While the fifth floor apartment isn't a penthouse in Manhattan or a Tower soaring above the skyline as a monument to someone-else's proverbial shortcomings, it does take up the entire floor save the stairs, the elevator permanently on the fritz and the landing. Riley's framed by the doorway, his shoulders brushing the wall and the door he answers and there's a moment's confusion written into his chiseled features. With his sister at work, and the streets slick with rain, he expected nothing but a quiet evening at home. There's a fire in the marble hearth, behind him the smell of fresh baked bread, cigarette smoke, and the faintest hint of bourbon. His guitar leans against the leather chair even if she can't see into the open space of what great-room. That look flashes in a heartbeat before he settles into a sharp degree of concern. "Gemma?" Okay, so a while ago @whindsor asked me about my dream Legend of Zelda show and while I tried to answer on my computer, chrome kept crashing because my ideas were too amazing.

So here it is:

As much as I would love to see a brand new story with a bunch of amazing characters and new ways to develop them, I’m so afraid that people would ruin it with awful writing.

My main pick is 100% Ocarina of Time. It’s the most well known, has a large cast of interesting characters, and has a plot that could keep people invested.

My second choice is Breath of the Wild.

That being said, my choices for the main three would stay that way regardless of what game they used.

CAST:

Link: Colin Ford.

While I prefer Link to be an unknown, especially because translating his character is going to be hard enough without worrying whether or not the person they chose could act, this is a fan cast and I can’t just say, an unknown for my pick.

I scoured some sites with some online FanCasts and Colin Ford was really the only one that I liked. He’s been in the industry forever and we know he can lead a show because he was on Daybreak (which is amazing). He also just looks like how I would imagine Link (aside from the hair but we can just dye it)

Honorable Mentions: Bradley James, William Moseley

Princess Zelda: Eliza Taylor

Zelda is a hard role to cast. She needs to be a strong leader who has agency, but also compassionate and kind. Eliza Taylor is excellent at walking those two lines and her performance in the latest season of “the 100″ only cemented that for me.

Eliza Taylor wasn’t the first one that came to mind, but she’s the best one for this type of role. She’s been playing the Burdened leader for years. On top of this, she has experience in stunts and fight scenes which lends itself well to Sheik, and she looks like Zelda. I think she could play off the other two really well.

Honorable Mentions: Hannah New, Caity Lotz

Ganon/Ganondorf: Manu Bennett

This is non negotiable. Manu is the best person for the role of Ganondorf period. He has the look, and he’s amazing at playing intimidating and complex villains. Manu has the ability to garner sympathy for his characters, regardless of how evil they may seem. 

On top of this, He’s been in the industry forever, has experience with filming Fantasy shows and stunts, and he just has the commanding presence that Ganondorf needs. His voice is also perfect for the role, with his accent not too heavy but still there to sound unique.

Ganon was always the hardest one for me to cast, but since finding Manu I can’t imagine anyone else in the role.

Honorable Mentions: Idris Elba

The Sages

note: these are based on looks and vibes. Their explanations will be short and sweet.

Rauru: Ian McShane or Jonathan Pryce

I’m torn between the two of them because they’d both make great mentor-type figures to Link, so I just listed them both. They have the same vibe, and have played these types of roles before (although I haven’t seen much of Ian McShane’s filmography)

Impa: Adina Porter

Zoe Saldana will always be my number one pick for Impa, but since she’s kind of a big deal, I went with someone who could just as easily pull off that role. Adina has played the mentor role before while kicking ass and can walk the fine line between motherly and strict, which Impa is. She’s a fantastic actress and would be awesome as Impa.

Honorable Mention: Thandie Newton

Saria: Millie Bobby Brown

My thoughts with the sages were that this was an area where they could utilize bigger names since they don’t appear onscreen that often. Millie Bobby Brown could definitely draw in some fans, especially if this was on Netflix. She also has the look and demeanor of Saria down, and she’s young enough to portray her.

Honorable Mention: Kiernan Shipka.

Darunia: Dwayne Johnson

Again, I was thinking Star Power, and Dwayne Johnson would be perfect as Darunia. His nickname is “the Rock”. Dwayne Johnson is familiar with comedic relief roles and I think he would really bring out the fun side of Darunia, especially if you imagine him doing the dance to Saria’s song.

Honorable Mention: Nonso Anonzie

Ruto: Gemma Chan

There’s no one else I want cast for this role than Gemma Chan. She’s excellent at playing those aloof-type princess roles and could bring a more serious and sympathetic side to Ruto, especially because she’s already a pretty divisive character depending on who you talk to. 

Nabooru: Summer Bishil

My love for Summer is no secret, but I genuinely think she could do such a good job playing Nabooru. If her work in the Magicians is any indication, she knows what she’s doing and puts a lot of thought into her characters, which needs to be done for the Gerudo, especially because of the not-great history of racism Nintendo has when it comes to them.

31: they’re given a blank piece of paper–what do they do with it? Vic Might end up writing some like. Stream of consciousness type journaling. And then ripping that up into very very tiny pieces.

Yen If he hasn’t written a letter home in a while (so like, two or three days) he’ll do that. Otherwise just a lot of little doodles -- the kind you’d expect to find a teenager drawing in the margins.

41: what are they attracted to in other people? Vic Magic is,,, really attractive okay. He loves watching people do magic. Especially the like, absentminded kind, the utility stuff that just comes so naturally. Confidence, definitely (sometimes bordering on cockiness). Someone willing to have his back in a fight. (aka: the definitive way I figured out Vic was not at all attracted to women, bc if he were, Nol would be his type)

Yen He is still, admittedly, figuring that out himself (being a teenager and all), but. Compassion. Willingness to have Fun but also like,,, not the kind to potentially get you arrested pls. Someone who appreciates his stupid jokes and will for whatever reason listen to his rambling tangents.

44: what do they need to learn? Vic how to take care of himself dammit Like. It all boils down to that, but more specifically stuff like how okay it is to share your problems with friends, how you can’t keep helping people if you wear yourself down to nothing, how you are also worth helping. oh does he try.

Yen You don’t have to be okay all the time. Being cautious about people doesn’t automatically mean writing them off. It is good to be cautious about people because while the bad ones might not be the majority, they are out there and it does well to keep an eye out for them.

45: how do they hug people? Vic Like it could be the last. Because, as he has learned the hard way, that is a very real possibility. He uses all of that 18 strength and he means it. He likes hugs. Whether quick parting ones or after some deep conversations or the utterly relieved ones after a bad fight.

Yen Depends on the circumstances, but usually it’s a surprisingly strong and fairly quick squeeze. Sometimes looks all embarrassed but he won’t fight it. Kenneth W. Cain first got the itch for storytelling during his formative years in the suburbs of Chicago, where he got to listen to his grandfather spin tales by the glow of a barrel fire. But it was a reading of Baba Yaga that grew his desire for dark fiction. Shows like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and One Step Beyond furthered that sense of wonder for the unknown, and he’s been writing ever since.

Cain is the author of The Saga of I trilogy, United States of the Dead, the short story collections These Old Tales and Fresh Cut Tales, and his latest Embers: A Collection of Dark Fiction. Writing, reading, fine art, graphic design, and Cardinals baseball are but a few of his passions. Cain now resides in Chester County, Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.

  1. How old were you when you wrote your first story?

Five or six, I believe. It was an awful rendition of the whole Baba Yaga thing.

  2. How many books have you written?

Written or published? Written, I would say, so far: 6 novels, 5 novellas, 4 collections of short stories, and maybe a hundred stories that aren’t in those books that will likely end up in other collections. As well as a bunch of poetry, a lot of which is in a themed collection, most of which is still unpublished. The most recent releases will be a novella titled A Season in Hell (due out September 7th) and my next collection, Darker Days (due out December 7th).

  3. Anything you won’t write about?

No, I don’t believe in taboos. There are stories in every taboo. They say not to kill the dog, but there’s a story there as well. It’s been done, too. I have to tell the story I have to tell. If it’s in me, it’s going to get out, like it or not.

  4. Tell me about you. Age (if you don’t mind answering), married, kids, do you have another job etc…

I’m 48, married to a wonderful woman with two kids. I write pretty much full-time, other than keeping up chores around the house and coaching my son’s baseball teams.

  5. What’s your favorite book you have written?

It has to be A Season in Hell. This short book tackles many modern issues, things that matter to me. It’s hard-hitting, and a love story for the game of baseball.

  6. Who or what inspired you to write?

If I had to put he onus on just one person, it would have to be my mom. She loved horror, and growing up, I saw several movies (The Omen, Psycho, etc). They fueled my passion, but so did discovering the stories in the various Writer’s Digest books my parents kept on their shelves. It’s there I discovered Poe. Or perhaps it was hearing that Baby Yaga story for the first time.

  7. What do you like to do for fun?

Read. That’s fun for me. I also like to check out an original series now and then. Nothing that’s been rehashed or rebooted but something really original. Like Dark on Netflix. I also like gardening, fishing, coaching baseball, trying to play my guitars, drawing and painting, hanging with my family, and enjoying the beauty of this world.

  8. Any traditions you do when you finish a book?​

Wine! A bottle of Merlot, something like Smoking Loon.

  9. Where do you write? Quiet or music?

I have an office…now, with a desk and all, though it’s more like a dungeon to me. As for music, it varies. Sometimes it’s music, which can be anything from Pink Floyd to Metallica to Sinatra. Other times, I listen to baseball games or baseball chat. Then there are the podcasts I listen to, sometimes chat about the craft and other times stories. My brain is usually able to separate the two, so I can write a story and still hear what I’m listening and process it. Kind of weird. But there’s also times I need silence.

  10. Anything you would change about your writing?

Well, I would have started much earlier for one. I don’t know why I started so late, but it often feels like it’s too late. And I’d be far more patient, not taking the first offer, honing my craft before I rushed out there. I likely wouldn’t have hurried to get so much out there.

  11. What is your dream? Famous writer?

I’m living my dream. At least I think I am. I get to write a lot, read a lot, do all the things I enjoy. I married an awesome woman who is SO supportive of all my endeavors and two really bright children who are blossoming into great adults. And sometimes, once in a very great while, someone will leave a kind review or contact me or make a post about something I wrote, and it will touch my heart deeply. Who could ask for more?

Chester County, Pennsylvania.

  13. Pets?

I recently got rid of all my reef tanks, but I’ve had several over the years, as well as many, many birds. Right now, though, I have two dogs, a Catahoula leopard mix named Iggy and a Labradoodle named Kady. They’re both sweet, loving dogs.

  14. What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Getting it all out of my head. It’s cathartic; helps me sort my thoughts and feelings in a way I can deal with them. I’m putting myself out there for my readers, getting naked with my feelings. Hopefully they get something from my stories that elicits a similar feeling.

  15. What is coming next for you?

A young adult novella entitled Shadows in the Storm where Nita faces off with Shade, leader of the Shadow People. Though I still have to work on finding a publisher for the book.

  16. Where do you get your ideas?

My inspiration typically starts with a seed from something I know quite well. For instance, with A Season in Hell (due out September 7th from Crystal Lake Publishing) I drew from my long career playing baseball, as well as coaching. The story is about a woman playing baseball in the minor leagues back in the nineties and what she must endure just to play the game she loves. For that story I took from my own personal experience, even down to the smallest details like taping up a torn muscle with duct tape just so I could play the next game.

  There’s another element to the process, what I call the “what if” moment. You’ll see a lot of that in my shorter work. For instance, there’s this story in my collection Fresh Cut Tales entitled “Split Ends.” I was sitting at a pool while on vacation watching a mother furiously brush the knots out of her daughter’s hair and thinking about the “what if.” In this case, what came to mind was a disease, one the mother and daughter thought was very real, and it was but only mentally in this case. So that story is about the struggle of a mother not to succumb to that mental disease.
