Why I’m no longer using #instagram’s image description... I was overjoyed when Insta added the functionality to add ALT text to posts meaning those who are visually impaired and use screen readers could hear a description of the image written by the poster. However the implementation of this by instagram has fallen well short of the mark. Users have to look at the advanced settings to find the text entry so if you don’t know it’s there it’s hard to find. Secondly if you use screen magnification rather than text to speech there is no way to read the alt text without switching to text to speech... I find this incredibly annoying! If I can’t read the text on an image or what it is a picture of I switch over to #VoiceOver find the image I was looking at again and then discover there is no alt text anyway! Finally for me this is the biggest reason I automatically send my insta posts to #Facebook - I’ve learned while the caption and image is sent across to Facebook alt text is not! Given Facebook and Instagram are basically the same company I find this really difficult to understand. I’m also annoyed because personally I’ve been making a bigger effort to add alt text to make my posts accessible... I now realise when I share them I’m actually making my content inaccessible! So I’m going to stop using instagrams #ALTtext and go back to the old way of adding descriptions in the caption. Finally I would really like to raise awareness of this issue so I’m going to tag some creators and organisations please consider sharing as a better solution needs to be found: @rnib @rnc_hereford @guidedogsuk @kika_guidedog @macularsociety @invisibledisabilities @opensighthampshire @makedaisychains @dailyecho @doodlepeoplexo @zox @allaccesslife @takingthedis #a11y #accessibility #ALTtext #Blind #BlindPeopleOfInstagram #WebAccessibility #Instagram #Facebook #SocialMedia #LowVision (Image Description: a coral background with the words ‘Why I’m no longer using instagram’s image description’ written in white. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9HM9dmnnrd/?igshid=1prwrar8yftqd
