I watched her interact with a homeless man just standing there and wondering who the hell was this girl I thought I knew, and why didn't I try to find out more about her before,
"Is your friend mute or just dumb?" the man asked, making my friend laugh.
"I'd have to pick the latter."
I frowned at her and took a step closer. "Hey! That's rude!"
"Ernie, this is my friend Niall. Niall, this is my friend Ernie."
I sent him a small smile and a head nod before Millie sighed and got back up, telling him she was leaving but that she'd be back the next day. She walked past me and I was about to follow her but finally took the few steps separating me from Ernie and handed him my box.
"Thanks, kid."
I nodded again and turned on my heels, jogging slightly to reach Millie who just looked at me with her lips curled on the left. I raised my eyebrows and shrugged, pushing my hands back in my pockets. "What?"
"Nothing."
I could hear in her voice that she was thinking about something but I couldn't decipher the way she was looking at me. I smiled back at her and finally cleared my throat. "Okay, what's next?"
She took her slice of pizza out of the box and took a bite before handing it to me. "Once a week, I go to the movies and the other days, I just go in the old dvd and vhs shop where they sell old movies for a buck or two."
"And what's today?" I replied, my mouth full of pizza. "The shop. Cinema is on thursday because it's pay day."
"Makes sense."
We walked inside a small shop and the bell placed on top of the door rang gently. She waved at the employee and he waved back before she chose an aisle and tilted her head on the side to read the titles. It took her about five minutes before her lips curled and she grabbed one. It was a tape and I started wondering if she even had a VCR to watch it.
"This. Did you ever see it?"
She handed me a box and I raised my nose up when I noticed Leonardo Dicaprio on the cover. I turned the tape around and noticed the incredible landscapes pictured. The images would probably look even better on DVD or in 4K but I didn't mention it and just nodded. It was her routine, not mine, and I was extremely curious to find out more about her.
"Nop, never."
"It's a good movie, with a few French actors."
I followed her to pay and the guy behind the counter smiled and nodded. "Ah, nice one."
"I know right? I think I'm gonna keep this one."
"A movie where Leonardo Dicaprio goes nuts? Good idea to keep it." he added, making her chuckle.
"And the girl is nice to look at, too." Millie added, making the guy nod frenetically.
I looked around the place, quite surprised at how many choices they had. How many nice places like this was I missing on? And why didn't I ever hear about them?
"What did you mean when you said you'd keep this one?" I asked when we walked out.
"Oh, when I bring back three movies, I can trade it for one. I do that sometimes."
I turned to look at her and she did the same just to send me a smile before turning her head back in front of her. We kept walking but I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I thought I knew Millie but I had just realized that there were so many things about her that she didn't share and that I didn't take the time to ask, I knew that even if our friendship was not recent, our bond and how close we were was pretty new but at the same time, I felt like there were things I should know about her.
I should have checked where I was going because once again, I ended up running into a trash can on the sidewalk. Millie started laughing and I groaned, taking my hands out of my pockets before getting around it and walking quickly to her.
"Shut up." I mumbled, making her laugh even more.
"You don't seem like the clumsy kind of guy, I'm just surprised every time you run into something, and it seems to happen a lot!"
"Yea yea, how about you stop laughing and we just go back home to watch that movie?"
We had to watch the movie in her room for the simple reason that the videotape recorder was there and it seemed like way too much trouble to plug it in the living room. I made popcorn but Millie opened a few drawers and placed candies on her bed and it made me smile.
"Why don't you buy 6 or 7 movies at the same time? That way you don't have to go back there every day." I proposed, throwing some popcorn in my mouth and leaning against the wall with her.
"I can't know which mood i'll be in. It's a spur of the moment thing." she explained as the movie started. "Plus, I love going there."
"And what do we do after watching the movie?"
"It's dinner. Then shower, a few episodes of a netflix show, and bed time."
We watched the movie for a while and I had to admit the plotline was good, even if a bit fucked up. Millie was also right about the girl : she was very nice to look at and somehow, it made me glance at her.
"That girl is hot as fuck." I admitted, making Millie burst into laughter as she pushed an other candy in her mouth.
"I know right! And she's your type, too! I knew you'd like her!"
I blinked a few times and once again turned to my friend, leaning my head on the wall. I hated when she said that. I knew she didn't mean anything by it but I didn't want to admit that I would use some sort of base or mold to pick a girl. I hated thinking that I was shallow to the point where other girls who were not 'my type' wouldn't catch my eyes or stand a chance with me. And most of all, I hated that Millie saw me like that. I was about to start a discussion about it when Millie talked again, her eyes still glued on the tv.
"What about you?" she glanced at me. "What's your routine?"
I crossed my arms on my chest and shrugged a shoulder as my nose raised up in a grimace. "I don't have a routine anymore. My routine used to be with Grace and when she left, it became netflix from when the sun rises until it would set."
The fact that it was just being clear to me made something twist in my stomach. Who the fuck was I? Could I remember who I was before Grace? And now, with Summer, was I really myself?
I took the sheet out of my back pocket and unfolded it just as Millie handed me a pen and a book to write on. I looked up at her and sent her a small smile before writing under the cons in Grace's column. 'She decides everything'
"You know, I think that's part of why you annoyed me so much." Millie admitted. I looked up from the sheet and sent her a frown. Her traits softened and she sent me a sorry smile. "She would just tell you what she wanted and what to do and you'd never argue. She was bossy and controlling."
I couldn't pretend she was not right and I nodded with a sigh. "You know the worst? Summer is exactly the opposite. She's super compliant and it can get quite annoying."
Millie raised her eyebrows at me. "Well I guess you found something to write in the cons for Summer."
I sighed again but louder this time before looking down at my sheet again. I wrote down what I had just said and shook my head a bit. It was pathetic that the first things I thought about writing were flaws and I closed my eyes, letting my head fall against the wall in a loud noise after closing my eyes. "This is ridiculous, I can't choose."
"Hey, relax, it's just day one."
I felt my friend move on the bed and forced myself to open my eyes, noticing Millie was now facing me with a small smile. "We have 6 more days to fill that sheet." she slapped gently my thigh with the back of her hand and licked her lips as they curled more. "Trust me."

The Sound of Life: Chapter 2
Tumblr media
They were told that Winslow was in operating room 3 and searched for it. Phoenix soon became very sleepy, but she was determined to stay awake. After a while Harold almost had to carry her.
"I suggest we sit down and wait," Archie said.
"Yeah," Jeffrey agreed when suddenly the door to the room opened.
A doctor walked out and Phoenix rushed over to him. "How is he?"
"We're working on him," the doctor said. "Uhm, by the way, Miss, do...do you know, by any chance, what his name is?"
"Winslow Leach," she mumbled.
"Excuse me?"
"Winslow Leach." She looked him in the eyes.
He frowned. "But...hold on, sorry, but... Winslow Leach? The composer? Didn't he die?"
"Yeah, I thought so too," Phoenix sighed. "Listen, Doc, I've had a rough week and an even rougher night and I am so tired..."
"Alright, alright. You can sit down here on the bench. A nurse will come to you when he wakes up."
She nodded sleepily. "Uh-huh."
The Fruits and the singer sat down on the bench. Phoenix fell asleep almost immediately. Archie disappeared into the cafeteria and reappeared with a bag of crackers that the Fruits shared.
"Thanks Doc," Harold said when he noticed that Phoenix was already half asleep on his shoulder. "Come on, Goldfish, time to go to bed."
"So, what are we gonna do now?", Harold asked. "Swan's dead. Not that I liked the guy. But he filled up our pockets. And we're not even remotely close to being talented enough to write our own songs."
Archie laughed. "Yup. Thinking about it... we're just a bunch of losers Swan made popular."
"Yeah," Jeffrey agreed.
"Any jobs you guys had before this apeshit pop star business?", Archie asked the others.
Harold nodded slowly. "I was going to work in a supermarket. But the boss hated me. I don't think he'll take me back."
"Nope for me," Jeffrey admitted. "I failed school as thoroughly as possible."
"Really? I thought you'd be the teacher type."
Jeffrey laughed. "Good joke."
"So, in conclusion, we're just three dudes who lost their job," Archie concluded.
"Yeah."
"Yeah."
They sat in silence for a while.
"T'was nice though," Harold suddenly said. "Being in one band, you know. Going on tour together. Seeing our photos in the news. All that. Not because of the fame, just...you know, I like you guys. You're my best friends. My best and only friends."
"Honestly," Archie agreed. "I hate to be sentimental, but it was amazing. You guys were so much fun. I loved being one of the Juicy Fruits. You guys rock."
"Absolutely. All that touring together, the jetlags, the shows, getting yelled at by Philbin...it was such a great time and now... it's just over."
"Just over. All the illusions are gone. What's left are just three guys sitting in a hospital with a sleeping chick on their laps that isn't even their girlfriend."
"Strange place for the story to end, isn't it?"
"Strange place."
"I'm gonna miss it."
"Me too."
Finally the door opened and a nurse walked out.
Harold gently tapped Phoenix. "Hey. Hey. Phin'. The nurse is here."
Phoenix jumped up. "How is he?"
"He's awake now," the nurse said.
"Can I see him?", Phoenix asked. "Please!"
"Yes. He asked to see you. But-" The nurse handed her a noteblog and pen. "-we had to take off the device he used to speak. He can't wear it until the wound has healed."
"Okay. Thanks." Phoenix hastily rushed into the room.
Winslow was lying on the bed. Machines were buzzing around him and a beeping sound told Phoenix how rapid his heartbeat was.
"Winslow," she whispered.
A wince escaped his throat. It was obvious that he was trying to speak.
"The doctors said that you can't wear the voice box until your wound has healed," Phoenix explained. She handed him noteblog and pen and sat down at the edge of the bed. "How are you?"
He gave her a weak smile.
"Okay I guess" he wrote down.
"Does it hurt?"
"Just a little. They filled me up with painkillers."
"Good. I mean - good that it doesn't hurt that much." Phoenix smiled helplessly. Winslow laughed a little.
"You gotta explain a lot to me," Phoenix said.
"I guess I do." Winslow sighed. "What do you want to know?"
"Tell me everything. From the beginning. Why you came to New York. What Swan did. How you survived." Phoenix looked him in the eye. "Everything."
"Well..." Winslow started scribbling. After five minutes he gave Phoenix the first piece of paper and she started reading.
Suddenly she dropped the paper in shock.
"Swan had your teeth pulled out?!"
Winslow nodded.
"Why would he do that?!"
Winslow shrugged his shoulders and wrote something down. "Humiliation I guess."
"That's horrible!" She hesitated. "Can... can you show me?"
He nodded slowly and opened his mouth. Two rows of blinking metal glittered in the light of the lamps. Phoenix gasped.
"Oh my God...how cruel is that?"
He laughed a little.
"Winslow, you were tortured."
He shrugged his shoulders again. His expression said I know.
Phoenix picked up the paper again, but was quick to let out another gasp. "Wait - what?!" She looked Winslow dead in the eye. "You were at the audition?"
He nodded.
Phoenix took a deep breath. "Winslow Leach, are you honestly trying to tell me that I was right thinking that you were always around whenever my career got another boost?"
He laughed and nodded. Phoenix facepalmed. "Oh...my...God. This is the worst. I'm so embarrassed right now."
Winslow smiled a little. Then the smile died down.
"I know that I hurt you, that night, on the roof," he wrote down. "And I know that there are wounds that can never be closed. But I hope that we can at least try."
"Winslow," Phoenix whispered. His eye widened in fear. "Winslow... I've forgiven you already. Whatever you did that night, you've redeemed yourself by saving my life. You were ready to give your life for mine. The only question is... can you forgive me?"
A wince escaped his throat and something, a sound, that slightly resembled that of her name. His lips twitched and then he smiled. It was a weak smile, but it was sincere.
Suddenly the door slammed open and the Juicy Fruits stormed in.
"We investigated!", Harold panted.
"Yeah, we couldn't believe it, but...!"
"We thought we owe you an apology...!"
"...scraped this together...!"
"I even went to the police station and told them to fucking investigate, but Swan controlled everything...!"
"Guys!", Phoenix calmed them down. "Guys, relax, Winslow literally just woke up!"
Archie and Jeffrey shut up, Harold kept talking. "... anyway, Mr Leach, we decided we owe you a big fat apology, scraped together seventy percent of what we earned with Faust and hereby hand it over to you." He gave Winslow a thick envelope. When Winslow opened it dollar bills fluttered out.
He gasped, counted the money, then gasped again. The sum was enormous.
"Thank you!", he hastily scribbled down.
Archie shrugged his shoulders. "Seventy percent. You probably deserve more, but the bank thought I was high again and wouldn't give me more. Besides..."
"It's enough, it's more than enough!" Winslow laughed. Harold and Jeffrey sighed in relief.
"Hallelujah," Jeffrey said most sincerely. "We were so worried that we messed this up."
"We didn't want to be dicks, you know?"
"Just wanted to do our job and ended up being the bad guys."
"Relax, I'm not angry. Sorry for trying to bomb you guys up."
"Is my singing that bad?", Jeffrey asked.
"Yes, it is," Archie replied. "Sometimes even I want to bomb you up, man."
"Thank you." Jeffrey glared at him and Harold laughed out loud.
"What are you guys going to do now?", Winslow scribbled down.
The Fruits fell silent and threw each other nervous glances.
"Well...", Harold began. "We discussed that outside while you two were talking here and...uhm..."
"We decided to split up," Archie said quietly. It was obvious that the words were hurting him.
Phoenix' eyes widened. "Split up?"
The Fruits nodded.
"Swan's dead. Death Records is finished," Jeffrey explained. "We're not even remotely close to being talented enough to write our own songs. They just used us as mannequins. We've got no image."
"Swan was always the biggest ad. Swan presents the Juicy Fruits - you can't believe how much more the Swan presents counted." Harold sighed.
"You don't have to split up," Winslow wrote. "You can try and start again, only this time being yourself instead of being someone you're not."
Archie laughed sadly. "There's no ourselves. Ourselves are boring talentless farts who can't sing or write or play anything."
"That's not true," Phoenix suddenly said.
The Fruits laughed. "It is."
"No, it's not. Archie, I saw you improvising at that one show where the guitarist was sick. And Harold, I have a copy of that duet you sang when you weren't famous yet. It's awesome. And Jeffrey - you've got potential. Loads of it."
The Fruits blushed.
"Uh, thanks," Archie mumbled.
"You've got that duet? There were just, like, fifty copies!"
"I know." Phoenix smiled bashfully. "Found it in a thrift shop and thought, hey, why don't you listen to what your colleagues did before they got famous."
"Oh my God."
Winslow snapped his fingers to catch their attention again. "Is anyone here interested in founding a label with me?"
Silence.
"Hell yeah, that's genius," Phoenix suddenly said.
"Right."
"Awesome."
"We're in."
