Yerevan Free Day
Saturday was a free day before the start of our tour.  So we looked at things we wanted to see that were onto on the tour itinerary.
Local markets are always on my list, so we headed to the G.U.M. Market on the other side of downtown a little over a mile away.   As we walked the sky started darkening and we remembered the umbrellas back in the room, but our mothers told us we wouldn’t melt and we’ve found that to be true, so walked on.  As we got close to the market there were rumblings and some moisture, but not much before we got inside.   
Armenia grows a lot of fruit and it was on display in fresh mode as well as dried and candied.   The dried and candied came loose and packaged in beautifully arranged displays on plates, the later clearly for tourists.

Well, that would be us and we did pick up a couple of them.   An unusual item is the long lumpy sticks hanging over the displays, strings of walnuts dipped in thickened fruit juice.   I grew up in Missouri with black walnuts which are very bitter and I hated them.  It was only when we started traveling that I got European walnuts which are  much less bitter, and I decided that some walnuts could be good.  In any case the Armenian walnuts are as good as any I’ve had.   The dipped walnut strings were good, but I can’t imagine how to get the sticky things home.

We grabbed a break in the rain to head back downtown, and got almost to the History Museum before it picked up again.   After a stop for some coffee and to let the rain let up, we went into the museum.   Unfortunately no photos were allowed inside, because it was really a fascinating place.  We were particularly struck by the early history of the region.  There were wonderful pieces of pottery and metalwork from the 2nd and 3rd millennium B.C. The level of workmanship in this time period was really amazing, especially since I knew nothing of Armenia from then.   I left wondering how such an advanced society existed away from our history books.  A little research later on revealed what I suspected: Armenia was a major mining and mineral extraction location and exported  bulk copper, tin, lead, silver and gold as well as finished items to Mesopotamia Egypt and more.  Records mention Mesopotamian kings attacking Armenia and hauling away tons of metals as plunder.
We missed another bout of rain while in the museum and were able to get back to the hotel in the dry afterwards.  
For dinner we went to Sherep, a little more upscale Armenian restaurant in a Marriot Hotel.  We were able to try a mix of traditional dishes and some more modern variants.   The make their own bread in traditional pit ovens called tonirs, basically the same as the Indian tandor.   Like in the tandoor, the bread is baked stuck to the side of the oven.   The most typical bread is the lavash a paper thin bread that is still soft and flexible.  We always saw women working in pairs, one rolling out the dough, the other stretching it over a cloth covered board and sticking it into the side of the oven for just a minute or two before using a hook to get it back out.
