Go for the Gold!!!
In reading several magazines and periodicals on higher education, I have noticed a new theme โ€“ seems like consultants and counselors are now directing their students to negotiate with their #1 college to see if they can get more money. They are recommending that students show their favorite college other scholarships they received (obviously they must be larger than the money offered by the favorite college) to see if the scholarship from the favorite college can be increased. They call this negotiating.
This all sounds great on the surface, but letโ€™s take a closer look. 22 years ago, we came up with this very concept -- but with a different spin. We encourage our students to apply to a well designed group of colleges -- individually selected just for them -- that specifically offer the best possible educational experience based on their grades, test scores, and interests. However, in personalizing a studentโ€™s list of colleges, two ingredients are absolutely necessary โ€“ ability to offer scholarship money and inclusion of schools that will actually compete with one another. This is the part of the formula that everyone overlooks. This is what consultants and counselors do not understand โ€“ negotiating begins with selecting the right colleges. It is not a plug and play process.
For over 22 years, Lana has gathered data that takes the guesswork out of choosing the right colleges. We have history helping students at colleges throughout the country. As consumers, our students need to be in control โ€“ too many times, with incomplete information, students feel like they are in a hopeless haze.
Questions to ask:
1. Do I have the best list of colleges for me based on my grades, test scores, and interests? (Not a generic list!)
2. Have I included colleges that are capable of merit scholarships? (For 22 years, we have tracked this information!)
3. Will my colleges compete with one another? (Our database provides this knowledge!)
Our passion is for our students, and each student is treated as an individual โ€“ one size does not fit all!
