I watched Akira with minimal interruptions while coming off of Low Power Mode: Stop Making Me Drive On These Fucking Highways Edition.

And uh. I’m pretty sure there’s a metaphor in there about how children are the future and how corrupt politicians and militant ways of thinking will bring society’s downfall. Also something about humanity as a whole not deserving more power than it already has bc there are too many bad people who would use it for their own gains while disregarding others’ lives (including the lives of children). And also something about how humans might be redeemable sometime in the future.

But like. Where the fuck did Kaneda keep getting the guns from.

What was the “revolution” even supposed to be? Just the one corrupt politician creating a fake anti-government movement for his own gain?

I’m sure there’s some nuance in there but I was mainly trying to figure out what the hell the plot was doing while I was watching it. And also I’m an American who’s not as well-versed in history as I should be (thanks so fucking much, Mr. Houck), so it probably has a ton to do about Japanese history.

The most memorable quotes from it are literally just characters’ names. Mainly just “TETSUOOOOO!” And the only occurrence of “Kai! Kei!” where I finally fucking learned that Red Tie dude’s name was Kai.

But holy shit was that an interesting thing to watch. Like goddamn, the way the environments and everything looked was just so... detailed, in a way.
