Song Review: Yusuf/Cat Stevens - “Where Do the Children Play?”

First the bad news: Yusuf/Cat Stevens has re-recorded Tea for the Tillerman for its 50th anniversary.

Next the better news: The lead single isn’t as bad as Sound Bites anticipated.

And, finally, the expected news: The 2020 remake of “Where Do the Children Play?” is still pretty weak.

Outfitted with cheesy strings, overbearing keys and backing vocals that sound like they were put there as an afterthought, the new version could almost be mistaken for an entirely different artist if not for the fact that the singer’s voice has undergone fewer changes in the past half-century than his name.

Out Sept. 18, Tea for the Tillerman² finds Yusuf/Stevens reunited with original producer Paul Samwell-Smith and guitarist Alun Davies for the 11 remakes.

“Like it was destiny waiting to happen, T4TT² feels like the timing of its message has arrived again,” Yusuf said in a statement.

Perhaps.

But an expanded edition of the 1970 LP with contemporaneous outtakes and alternative versions seems like a better way to celebrate - particularly if the new, ultimately pointless, “Where Do the Children Play?” is any indication.
