You startle, jumping out of your seat as the sound of Ray's door slams shut, her hurriedly throwing on her jumper as she prepares to leave. "Ray, where are you going? It's late, and we have an early schedule tomorrow," you call out, but she pays no attention. She slips on her shoes and is out the door before you can even comprehend what's happening.

"Was she... crying?" Minjung asks, her knife freezing mid-spread over her toast and it dawns on you that, indeed, tears were streaming down Ray's face.

Minutes pass, stretching into hours, and worry begins to consume your chest. It's no secret among you and your fellow members that beneath Ray's tough exterior lies a delicate soul, so the mere thought of her out there, alone and upset, drives you completely mad.

Swiftly, you retrieve your phone and dial her number just for it to go to voicemail like it did 5 minutes ago. It's clear she doesn't want any of you to find her. Determined not to give up, you decide to try your luck with the ENHYPEN members.

"Jungwon?" you hurriedly speak into the phone, relieved when it's answered. However, confusion sets in when you hear the familiar voice of, not Jungwon, but Sunghoon. “Jungwon’s busy at the moment, but I can pass on your message," he says, his tone tinged with agitation. Though curious, you choose not to question it.

"Oh, Sunghoon, it's nothing important. I just wanted to check if any of you have heard from Ray?”

"Ray? she’s not at home?"

"No, she rushed out of the apartment two hours ago, and we haven't been able to reach her. It may sound foolish, but I really just wanted to check if any of you had seen her-" The line suddenly goes dead.

“Ray’s missing?” You look up to see Aejeong step out of her room half-asleep, it seems the noise woke her up. You frantically nod, catching you by surprise when you see her smirking instead of being concern that Ray was in fact, missing.

“Jungwon won’t know where she is,” AJ starts, referring to the phone call that had just ended, “maybe you’ll have more luck with Sunghoon.” She snickers while still absentmindedly rubbing her eyes.

“-after all, they’ve been dating for awhile now.”

❥･• chapter 26 — way back home

"Lee Heeseung." He freezes in his tracks upon hearing his full name, a name that come to think about, had never left your lips before.

"Yes?" He turns around sheepishly to face you. The two of you are standing in front of his dorm, and he nervously fidgets with the number pad behind him. "You're hiding something." You squint, and Heeseung mentally curses at your keen leader instincts.

"No, I just want to show you my room!"

"What are you, twelve?"

"Don't ask so many questions." He hurriedly punches in the code to his dorm, opening the door to find the apartment completely pitch black. He gestures for you to enter first, and though suspicious, you don't refuse. "Aren't you off today? Where's the rest of your mem—"

"SURPRISE!" You jump as the lights flicker on, revealing the living room adorned with string lights and balloons spelling out "Sorry" on the wall. It takes a moment for the scene to register—the entirety of ENHYPEN is there, along with your own members, every single one of them.

You stand frozen in the doorway, speechless, as if the whole world has come to a standstill for a moment while you take in the sight before you—your members, who somehow made up while you were away, holding each other with open arms extended to you.

"My arm is starting to hurt. Are you going to bring it in or not?" Ray breaks the silence, flicking her wrist as a sign for you to quickly join in on the Lumière group hug. Just then, you feel two hands rest on your shoulders, relieving them from the tension that had built up over the past two days.

"Go on, they're waiting for you." Heeseung's gentle voice cuts through the white noise filling your ears. In an instant, tears well up in your eyes as you rush into the arms of the people you'd give everything for.

"But how did…?"

Realisation dawns on you, and you whirl around to face the culprit. "So that's why you were acting so strange! You were distracting me!" You point an accusing finger at Heeseung, who shrugs and pouts at the same time.

“I’m sorry Y/N, for being the whiny and childish bitch I am. I shouldn’t have taken out my anger on any of you like that, I hope you know I care about you too, truly.” Ray speaks out and you swear you almost burst into a fit of tears.

“Ray, you already know I’m basically immune to all the shit you say right?” You light-heartedly joke and you heave a sigh of relief when you notice Ray deflates into herself, relieved that she didn’t completely lose you. You’ve always knew that Ray has a soft spot for you and the members, she just never really knows how to express it. Realising maybe that’s why Ray finds confort in Sunghoon and vice versa. They see themselves in each other and no one can understand Ray better than the man who fought 1 vs 6 with his own members. You smile to yourself when you catch him smiling solemnly at the girl, proud of how far she’s come.

"Whose idea was this?" You point to the gigantic balloon-spelled "Sorry," and they all collectively point toward Aejeong, who scrunches her nose.

"I hate all of you."

"We love you too, AJ," Ray laughs, throwing an arm around Aejeong, who looks like she's about to cry.

"I mean it, Y/N. I am so, so sorry for what I did to you. I’m not even going to give you any excuses, I just hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me." You exchange glances with each and every one of your members, knowing deep down that no matter what happens, you’d go to hell and back with them over and over again.

"AJ, how can I forgive you when I never blamed you for anything in the first place?" You pull her into a hug, and the rest of the girls slowly join in, surrounding you with the love and affection that you had missed over the past few days.

“How did this happen?” You pull away, looking back and forth between Ray and Aejeong, their arms tightly wrapped around each other. “We kissed and made up. What about it?" Aejeong playfully pecks Ray's cheek, causing the later to pull away with a jerk.

"Ayo, back up," Sunghoon appears behind Ray, protectively pulling her away from Aejeong. His own members coo at him from the back, finding his protective gesture adorable.

The room erupts in laughter and playful banter as Sunghoon and Ray exchange teasing glances. "Oh, look who's getting all protective now," Jake teases, nudging Sunghoon's shoulder.

Sunghoon tries to maintain a serious expression but fails as a smile tugs at the corners of his lips. "Someone's got to keep this girl in line," he says, giving Ray a mock stern look.

"Hey, I can handle myself just fine," Ray retorts, but her playful tone gives away her amusement. She looks at Sunghoon with a fond smile, appreciating his protective nature.

The members continue to tease Sunghoon and Ray, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere in the room. You can't help but smile as you witness the playful interaction. Seeing your members and ENHYPEN getting along again brings you a sense of relief and happiness.

It's evident that the tension and misunderstandings have been resolved, and now the focus is on rebuilding their bond and enjoying each other's company. Amidst the chaos, you lock eyes with Heeseung who offers you a reassuring smile of his own.

Heeseung's presence in your life is a constant reminder of the importance of empathy, forgiveness, and growth. That no matter how chaotic your surroundings are, even in the middle of the most busiest street, that you’d still somehow find your way to him.

Having taught you that mistakes are opportunities for learning and that unity and understanding can mend even the deepest wounds. With Heeseung by your side, you felt supported and ready to face any challenges that lay ahead, whatever they may be…

You stand behind a van at the entrance of the park, seeking cover beneath a magnificent tree. It didn’t help much that it was still bright out and your tear-soaked mask fails to conceal your emotions, which have been pouring out ceaselessly since you excused yourself from the dorm.

Fortunately, it being a quiet Monday afternoon, there are hardly any passersby. The few exceptions, mostly older individuals taking their customary walks, do not pay you much attention.

Silently, you rock back and forth, noticing the coolness in the air and the leaves on the trees around you transitioning to hues of amber and gold, signaling the impending arrival of autumn.

You can't help but find it ironic that the person you long to see after Ray dropped such a devastating bombshell on you is him. Somewhere amidst the late-night conversations and intimate moments you shared, Heeseung became your anchor. In times of adversity, he is the one who offers solace, the same guy who held you in a headlock nearly three months ago.

"Y/N!" Your head whips toward the sound of the familiar voice, and you see Heeseung running toward you. Chuckling softly, you notice he has thrown a coat over his sleeping hoodie, his tousled bed hair still in disarray, and his shoelaces untied. "You didn't have to rush!"

"I didn't want to keep you waiting—oh my God, are you crying?" Instinctively, he cups your face, trapping you between the unassuming van and his body. As if on cue, all the emotions you have been suppressing burst forth once again, and you find yourself uncontrollably sobbing, seeking solace in his arms. Heeseung gently caresses your hair while you try to muffle your sobs against his shoulder.

"God, I hate seeing you like this," he grumbles, his breath brushing against the back of your neck, sending shivers down your spine.

"I'm sorry. Come to think of it, I always look like absolute shit whenever you see me."

"Hey, every time I lay my eyes on you is a blessing. Unless you're suggesting that I'm not only rizzless but also tasteless, I don't want to hear you say that about yourself." He huffs, and you laugh at his playful antics, grateful that they manage to lift your spirits, even if only momentarily.

"So, do you want to talk about what's troubling you?" He prompts, carefully studying your expression before delving deeper. "If it makes you feel any better, Ray seems much calmer now than when she first showed up."

"That's good.” You breathe a sigh of relief, your voice surprisingly calm. You create some distance between the two of you which leads to his hands dropping from your face to your waist, his fingers tracing gentle circles on your sides, much like the times when the two of you practiced the partner choreography together. Heeseung has always made sure you feel comfortable during rehearsals, and you've come to find solace in the little things he does for you, perhaps way too much.

You look up at him, a lone tear escaping the corner of your eye, and Heeseung swears he has never seen you so vulnerable yet so breathtakingly beautiful. It is no secret that he has an enormous crush on you, but he has never been certain if you reciprocate his feelings or if you consider him just a close friend, like you do Jungwon.

Heeseung smiles encouragingly, urging you to speak, and after deliberating for some time on how to articulate your thoughts, you finally do. "I just found out something that supposedly happened during I-LAND, and now I don't know what to do with this information."

"I know it's been ages since the show ended, and I shouldn't dwell on what happened, but I can't help but feel..." You trail off, averting your gaze while toying with the strap of his coat.

"Hurt?" Heeseung finishes your sentence, causing you to snap your eyes up to meet his. "Yeah, how did you…?"

"Ray filled me in before I left. YN, I've been where you are, more than two years ago. I know better than anyone what you're going through." It takes you a moment to grasp his meaning, and once you do, a laugh escapes your lips. "How did you manage?"

"Back then, we were all young and desperate," Heeseung begins, his fingers gently caressing your hair as he speaks, and you instinctively lean into his touch. "I believe everything happens for a reason. No matter how fucked up the situation was, it played a part in leading you here as the leader of Lumière."

"How so?"

"For instance, if you had ended up taking on the vocal representative role, you wouldn't have shown the rest of the I-landers that you in fact, don't consider yourself better than them." He squeezes your cheeks playfully, causing you to pout as memories of the incident resurface.

"Remember that conversation you had with Minjung on the balcony? You mentioned feeling pressured because of everyone's high expectations?" You nod, recalling the context of the heartfelt talk that was showcased in that episode.

"And if I know a thing or two, you were probably relieved when they took you off the role, weren't you?" He arches an eyebrow, and you mimic his expression, surprised that he read you like an open book despite not being there physically. "Honestly, yeah. But at the time, I genuinely thought it was because I wasn't good enough. For the sake of the team, I was willing to do whatever they wanted. I just didn't realize they saw me that way back then. I must have looked like a complete fool walking around like I owned the place."

"Y/N, respectfully, shut up." You stifle a laugh, and he smiles down at you. It's in that moment that you become acutely aware of how close you are to each other. A slight movement, and your lips would be pressed against his—not that you’d complain if it ever comes down to it.

"All that matters is that you proved them wrong. And if anything, I'm sure your members feel just as remorseful as Ray does, doesn’t excuse her for being a B-word towards you though.” Heeseung pouts, somehow more angrier than you who is in the unfortunate predicament in the first place. You mentally thank Heeseung for still respecting your members despite being visibly upset over it. It’s one of the traits you like about him.

“Talk to them, Y/N."

"I'm not planning to avoid it. I'm just unsure of how I should approach it," you confess, feeling deflated as thoughts of confrontation fill your mind. Yes, you may be the leader of Lumière, and may always seem like you’re calm and somehow have the answer to everything, but just like everyone else, you're human; you get lost and your feelings get hurt too.

“Come to think of it, if you knew what happened during our I-LAND, you must’ve watched the show didn’t you?” A mischievous smirk plays on your lips as you recall how Heeseung vehemently denied watching it, only remembering you from the final episode.

"Be honest, you planned this to get it out of me, didn't you?" He playfully pokes your side, causing you to cave in on yourself, laughing.

“How could I not when someone as talented as you was performing one of our songs? On top of that, it was Fever?” You know he’s playing with you but you could still feel your cheeks heating up, as you smile foolishly to yourself. You were suppose to be the one teasing him, not the other way around!

"That means you voted too?" you ask, intending to turn the table on him.

“Of course, I did.”

“For who?”

“You.” (you in fact did not turn tables 🤡)

authors note: i love how i’m going back and forth between heeyn and drama with these chapters 💀 some context for all my fellow engenes who didn’t manage to watch I-LAND (just to be clear, y’all don’t have to watch it to be engenes! in fact i recommend against watching the show, it was traumatic asf 😀). basically for their first mission, based on what i rmbr, Heeseung was originally part 1 (centre) for the signal song but a few of the ilanders didn’t really like the way he lead practises. So they, kinda conspired(?) behind his back and instigated to vote him out of the part and put Ni-ki up instead, he basically ended up in part 10 with one line in the song even though he was the most capable one there. this is not intended to throw any shade at any trainees at that time of the show (maybe seon 🫢), only for the development of the plot!! only love for all members of enha allowed <3 also heeyn situationship era is so fun to write y’all have no idea 👀

❥･• chapter 18 — the elephant in the room

You and Jungwon enter the practice room to find the rest of your members already warming up. Sensing the awkward atmosphere settling between the two groups, you exchange glances with Jungwon, knowing immediately that he feels just as worried and helpless as you do.

Maybe it's the tension or simply exhaustion from having just ended your promotions, while ENHYPEN is kickstarting theirs, but you can't shake off the feeling of unease that hung in the air.

As you observe ENHYPEN’s members stretching and going through their routine, you can't deny their talent and dedication. They're a force to be reckoned with, especially after their recent success with Bite Me. On the other hand, your group found quick success despite being relatively new, and it shows evidently that the pressure to maintain your position is starting to take its toll on your members as they stand rigidly in one corner of the room.

Amidst the silence, your eyes meet Heeseung's, and you feel a sense of comfort in the sole presence of your midnight buddy. "Good morning!" Sunoo beams as he notices you and Jungwon cautiously approaching the group.

Your leadership position shows through as your group mates sheepishly gather behind you, Mai even clinging onto your arm like a 5-year-old. You giggle, making a mental note to use this against them whenever they decide to try and overthrow you again.

"What's with the awkward glances? Weren't y'all throwing insults at each other in the group chat just last night?" Jungwon jokes and is thankfully well recieved by the members as Ray scoffs, and Jake scratches the back of his neck, joining in the laughter.

Before silence can creep back in, Son Sungdeuk, the performance director, walks in with a clipboard in hand. Memories of I-LAND flash through your mind, but you knew you weren’t alone as you notice the panic exchanged between your members and ENHYPEN.

You don't even realise when Heeseung silently slips beside you and takes hold of your hand, intertwining your fingers between your bodies, shielding it from the rest to see. You’d be lying if the action didn’t catch you by surprise, but you play it cool knowing that Heeseung himself seemed perfectly fine with it. You wonder if he is usually this touchy with the people he’s close with, and maybe that’s why it came so naturally for him.

“Did you sleep well last night?" He whispers loud enough for you to hear, and you subtly shake your head, indicating that you didn't get much sleep. He jokingly glares at you, and you playfully bump into his side when Mr Son starts talking.

"I'm going to pair you up, and we'll start learning the partner choreography-"

"Sorry, what?" Yuna voices her surprise at the news of doing partner work. "You heard him, bestie." Sunoo grumbles, clearly uncomfortable with the idea of dancing with colleagues who have established names of their own instead of professional dancers with half their faces covered.

"Did you or did you not see how fans completely butchered the poor dancers from Enhypen's recent comeback? Absolutely not.” Ray speaks her thoughts, and genuine laughter fills the room. She shyly retreats into herself as she realises everyone's attention is on her.

"As much as I hate to admit it, she's right. This is going to affect Lumière more than us," Jungwon says, reminding you that he's not just your mischievous partner-in-crime but also the dependable leader of Enhypen.

"The final decision has already been made, so there isn't much I can do. Besides, the fans have responded positively to Y/N and Jungwon's relationship. I'm sure they're eager to see more interactions," he adds only for Jungwon to clarify that your relationship is strictly platonic. Mr. Son chuckles, though still unsure about the nature of your bond with Jungwon.

Then, the names are called out and, lo and behold, you end up paired with Heeseung as the centre of the performance. The other pairings include Jay with Minjung, Sunghoon with Yoon, Ray and Jake, Jungwon and Aejeong, Yuna and Sunoo, and finally Ni-ki with Mai.

If you said the choreography was simple, you'd be lying. Maybe it was easy for Heeseung, but you find yourself struggling as dancing is surely not your strongest suit, nowhere near Mai's level of expertise at least. You remember how Jungwon had always coached you one-on-one back when you were training at SM, and that's how you initially grew close.

Lost in your thoughts, you don't realise where your mind has drifted until Heeseung gently places his palms against the small of your back, nudging you to regain your focus. "You okay, Y/N?" he asks with concern in his eyes.

"Yeah, just didn't get much rest last night. Don't worry about it," you lie, offering him a tight smile and even though Heeseung suspects something else is bothering you, he didn’t push you for it.

Meanwhile, you observe how everyone else seems to be warming up to their partners effortlessly, fitting together like pieces of a puzzle. As you watch the other members flawlessly execute their moves, a pang of insecurity washes over you and you can't help but feel like the odd one out, struggling to keep up with the rest of the group.

Just as you're about to let self-doubt consume you, Heeseung surprises you. He gently squeezes your waist, rubbing small circles on the side of your ribs as a subtle gesture of support and reassurance. You look up to see genuine concern shining through his eyes, and it’s in that moment you know Heeseung truly cares about you and your struggles.

It is also in that moment, as Heeseung’s palm rest against your waist that you realise how fast your heart is racing. It's unclear whether it's due to the physical exertion from dancing or the growing awareness of his touch. The combination of the adrenaline coursing through your veins and the warmth of his hand sends a wave of electrifying sensations through your body.

You can't help but wonder if he feels the same connection, the same pulsating energy between you. It's a fleeting thought that lingers in your mind, adding another layer of complexity to your already swirling emotions.
