Facebook for Teachers and Administrators
Each year, I always strive to increase parental involvement. I aim to have open communication with parents that extend outside of the classroom. However, I am skeptical of giving all 28 parents my cell phone number. So, how can I have an open communication with parents that does not involve exchanging phone numbers? After further reading, I believe that Facebook can help achieve my goal.
With one billion users in 2012, Facebook can be used to increase parental involvement, inform the community, “show off” school culture, ask questions, make special announcements, etc. The article, Best Practices for Schools Using Facebook, provides administrators and teachers helpful tips when it comes to sharing school news of Facebook. Postings should be noteworthy, whether it is awards, recognitions, special visitors/guests, upcoming events, and school reminders (parental reminders such as half-days or emergency snow closings, etc.). By consistently posting current and useful information, your Facebook page will become a reliable source.
It is also important to share photos celebrating students’ work, field trips, and school wide celebrations. The article also suggests using the school logo or mascot as the profile or cover photo since it is used to greet visitors. To give visitors a sense of your school culture, videos of assemblies/pep rallies, science fair experiements, art displays, sporting events, concerts, student performances can also be posted on the Facebook page.
The article also provides 16 ideas that will help teachers and administrators fill their Facebook page. Those ideas include: mission moments (photo of your mission in action, feel good stories about the school), Fundraising (photos from fundraisers, special event save the date, in-kind donations), Volunteering, Connecting (thanking new volunteers, online e-newsletter, quote from board chair/teacher/student/principal), and conversation starters (Bullpen, 2013).

Unhappiness in the tech industry (or “some thoughts I have on TechLead”)
There are a couple of YouTube videos that came out recently, albeit unrelated to each other: “My wife left me (how success destroyed us),” by TechLead, and “What I do with my $250 thousand dollars a year,” by JonaTech.  I find it kind of funny how they both allude to the same problem.  JomaTech uses a data science mindset and tries to self-critisize his own reckless spending; TechLead, on the other hand, has a completely serious and personal video about how money and success couldn’t save his deteriorating marriage, and how he’s now unable to see his own son because his wife has left the country and broken ties to him.
To say that money and materialism can’t buy happiness is so widely-known and widely-shared that it’s become a cliche.  But money does solve some problems, and it’s what allows some people to be first-generation Americans and have parents who make very little, but still rise to ridiculous salaries and gain prestige.  Is that the American Dream?  Not quite.  On one hand, TechLead embodies the spirit of a typical, upwardly-mobile person in tech who rises by merit and attains wealth.  On the other hand, relationships don’t always work out.  These kinds of things happen.
There’s probably a healthy balance between ambition in a career and attention to family.  Where this balance is, is the question some people spend their entire lives trying to answer.
Granted, I still have a million things to learn about both.
*****
Not everyone likes the HBO series Silicon Valley, but I love it.  I tried to get my mom into it, and she argued that all the characters are unlikable.
The funny thing is that I can’t even argue with that.  She likes shows like Lost (well, maybe the first few seasons), which feature extremely likable and flawed characters who triumph in the face of a plot that’s fantastic and illogical.  Silicon Valley, on the other hand, is about characters based on real-life Silicon Valley figures who are confident, obnoxious, egotistical, flawed, and hilarious.  The plot sometimes stretches itself to the point of ludicrousness, on purpose, but for the most part the series is praised for being realistic.
At its core is one simple idea: The main character can either accept millions, right off the bat, or he can start his own company.  The significance, I’d say, is rooted in something that goes deeper than greed.  Richard doesn’t choose to start his own company because he’s greedy and wants more money; Richard chooses to start his own company because he believes in something, and now he has the funding to pursue it.  The act of having a career, of having a company, is another form of love.
Does it compare to the love for a child, or the love for a spouse?  All evidence points to no, but it’s interesting to consider.
NYTimes, reflecting in a tech column on its now famous article about the treatment of workers by Amazon (software engineers; Amazon’s treatment of warehouse workers is another issue entirely), states that tech is like any industry: It’s only different because the majority of workers can wear jeans without getting yelled at.  And I think that kind of hits it on the head.
Wisecrack, a popular YouTube channel, doesn’t agree.  It sees all the perks of tech life as a sort of facade to hide the mind-numbing.  I’m somewhere in between.  It’s a job.  It pays well because there’s demand, but at the end of the day the work is kind of similar.  Tech work is knowledge work.  Instead of producing something like hammers, or houses, or cars, tech workers produce software and tech products.  The process and the environment in which they work is somewhat unique, but it’s not fundamentally different from more traditional forms of science.  It’s problem-solving.
And yet...
Here we have one of the most inspiring tech people we’ve ever encountered.  And things aren’t going great for him right now.  Is it because he put money over family?  I don’t know if it would be fair to him to draw such a simple binary, or to attempt to reduce his current situation to a self-important Tumblr post about how this is a cautionary tale.
Tech is...weird.  Just like almost everything else.
Money is the weirdest.
In his words, they had a place to live, money, a child, success...
...and the only thing they had to do was enjoy it.  But they didn’t.

Technical Leadership 101: How To Become A Superstar Tech Lead
A company made up of people is, by design, organic. Any team is made up of individuals, who have their own unique perspectives on things. While some managers are tempted to squeeze their team to try and create a specific end-user experience, a good technical leader knows that rigidity can be brittle, and the best results come when the individuals in a well-curated group are allowed to express themselves in formation.
Of course, this doesn’t mean leaving everyone to their own devices, but with the right preparation, technical leadership simply supports, nudges, and leads their team towards the goal.
The Principles of Technical Leadership
Technical leadership follows a handful of key principles, many of which may be familiar from other classic leadership roles, but some are specific to the industry. Non-specific leadership principles include:
Delegation – Good technical leadership means letting go. Delegating the right jobs to the right people is key here
Teaching through example – Being a present member of the team guides through example and inspires respect
Team support – working for the team, not above them. A good leader holds everything together
Technical leadership requires these principles as well as more role-specific elements such as:
Creating talent – upskilling and reskilling are methods of developing your team’s skillset without the need for new hires.
Team formation – when it comes to hiring, it’s critical you consider the team as a whole, and how the individual fits in. Like casting for a movie, a successful interview process can make all the difference to your deliverables.
The Roles and Responsibilities of Technical Leadership
Ultimately, a technical lead is responsible for the direction of the project.
In Agile/Scrum methodologies, for example, incremental target achievement strategies are utilized to take the complexity of development and break it into manageable iterative steps.
These increments, or sprints, are approached by way of a multidisciplinary team, who commits (sets the target) at the start of each sprint and delivers (on the promise) afterward.
Many of these multidisciplinary teams have technical leads. These are people whose task is to provide support and mentorship to the group to make sure that the team is successful throughout the sprint. Further, they are responsible for planning and reviewing before and after a sprint, respectively.
Here’s a generalized, five-step breakdown of the responsibilities of a technical leader throughout the leadup, duration, and review stages of a sprint:

Edmodo
During a recent IEP meeting, Edmodo was mentioned. The student whom we were meeting about was having difficulties in writing and the general education teacher suggested the student type her assignments using Edmodo. I had never heard of Edmodo, so I decided to research it further.
Teachers can use Edmodo to assess student learning, review/edit classmates work, complete writing projects, organize book clubs, professional development workshops, sub-hub, mobile learning, planning committees, differentiate instruction, provide profession development opportunities. Edmodo provides the opportunity for teachers to connect with other educators around the world and share resources, communicate with students while the teacher is not in the classroom and provide information to students who are absent,

Learning with 'e's
Steve Wheeler advocates the use of blogging to produce students as writers. He also uses blogging as a communication tool with parents and teachers. His blog consists of several monthly posts regarding conversations he has with his students, student projects, and using videos as an assessment tool. One of his posts was about a project his students were assigned to do. The students had to create a short video, using no words, to tell the history of Plymouth. This allows students to use technology and use their critical and creative thinking skills.
