Astraea's Interlude aka Beating Forgiveness into Bedivere
Finally!! Astraea's Interlude is released in the NA version which means we get to help Bedi with his remaining hang-ups.
I suppose it's too much to ask for any more Bedivere appearances in the main story considering he already got a chapter all to his own, but I sure am going to jump at any chance to see him in other events, so I'm super glad I got Astraea during this year's Valentines. Now onto the Interlude!
Long post, so I'll put it all below under the cut, and this goes without saying, but spoilers for Astraea's Interlude and general Lostbelt and Camelot Chapter plot points!
Right from the start of the 2nd segment which features Bedivere, there is already one detail that tears at my heart - this background of open fields is the same one as Bedivere's own Interlude, because it's the view which reminds him of his failure to save Princess Helena from the Giant of Saint Mont Michel. I'm not sure how intentional it is, but I'm fairly sure this was a deliberate choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before we get to resolving Bedi's issues though, Astraea comments on Ritsuka's first. Another similarity between Ritsuka and Bedivere, really, the fact that they feel guilt for something they've done/are doing and man Ritsuka needs a LOT of therapy when all of this is over.
Tumblr media
He....;__;
Oh, btw...I never noticed it before, only when I read TV Tropes, but the nickname "Bedi" isn't actually used in game during Camelot. Merlin does use "Bedi" if you ask him about sending Bedivere in the Babylonia chapter, but not Ritsuka.
Ritsuka calls Bedivere that in the movie adaptations though, and it got backported into the game in this Interlude. (I do have a bit of a laugh at that, the fact that Ritsuka/Gudao nicknamed Bedivere in the movies and Bedivere just rolled with it, no questions asked).
What you do have the choice of calling Bedivere once in the Camelot chapter is "Beddy".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Beddy" makes me think of "teddy" in teddy bear lol. Teddybear - Bedivere sound awfully similar now that I think about it...
Tumblr media
Cue me jumping in the background saying, "How was he to know it was going to turn Artoria into a jerkass goddess??"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it it true that the Lion King is a truly warped existence of Artoria...poor Bedivere never heard her last words, if he did maybe it could have relieved him of his guilt, but he already dissipated by the time the Lion King said this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a strange way...Bedivere actually did save something of himself in making that choice, because it led him to meeting Chaldea and in turn, being heroic enough to be recorded in the Throne of Heroes. But of course he wouldn't see it that way.
Tumblr media
The fact that Ritsuka's dialogue choices are pretty much screaming "Don't beat yourself up for this!" tho - gahh, my heart!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would have to be willfully blind to ignore the terrible things in Camelot, because so many people did die (Rushd's mother just being one of them) but I stand by the fact that Bedivere did nothing wrong, ever.
All half-jokes aside, I think it would be more painful to have caused so much damage when you did it with good intentions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...I really don't like it, but I guess beating self-forgiveness into Bedivere is a good option at this point.
Tumblr media
In this battle, Bedivere starts out with "Feeling Guilty" which lowers his ATK and DEF every turn. Also, I defeated him quickly with the Asvatthaman I borrowed, but I don't think he uses Calm and Collected, he only ever used Oath of Protection as a skill.
I'm so so sorry for beating you up with fiery hot wheels man my sweet Bedivere -
Even if it was for your own good -
Tumblr media
Astraea says a lot of stuff here, but basically it goes, "Uh, no, man. We're here to help you. You're good."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not quite sure I agree with everything Astraea said here, but in this case what Bedivere really was looking for was absolution. Taking into consideration his character as the knight of loyalty, I guess he couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling that a punishment had to be handed to him, it's the only way he could make up for his mistake. Though really, he's not alone in that regard, Lancelot and Tristan have the same mentality when it comes to their failures to their King.
I do wish all of the KotR will be allowed to move on from that hang-up, but time will tell if they'll get that character development. Mordred seems to have moved away from that fixation with Artoria in her writing out of all of the KotR I currently have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we finally get to this point - the matter really was Bedivere's remaining sense of regret.
I wonder if canonically, Astraea suplexed Bedivere before giving him this therapy talk. Must have been one heck of a therapy session.
Tumblr media
Ha, but Bedivere poking fun at Astraea is great.
And seeing him smile at the end is so sweet!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ahhh, and the fact that when Astraea compliments Bedivere's show of courage, Ritsuka sounds so proud, like, hell yeah, that's my boy!!!
We love and support our one armed silver knight in this household...even if the love and support comes in the form of justice suplexes at times. So glad to finally see this Interlude play out but uh, I actually have to finish it and see if there's any more Bedi appearances lol, I was way too excited to post my thoughts that I haven't even finished the whole thing lol. And even then I pretty much hit the limit for images in one post, whoops. This scene was just too good though, I feel bad for cutting out some of the screenshots because it's already so long as it is.

A comprehensive run-down of all of Darcy’s medical conditions & how they affect his day-to-day life
Under the cut cuz it’s super long. Also linked via his bio portal on my muse page.
Medications
Adderall - ADHD
Methimazole - Overactive Thyroid
Mirtazapine/Remeron - Depression/Anxiety/Insomnia
Note: All of his dosages are much higher than would be considered safe for humans because of the combination of his insanely sped-up metabolism and not being human.
Accommodations
Darcy has a Siberian Husky service dog named Rocket who is trained both as emotional support and in safeguarding so that Darcy does not accidentally put himself in harm's way and get injured, as well as acting as an early warning system if Darcy is getting sick, as infection and injury can trigger a thyroid storm, which will put him in ICU if that happens.
He also requires a lot of support and a base level of supervision in his day to day life, meaning that he is unable to live alone without suffering detrimental effects to his health and mental state, and he is not legally permitted to drive (that doesn’t always stop him though).
As such, Darcy lives at home with his family, as it makes his life easier and he has the necessary support and supervision he needs at all times, while allowing him to have independence as an adult.
Dyslexia
Darcy’s dyslexia is considered severe, limiting his ability to understand all written forms of communication without assistance, and as such, he will often try to avoid reading and writing altogether if there is nobody around to help him. This is not an indication of Darcy’s level of intelligence. In fact, Darcy is an extremely bright and creative person. He just has difficulty expressing it through language, as he also has a tendency to forget words and correct sentence usage, particularly when anxious or upset.
His dyslexia manifests typically in visual disturbances while trying to read, confusing the order of letters in words, as well as putting letters the wrong way round and causing poor and inconsistent spelling.
He also has problems with short-term memory, carrying out sequences of directions, difficulty with planning and organization, remembering phone numbers, log-in details, email addresses, PIN numbers, etc.
As a child, Darcy had delayed speech development, and particularly struggled with pronouncing long words. He also often jumbled up even simple phrases (example - saying “Beddy Tear” instead of “Teddy Bear”), had little understanding or appreciation of rhyming words or nursery rhymes, had difficulty with learning letters of the alphabet as well as problems learning sequences, such as days of the week, and dyscalculia (difficulty in developing mathematical skills and understanding).
His handwriting is poor as a result of his dyslexia, so he will most often resort to using computers or his phone if he has to do something that requires him to express something via written word as he has learned touch typing, though he still has to rely heavily on autocorrect/spell checking and have someone else proofread for him most of the time.
ADHD
Darcy's ADHD is largely developmental, having been born prematurely. There is also a genetic component as he is not the first of Lilith’s children to have been born with the disorder. He is the most profoundly affected by it though due to the combination of his other disabilities.
His ADHD means that Darcy has a very short attention span, is very easily distracted, prone to forgetfulness more than the average person, struggles greatly with focusing/maintaining concentration for more than a few minutes and difficulty following tasks through to completion before switching to something else. He also has considerable issues with organization, prioritization, planning, time management and multitasking.
There are only a couple of exceptions when it comes to Darcy being able to focus for an extended period of time, and those are creative activities that involve his art or music, or game-playing; video games and tabletop games especially (He loves D&D) , as it engages him in a way that allows him to relax and escape, allowing him to concentrate on them without considerable effort on his part.
In addition, Darcy is hyperactive and excessively restless at all times so he fidgets constantly, talks a lot (with a tendency to go off on unrelated tangents from the original conversation), has difficulty waiting or taking turns (unless he is playing a game), and exhibits extremely poor impulse control, making him prone to careless and reckless behaviour as he also has little to no concept of danger, often resulting in Darcy having frequent accidents.
He has trouble coping with stress/triggers and a low tolerance for frustration, causing frequent mood swings and short/explosive temper that can lead him into acting out, committing vandalism or theft, or being aggressive to the point that he will get himself into fights. This has meant that Darcy has had plenty of run-ins with the law throughout his childhood, though not so much as an adult as he doesn’t stray too far from home anymore.
Darcy’s ADHD has also heavily contributed to complications in his mental health, particularly anxiety and depression, as well as causing him to suffer from poor self image, episodic self harm, and suicidal ideation/attempts to take his own life (He knows he can’t actually kill himself. it’s more of an extreme form of self harm)
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Darcy is on the spectrum for Autism, though many of his more obvious traits are also heavily shared by his ADHD diagnosis, as well as his other disabilities (specifically his sensory issues, repetitive and excessive fidgeting, and difficulty with verbal expression of feelings/concepts). His traits were much more noticeable as a child and included not responding to his name, not smiling back when someone smiled at him, difficulties with understanding what others are thinking or feeling, extreme difficulty with changes to routine, difficulty making friends and delayed speech development (Darcy didn't start talking until he was 4 years old).
As an adult, Darcy still has trouble with conscious displays of empathy, social anxiety, missing/misunderstanding social cues and is still anxious of changes to routine without prior warning.
Sensory Processing Disorder
Darcy’s sensory issues are of the over-responsive type, not under-responsive, and any difficulties in attention/mental or emotional exhaustion/social interaction are a hypersensitivity issue combined with elements of his ADHD and ASD.
Sensory Modulation
Darcy has difficulty in processing too much stimuli at once (large crowds/busy noisy environments/too many instructions given at once, sudden and unexpected changes to routine), as well as sudden, unexpected and excessive triggers. As such, he may become irritable, moody, upset, aggressive, impulsive or defiant when feeling overwhelmed.
He can appear to come across as intense, demanding, hard to calm, and prone to creating situations others perceive as bad, dangerous or disruptive, usually without him realising it.
Stimming/Self-Regulation
Positive/Calming/Organising:
Headphones on (music/videos/white noise - predictable input)
Tapping/drumming/fidget toys
Weighted blanket/deep pressure stims
Deep physical contact/touch
Low ambient lighting but likes colourful/flashing lights (christmas lights, etc)
Soundproofing personal spaces
One on one interactions
Quiet places
Tactile surfaces/preferred textures
Warning before loud noises
Comfortable clothes (preferred fabrics, sleeve lengths, soft seams, labels removed)
Bed pushed close to wall
No alarm clocks
Let Darcy play with his food
Negative/Stressing/Distracting:
Too many uncontrollable noises
Too much visual input
Too much information
Busy/crowded places
Too many/conflicting textures
No light touches/tickling
Tight and unforgiving time constraints
Unspecified Autoimmune Disorder
On top of Darcy’s catalog of neurological issues, he also has an autoimmune disorder that causes him to have an extremely overactive thyroid (amongst other symptoms), though his disorder does not fall into any of the known Autoimmune disorders in that category due to the fact that he is a demon, not human, so his physiology is completely different.
As a result of this, Darcy’s metabolism is extremely sped up, meaning he burns calories at a vastly accelerated rate.
Effects Darcy’s Disorder has on his body that exacerbate/are exacerbated by his other conditions:
Insomnia
Memory Problems
Rapid and Exaggerated changes of mood
Concentration Issues
Anxiety
Panic Attacks
Hyperactivity
Fatigue
Effects Darcy’s disorder has on his body that are separate from his other conditions:
Tachycardia - His resting heart rate is constantly over 100 BPM
Fainting - Happens frequently, especially when stressed
Dizziness
Shortness of breath
Irregular heartbeat and palpitations
Elevated blood pressure
Increased risk of cardiac arrest - His heart has stopped several times before, but it restarts on its own when his healing factor kicks in
Difficulty gaining/maintaining his bodyweight no matter what/how often he eats
Near constant hunger
Stomach pains
Nausea and Frequent vomiting
Anaemia
Increased thirst
Pale skin
Muscle aches/weakness (myopathy)
Thyroid Storm - Potentially lethal in humans. Non-lethal but extremely scary, debilitating and upsetting for Darcy
Thyroid Storm - thyrotoxicosis
If Darcy forgets to take his thyroid medication for an extended period of time, comes down with an infection, is in an extreme state of emotional distress or suffers some sort of physical trauma (example; has an accident that fractures/breaks a bone), he may trigger a thyroid storm.
If that occurs, Darcy may require ICU-level medical treatment to manage his symptoms until it passes, as it features both psychiatric and physical elements, including agitation, confusion, delirium, paranoia, psychosis, a high fever above 40°C/104°F, febrile seizures, vomiting (more so than he does normally), dehydration, extreme tachycardia/arrhythmia to the point of ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest.
