14 Principles to Develop Scalable Systems for the Internet

Hello! Have you ever wanted to "level up" in technology? Do you want to know how to solve problems at Planet-scale? Do you want to learn the "secret sauce" to develop a truly mature system that can power the crazy next big thing(tm) that you want to get on the Internet?

Well, enter the field of System Scalability, a field that I'm more than glad to talk about and share intricacies of with you.

I learned Scalability, so you don't have to :)

Scalability is the general idea that refers to whether systems, processes, tools, etc... whatever "artifact" you need to use, accomodate for bigger sizes of input. For example, it is certainly agreed upon that a scalpel is a fantastic tool to make precision cuts, but it doesn't scale to cutting down trees. This is what I mean by scalability.

Do you want to make a team of engineers go nuts? Get them in a meeting room, and ask them: "does your system scale?", which is commonly a valid question, and they will start debating nonstop that very moment, like mad.

But I digress.

If your web application or system works fine when you're serving 10 people, but it breaks when 1000 or 10,000 people try to use it at the same time, then you have poor scalability. And on the contrary, if you're a badass of engineering and you make it so your system is ultra-capable to handle massive amounts of traffic, like what people would do for massive, always-on commercial sites, then you have great scalability. Capice?.

A lot is said about scalability in tech these days, with fair reason, given how so much of what happens in society these days is so intrinsically connected to the Internet now. Developing a system which scales massively is of the essence.

Technologists: we need you. We need more people to come into the field. Are you up to it?

The following is a compendium of "rules of thumb" that you can use to architect your systems in a more scalable, robust, resilient, and fault-resistant way.

This is not an authoritative, end-all be-all list of principles for scalability: scalability is a never-ending discussion that will apply to your particular app in a different way. But at least, I'm proud to say that all of this comes from experience and war wounds, and that it's stuff that I've relied on for the past several years in my day to day.

Let's begin!

1. Know your scalabilities

There's two kinds of scalability, vertical and horizontal. Both refer to the same central concept but they go about it in different ways:

Vertical Scalability

Vertical scalability means that you achieve greater levels of scalability by "beefing up" whatever infrastructure you're running your system on.

Can you add more storage, a faster CPU, more primary memory? Does your system accomodate for scale better this way?

Bear in mind that vertical scalability is not always viable. Sure, you may be able to to add a faster CPU to your web server to alleviate your problems, or more RAM, or more Hard Disk space, but should you?. Can you afford to take your site down to change its components? You probably can't. Is throwing more money, in the sense of getting better components for your web server, really the answer? Not always.

Besides, tracking back to the previous example about CPU speed, you can only get so fast. Moore's law is a thing for a reason. Know the limits involved in vertical scalability.

So, in some cases you will be better served by horizontal scalability. Distribute things!!!

Horizontal Scalability

Horizontal scalability means that you accomodate for scale by running computing tasks across several multiple machines interconnected through the network.

Horizontal scalability is what everybody does in the industry now to get systems off the ground, and the main driving force behind the Cloud.

Horizontal scalability will usually involve the implementation of a message broker/message bus, and a load-balancing mechanism to coordinate and even out the load across multiple hosts. Many different implementations of this exist out there on the market, with many different algorithms but as long as the main principles remain, where you take your workloads and spread them out across several hosts, you will be fine.

2. Use the right algorithms, and know your complexities

Big-O analysis is a really intricate field in Computer Science concerned with determining how your system's Memory or Computing Time requirements scale depending on the size of your input. This is intrinsically related to the idea of Scalability.

Big-O analysis thus represents the CPU time and memory requirements of a system as a mathematical function of the size of the input, and if you harken back a bit to your high-school algebra, you'll remember how different mathematical functions can be graphed:

Not all computer algorithms are made equal: different approaches have different complexities. There are many ways to get to Rome, of course: you can certainly solve a computing problem many different ways, but is your solution efficient for massive inputs? Does the time or memory needed to run your function upshoot to infinite if your input shoots up to infinite? Can you be asymptotically bounded? Can you trade-off time for memory or vice-versa? These and many more are questions that you have to answer if you want your system to be scalable.

So, preferably, avoid coding your systems with algorithms which run in exponential or worse computing time. Prefer logarithmic or constant time.

3. Use the right data structures

Data structures are also very important when designing systems. Different data structures have different requirements in terms of time and memory for certain applications. Modeling your data with a certain data structure can make or break your scalability, so you really need to research and take all considerations into account when designing systems.

This point is very intimately related to the previous point.

As a rule of thumb here I recommend to aggresively use hashmaps whenever possible since it DOES help a lot. Hashmaps are a kickass data structure that flattens out runtime complexity to access a certain piece of information in a logical mapping of a set of information through the usage of a key which maps to the location of the information in memory. Most information in Existence can be modelled with hashmaps. With certain caveats, hashmaps can be arbitrarily large and allow to access a piece of information of any type in a computer system in constant time.

4. Know your concurrency

By nature, some computing problems lend themselves to being approached from a concurrent point of view, which we can call "embarassingly concurrent problems". If your problem can be solved faster through implementation of multiple threads of processing, take this avenue. But be aware that concurrency also brings its own share of problems, particularly in terms of whether you have multiple threads acting on shared mutable state, or any other side effects that a given thread may have (which as a general rule of thumb you should avoid as much as possible if you're sticking to functional programming form). Use this resource wisely: concurrency should not be applied to everything just because.

Some programming languages attempt to make concurrency easier by treating it as more of a first-class citizen, pairing it together with mechanisms that avoid shared mutable state among other niceties. Most, if not all, commercial Functional Programming languages fall here, so Scala, Clojure and Elixir, for example, are worth a look. The promise/callback model seen in all ECMA/Javascript implementations, and the Future model, which is available in pretty much every programming language these days, are also very cool, since they abstract away a lot of the nitty gritty of concurrency so you don't have to.

Follow the Reactive school of thought when architecting your systems. Bear in mind that distributed systems can have faulty network conditions, among a plethora of factors which can make intercommunication between systems or components very spotty. The Reactive pattern will be of great usage to avoid headaches down the line here, and I recommend getting familiar with the Reactive manifesto for context too: https://www.reactivemanifesto.org/

Again, it makes sense to apply concurrency to solve a given problem when you would rather not block the current thread. For example, if your system has an expensive database transaction, or a some kind of notification or email sending, you should run it concurrently and not make the current thread remain blocked during the expensive task. Which leads me to the next point:

5. Use the Pub/Sub pattern

A rule of thumb about highly scalable systems is that your system should run tasks based on message passing, placing messages into a message queue where other components of your system read from at their leisure. If you leverage the publisher/subscriber pattern for this, you've won half the battle. Tasks such as the expensive examples mentioned above, like notification sending or email sending, lend themselves well for Publisher/Subscriber.

There's a lot of ridiculously simple alternatives in the market here to implement the Pub/Sub pattern for your systems, particularly managed systems. A common one which you probably already know about is AWS SNS and SQS, both of which work in tandem beautifully out of the box to enable publisher/subscriber patterns. Leverage this as much as possible.

But SNS and SQS are not the only versions of this available out there. Some very popular alternatives are Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ and Google Cloud Pub/Sub.

6. IO is expensive so avoid it if possible

Writing or reading information to or from disk is expensive because there's way too many moving pieces involved in it. If possible, avoid reading or writing to disk. Go stateless. This includes file operations, database transactions, and anything of the sort. Every read or write involves a round trip, over the network and/or to disk, which is usually not too bad but can be cumbersome if dealing with tons of load. Minimize how many times your system has to make this round trip.

Of course you will need to store information about your users at a certain point though, so IO is in a way, unavoidable. If possible, leverage a managed service so you offload IO. Not to mention that data lifecycle management can be quite the pain! Lots of managed services solve the problem of lifecycle management so you don't have to.

7. Denormalize and cache if memory is cheap

However, do not consider IO to be the devil! Cache information that's not volatile aggresively if this saves you round trips to the database or disk!. In relational database terms, even though you're not completely being ACID, having duplicate/de-normalized information in a database helps if it means, for example, avoiding a database join or some other kind of database operation.

Cache management, again, also comes with its own share of Pains in the A, but if you're dealing with information that's not sensitive, I reccomend it.

8. Loose Coupling is awesome

Design all of your systems so their components are not tightly bound and can be swapped out easily and cleanly, if desired. By tightly bound, what I mean is whether your system's components depend directly on the implementation of each other rather than on a cleanly abstracted interface. Good programming practice and modular design is of the essence here: Always code to the Interface and prefer Composition over Inheritance. Use shared executables and libraries. If one of these components is a bottleneck (spoilers: this will happen, whether you want it or not) and you eventually find a better one, make it easy for you to make the switch.

9. Can you containerize?

Last decade, the tech world bore witness to the rise of a huge amount of virtualization technologies that made computing a truly elastic/on-demand resource to consume. Among them, a personal favorite of mine and one that is making a big splash is the use of lightweight virtualization, aka "containers"/jails.

Many operating systems available in the market have their own version of containerization implemented in their kernel; however, Debian and RHEL-like linuxes have dominated the field for the past several years.

It is possible to set up containers to spawn or die out depending on the amount of traffic that your system is receiving in a very sophisticated way. Learn the intricacies of these kinds of implementations and leverage them.

10. Can you go serverless?

Containerization capabilities like the ones I mentioned before have allowed new services and abstractions to come up in the market to make your life easier as a developer. One of them of particular importance is the rise of "functions-as-a-service", which provide a way to run application code without having to maintain an application server running.

The nice thing about the functions-as-a-service paradigm is that it removes tons of moving pieces from the whole equation and by nature scales with your traffic, but this is pretty bleeding edge territory and it doesn't necessarily fit everybody's use cases. Be careful if you decide to go this way.

11. Split functionalities between microservices

Service-driven architecture has a wide variety of tenets, among which I should highlight the Microservice orientation.

In my opinon, unless you're a humongous enterprise that needs to deploy systems for world-scale, you usually don't need microservices and you will be better served by a well-written, clean monolith. But we want to learn about world-scale, right? That's why you came here in the first place ;)

Think about the workloads that you're running in your system. If you expose an API, are some of your endpoints receiving substantially more traffic than others?

You may want to abstract the code that serves such endpoints onto a new microservice of its own, and apply all of the scalability principles discussed above to it. A very common use case is authentication and authorization. Do you need to implement a system of its own for authentication because you could use horizontal scaling to make it work better with traffic spikes? Maybe your system needs a search engine for some reason, can you implement the search engine as a separated system and scale it up?

There's a lot of nuance and a lot of give and take in this regard, so exercise caution. Again, not everybody should do microservices, but a lot of times, it truly is the answer to a lot of issues when you're trying to scale your system up.

12. Regionalize, failover and implement redundancy.

The Cloud has made a made a massive amount of computing resources available to engineers worldwide at the push of a button. Getting a cheap and fast web server wherever in the world is as simple as an API call, with a lot of guarantees behind it about geographic location and avialability.

So, be liberal with your compute. Deploy your application with redundancy. Have as much capacity running your application as possible and load-balance and failover as needed. This adds resillience to your systems, and makes them more reliable. Remember that this is a part of scalability, what happens if you lose your system in a certain location? Have you prepared for that?

I reccomend an approach, as in, run your application in at least three different geographical regions, in at least two availability zones per region. Availability zones are concepts specific to the Cloud, which are datacenters that are logically isolated so if one goes down, all others in the region never go down.

And in the very rare case that all availability zones go down at the same time, which is already statistically unlikely to begin with, then running your application in another region will come in handy. There's failover mechanisms to set up your clients such that they can use an auxiliary region in case that the server they're trying to consume from goes down.

If your application is globally consumed, deploy to all possible regions as you can in the Cloud such that your customers can reach the closest datacenter possible. Don't run all of your system in a couple sole regions.

Also run your system on-premise alongside the cloud for added redundancy if this is a possibility. Sometimes... going back to basics is good :)

13. What you don't measure you can't improve: Observability is King

You should be smart about what's happening with your system. What if a part of your system is terribly slow but you're not tracing it? How can you know exactly what to improve for better scale, if you don't even have any data to begin with?.

Define KPIs as needed for your system and implement monitoring solutions to track them over time. One that is very popular and that fits very well with the AWS ecosystem is AWS Cloudwatch, which has a lot of pre-baked metrics for its native systems that you can use to inspect how your system runs.

You probably also want to trace the lifetime of a request of one of your customers to know what happens to them as you go along. Implement tracing with tools such as Envoy, which is very popular in the tech world at large, and learn to use them to your advantage for this.

14. And finally... can you not develop a system to begin with? :)

And... I'd like to conclude this article with a little bit of wisdom.

When you start in the field you're usually very excited about developing your own systems. You love programming, you love coding and testing and all of that good stuff, and you love to see your customers enjoy using your system. Life is good.

Imagine that you have a new stakeholder with a certain need and you have to satisfy it. For the sake of an example, let's say that your customer is a merchant, who wants to sell their wares to a wide variety of customers. They handle production and distribution, you just need to handle the information worldwide.

Then you start developing a web application. You already have ideas in your mind about what to develop the very moment you learned about your client. You love jumping in with other developers and discussing programming paradigms and design patterns. You bring out the newest thingamajig in the industry and you use the newest, flashiest, most cutting edge programming languages. You keep going down the rabbit hole, more and more and more. You rack up your cloud bill, and then some, and then some, and then some...

You love to produce a lot of code, fast, because you're a good developer and you're smart and you love your craft. You love to, figuratively, watch your system stand and you hit it with a loud thud and, since it's enterprisey and highly scalable and all, it makes big, bad ass loud clanks every time you do so. You are proud of yourself. You puff up your chest and you pat your colleagues in the back. Life is good.

Eventually, your system has so many little crevices and so much complexity that it becomes a burden to deal with. You need staff to maintain it. You need staff to keep it running. Things constantly break down and it becomes a whole bunch of upkeep. The customer wants changes because... well, the customer will always need changes, and making changes is a pain. Or maybe you didn't understand the specifications to begin with and your customer is making do. Or maybe you made things "your way" and it's not the way that the customer wanted things done. It's a problem of misconception now.

Then some members of your team start re-designing and re-architecting and re-factoring your system, and now you're stuck in this hellish thing that you didn't mean to get stuck in.

Remember: you were only trying to satisfy a stakeholder's needs. You were only solving a problem.

...

And what about this: what if, all along, your customer sold, let's say, tacos? What if you just set up a shopify account for them instead of baking your own system, for example? What if they didn't need software to begin with, they may just need a Google Docs file and a Simple Static Website?

What if that gave them what they needed rather than what you wanted to do, to begin with?

...

Very broad example, I know, but I think it still conveys the point: avoid falling into the trap of doing tech for the sake of doing tech. Be clever. Be critical. Solve problems rather than coding software to fill the hours in your day. Understand people, understand the customers that you work for, and understand what really is needed in your industry. You'll be amazed at how simply some problems can be solved.

My fiance has a visible tumor (it's visible--it was benign and removed before but came back). He lost his health insurance a couple years ago, and he seems to only be progressively be getting sicker (we don't know if it's because it's a cancerous tumor or his stress levels are insanely high). Either way, he obviously needs to see a doctor--but we have no insurance and we don't make enough to afford insurance (we might make little enough to qualify for medicaid--for this question, assume we do). My question is, what options does he have? We can't afford treatment. He doesn't want to go to a doctor w/o insurance because they won't help him since he can't pay and he will lose the job he has and what little he does make. Please, are there special programs? I know his condition does not qualify for the fast SSI claims as I looked into that already. Would medicaid be enough? Are there special cancer programs? Is there anything? 6'1 , 25 y/o male, spent the majority of the past 4 years dropping from 430lbs to a current 198lbs. The weight loss has left me with large amounts of sagging skin on my inner thighs, pelvis, abdomen, chest and upper arms. All of these areas are covered in large amounts of stretch marks as well, which leads me to believe these areas will never recover without surgery. Now my chest and arms are not nearly as big of an issue as working out at the gym has started to fill these areas in with muscle, but no amount of situps are tightening the skin around my abdomen, and no amount of leg exercises are firming up my inner thighs. Cardio actually seeems to make the issue worse as I lose even more weight. I've also begun to notice that the more the skin sags around my torso, the more my lower back hurts. REVIEW: The Technomancer

When I first started playing The Technomancer, I was struck by how it reminded me of other literature, movies and games that I had already experienced before. Weaving in and out of the fast-paced combat like I did with Geralt in The Witcher 3, navigating through menus and searching for loot similar to BioWare gems Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Mass Effect, and exploring the sands of Mars in a complex world evocative of Frank Herbert’s Dune all brought back good memories. The Technomancer manages to echo each of these masterpieces while also creating its own unique atmosphere and setting. Although plenty of quirks and a few pacing issues make it less than perfect, The Technomancer is a great old-school role-playing game that any fan of the genre will enjoy immensely.

You play as Zachariah Mancer, a young man who at the start of the game is undergoing the final steps of a rite of passage which will allow him to become a true brother of the Technomancers, pious and wise warriors with cybernetic implants that grant them electrical powers. Your final test sees you learning the secret origin story of the Technomancers along with their aspiration for the future, which will set in motion an adventure throughout all of Mars itself.

The story begins quite complex as you’re almost instantly thrown into a world full of tense situations between two governments fighting over water, the scarcest resource on the planet, rogue gangs searching for power by means of intimidation and coercion, mutants terribly altered by the effects of the sun and hated by ordinary humans, plenty of alien creatures, and of course, the Technomancers. The lack of in-depth exposition at the beginning of the campaign makes it hard to follow along with everyone’s motives at first, especially when the game claims that a karma system is constantly affecting your relations with each of these groups, but things become more clear, even fascinating, after a few hours playing. I enjoyed the story almost the entire time, and felt that it only truly faltered towards the middle of the game when I was forced to spend several hours running errands for an uninteresting ruler of a foreign city for no particular reason or purpose.

Although the cutscenes suffer from some lighting errors and dreadful lip syncing, they occur rarely, and are not that important to a game like The Technomancer anyway. I never observed any performance issues outside of the cutscenes, and the writing, voice acting, and environments are great throughout.

The game is not technically open-world, but rather takes place in several different hub areas across Mars. You gain access to more regions as you progress in the story and are eventually able to fast travel between some of them, but still need to trek across massive amounts of space often. One of my favorite games, Knights of the Old Republic, takes you from location to location in a linear pattern; after completing the missions on one planet it was likely that you would never return there. In The Technomancer however, it is essential to backtrack to locations that you’ve already visited over and over again in order to complete side missions and main missions, especially during the middle portion of the game. This takes away from a lot of the fun and is far more tedious errand-work than I’ve experienced in other role-playing titles. Furthermore, enemies constantly respawn in these places and cannot be avoided, so you may find yourself anxiously dreading combat encounters while already spending unnecessary amounts of time running through the multiple hubs just to reach an objective marker at a final destination. After that, guess what? You’ve got to fight your way out all over again.

Yet this isn’t at all to say that I didn’t enjoy exploration in The Technomancer. Although travelling is monotonous, observation is engaging. Every hub area is distinct. The underground city Opis is dank and ominous, with tension between soldiers and gangs always present and a steady, electric soundtrack keeping things suspenseful. Other regions are extremely colorful, with beautiful lighting and contrasting styles of electronic music creating an entirely new sense of wonder. I enjoyed taking in each of these atmospheres and going out hunting for crates of gear or side missions the first three or four times through, just not when I was forced to return more times than is reasonable. It’s silly that you cannot set custom waypoints, but holding the right trigger brings up a slightly opaque thumbnail of the map, which I found handy as I traversed the environment.

Combat may seem unfair at the start of the game, (I had to play the first few hours on easy difficulty before ramping up to normal) but once you get used to the controls and learn the techniques required for success, it becomes enjoyable. By holding the right bumper and pressing X, Y or B while fighting, you switch between three stances: warrior, rogue, and guardian. Warrior wields a staff and is focused on strong area attacks, rogue uses a gun and dagger and is based on agility and critical hit damage, and guardian has you flourishing a mace and shield and is centered on health and defense.

Most games would force you to pick a single playstyle at the start of the game, but Technomancer encourages you to switch between all three styles mid-fight, although it does take some practice remembering which keys bind to which stances and what situations are best-suited to each. In addition to physical fighting you can also employ your Technomancer powers at any time, shooting enemies with beams of electricity or stunning them with high-powered punches packed with voltage, just to name a couple options.

All four methods of combat have their own intricate skill trees, and while it takes ages to max out multiple trees, it is doable. Every three levels you get access to additional traits as well which affect your physical and intellectual capabilities. These grant you passive bonuses such as the ability to craft more complex upgrades for your weapons or to convince computer-controlled companions to follow your commands.

Combat itself is most unique because of the disruption mechanic. Weapons and skills have various stats associated with them: increase damage, critical hit chance, chance to poison and more, one of which includes the chance to disrupt enemy attacks. Since there isn’t a symbol to point out that an enemy is about to strike and should be avoided like in, say, the Batman: Arkham games, it’s up to you to watch each of your enemies’ movements and to time your attacks proficiently. If you manage to disrupt an enemy, knocking them off balance or stunning them, you’ll have a major advantage and will be able to inflict loads of damage in the short seconds before they comes back to their senses.

Sometimes the game will go into slow-motion for a split-second as you or an enemy begins to carry out an attack. During this short time period you have the option to either continue with your current plan or to execute a different tactic entirely. Not only does this feature allow for last-minute changes to your battle strategy, but it also looks neat visually, and the animation is so brief that it never slows down the pace of the brawl.

You come across plenty of different companions during your adventure in The Technomancer, each of whom assists in battle and offers insight and advice about the world, including judging the morality of your actions. You share equipment with companions, so it’s important to manage your inventory rationally in order to make sure everyone has optimal gear. I enjoyed the company of my allies and the ability to switch between any two of them for slightly varied fights and passive boosts.

Unfortunately, I ran into several issues that should not be present in any game. For example, I once asked a character if he had ever been to a location called [i]“The Underworks”[/i] before as we stood directly inside of it. He replied in past tense, describing in great detail the time when he had been to The Underworks long ago and what it looked like. It was an odd conversation that clearly wasn’t thought out very well and that I didn’t expect to come across in an otherwise cohesively written game. While experiences similar to this one are not common throughout the game, they are present in several places.

Another problem is embedded in the karma system, which affects how your companions and other characters respond to your actions throughout the world. Although I appreciate the changes in dialogue proportional to your endeavors both good and bad, I never felt like my actions had a major impact on the world as a whole, and if they did, the game didn’t do a good job of illustrating that. I found myself questioning the purpose of the karma system often and wondering whether it was a necessary addition. Sometimes it isn’t even logical. At one point I lied to a character, telling him that I had successfully completed a task he had previously assigned me. My lie seemed to go off unnoticed; I was applauded for a job well done. Nevertheless, a notification warned me that my relationship with said character had declined a significant amount. So which was it? Did he actually appreciate what I had done? Did he know that I abandoned his orders yet pretended otherwise? Occasions like this aren’t immersive, but plain frustrating. I want to know why my decisions matter and what incidents they lead to. The karma system doesn’t appear to be central to The Technomancer, but it’s hinted at enough that I think it could have been improved upon much more.

Summary

The Technomancer is a very solid game that seems to be almost a mixture of an old-school role-playing title and a modern third-person action game. It features classic customization options through skill trees that affect how you play, companions with genuine personalities, and a good main plot overall. However, it also remembers to implement complex and rewarding combat mechanics that encourage multiple different playstyles of fast-paced fighting. Although peculiar nuisances like the faulty karma system are irritating and bigger issues like the suddenly-sluggish experience halfway through the game make it less than perfect, there’s plenty of satisfaction in this title. While the “cause and effect” mechanics may not be as fleshed out as in modern titles like The Witcher 3, The Technomancer blends enough new qualities with vintage attributes in order to create an authentic world and a whole bunch of electric fun.

Why Values Are Important in Business

You may think that business and values do not have much in common. Perhaps business seems directly functional, while values seem to have to do with personal perspectives and cultural background. However, values are incredibly important to how businesses operate with their partners and their clients – whether the outfit is an auto mechanic in Boulder or any business.

Why is it important for a business to have values?

Ethics is not just important to the consumer or to affiliates of an organization but to an organization itself. In fact, W. Michael Hoffman has pointed out in risk assessment publication Corporate Compliance Insights that lack of values actually increases the risk of a firm. Here are a few key reasons why business management should be values-driven:

Pressures of the market – When you have to find ways to cut costs, you may not have as many checks and balances in place to maintain proper behavior. Employees might have their own ability to act one way or another, leading to possible ethical violations.

Diversity – In the United States, there are people interacting with different genders, religions, and ages. This diversity leads to different perceptions of what it means to act professionally within a business. While there must be commonly understood codes of conduct, the way that a person comprehends the exact same scenario and information can be very different from another person’s based on their demographic characteristics.

Globalization – People from various cultural backgrounds will not all experience different situations and circumstances the same. In certain cases, ethics becomes confusing related to the issue of culture, in which case the issue is sometimes considered a cultural sensitivity rather than a simple ethical precept.

Remote workers – Since so many people are working from a distant location part or all of the time, it is important to have values that infuse the organization at the management level.

Business partnerships – Your alliances with other businesses are another area in which ethical errors might occur. Values-driven tactics are effective not just at defining the ways that interactions occur internally but with external partners as well.

Team structure – There is more of a communal, integrated, team-based notion of internal growth in business today, with merit and individual aptitude leading the way to decision-making. Removing the top-down nature in which decisions have traditionally been generated has allowed all players to feel part of the process.

Entrepreneurship & intrapreneurship – Often now, companies are advocating that members of their staff, even at the entry level, become more innovative, try tactics (within structured confines) that embrace risk, and even get to use some funding. This method, called intrapreneurship, gives anyone working at a business a chance to feel like they are the owner and assume the relevant responsibilities.

Key values within a business setting

The above elements of business tell us reasons that values are important to business. However, what exactly are we talking about? What are the most common business values?

Here are some of the top values that are used by the world’s best businesses, according to responses to a questionnaire conducted by the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Alumni of the Stanford business school were asked to list the values that were most critical within a business setting. Here are a few key values, along with the comments that were made by those who responded.

Golden rule treatment – Wealthfront CEO Andy Rachleff noted that he thinks the golden rule is a fundamental precept of a solid business interaction. When a person approaches others with respect and with a goal of making a strong impression in a business setting, typically the favor will be returned. You will not only gain credibility but will also have greater peace-of-mind. You can put yourself at risk by acting in a manner that assumes mutual concern; however, even if you do get hurt occasionally with this strategy, you can simply discontinue your engagement with anyone who does not treat you in kind.

Integrity – Approaching your communications with all parties from a perspective of consistency and authenticity will point you in the right direction, according to Pagatech cofounder Jay Alabraba. Taking this honest approach will mean that you are not deceiving anyone or scamming them. In other words, you want to transparently convey what you are offering to everyone, regardless whether it hurts your immediate profits. University Games CEO Bob Moog also mentioned this value as a high-priority one in a business setting, noting that he had many handshake deals with other businesspeople, resulting in beneficial relationships that had lasted decades.

Straightforwardness – People often want to see a person who is going to talk with them directly and straightforwardly, advised Thought Leadership Lab CEO Denise Brosseau. Often people will want to work with startups or other organizations outside of Wall Street since smaller and less traditional companies can often have a greater degree of directness. This direct dynamic is aligned well with entrepreneurialism and the notion of getting to hand-select the partners through which one conducts business, said Brosseau. In that capacity, a company is able to not only offer straightforwardness itself but be able to filter for that quality in its clientele.

Mutuality – Tiny Prints co-founder Laura Ching noted that trust is built into a company that creates a familial, open-communication environment. When firms look for new employees, they can specifically have a desire to hire people who care about the strength of their bonds with others. The culture of an organization can also further enforce and enhance the notion that interconnection is critical to the mission of the company. People should be able to get courtesy from one another, but also friendliness. In that type of setting, people will feel comfortable to get even better at interacting with their peers. Loyalty and retention can both be high with employees and, in turn, with customers; after all, your clients become attached to certain members of your staff. When there is an implicit sense of honesty and having one another’s best interests at heart, you are able to acquire feedback that would otherwise be challenging to attain.

Transparent messaging – When a company has many different projects occurring at the same time, conducted by a broad array of players, there can be a huge range in the perspectives – leading, potentially, to communication difficulties between different projects that are ultimately interrelated. Empowered Careers CEO Steve Poizner commented that executives at companies should promote a business culture for which truth is critical to all interactions, regardless of all other factors. Additionally, said Poizner, being strong and unafraid allows someone to make the kind of impact they want with their customers and in their community.

Gratitude – We all want to be appreciated by businesses when we give them our money and invest in a relationship with them. As indicated by Ariat International CEO Beth Cross, organizations should remember that their clients care to know that they are appreciated.

Simple value – You can find out what the client needs in various ways, as noted by Design Within Reach founder Rob Forbes. Whether you use market research or simply release your offering to the market, you would be wise to think in terms of what the customer would actually value. By creating products that are high-quality and then communicating their story to your customer, you are able to give something to others through a business context that is authentic and can improve their quality of life.

Passion – Passion is another of those terms that may seem to be antithetical to the dry and serious needs of business. However, you really do want to care about what you do for a living – and be able to say the same about the people from whom you buy your goods and services.

*Foucault: Rhetoric as Power*

In this entry, I will examine the critical question, What is an example of a discursive formation and its elements? How does this discursive formation evoke a certain sense of power, and how is this power productive and/or unproductive?

To investigate these questions I will be focusing on the dining hall at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois as my rhetorical artifact. The dining hall is the main spot on campus for students to get breakfast, lunch and dinner, and every day, hundreds of students file in to get their meals. With the discursive formation in mind, I will explain how specific details about the dining hall fit under each of Focault’s 5 units of the formation.

The dining hall is located inside of the Gerber Center, which is located in the center of campus. It caters to the different needs of students, whether it be allergies, or if they have decided to abstain from certain foods for personal reasons. As stated above, this is where a majority of students get their meals everyday.

In Foss’s essay about Foucault’s discussion about discursive formation, Foss chose to apply Foucault’s five units and relate it back to Disneyland. However, in this essay, these five units will be applied to the dining hall. The five units of discursive formation are: discursive practices, rules, roles, power, and knowledge.

Discursive practices:

Discursive practice is defined as, “concerned with discourse that, because it follows particular rules or has passed the appropriate tests, is understood to be true in a culture,” (Foss 1987). One example that comes to mind right away is the amount and type of food offered. Augustana’s dining hall offers many varieties of foods from burgers and fries to sweet and sour chicken. The dining hall also caters to all types of people, whether they don’t eat meat because they are vegetarian or vegan, or if their religion only allows certain types of food. Another example that is prevalent in the dining hall is the use of space throughout. The dining hall here is bigger than many other campuses this size or smaller. The dining hall has two different areas where you can sit. One is open and can be seen by anyone walking past, but the other place is tucked farther away, and you can only see it if you walk back towards that area. There is plenty of seating for every student, which leads me another point, who sits where. Usually, most students “claim” their specific area and sit there for the entire term or for the year. One example of this is the Cross Country and Track and Field teams tend to sit in one area specifically lined up against a main wall. With the space and choices students make, whether it be food or seats, it never truly feels packed. Such as how Foss discusses how Disneyland has architectural and spatial mechanisms that regulate the flow of people. With the design of the dining hall, one area never really feels packed because of how everything is arranged in order to make it flow.

Rules and Roles:

Rules, according to Foucault, are procedures or principles that govern the discursive formation and in turn, the formation assumes its particular character due to these rules. When it comes to rules in the dining hall, there is no set sign that states what you can and cannot due. One of the rules that you learn, typically when you are a visiting high school student, is when you are finished with your meal, you take your dishes over to a conveyor belt that leads to the dishwashers, and you place your silverware in a specific bin in that same area. Some common sense rules, that everyone should hopefully have by now, are rules such as don’t cut in line, don’t leave a mess, and the major one is don’t take something that isn’t yours. There have been many cases of students taking plates and cups out of the dining hall as if nothing is wrong with that. Now, onto roles. Roles, according to Foucault, we play roles in the narrative of everyday life. We are given a job and a function to do whether it be at work or just in everyday life. Roles in the dining hall include who works at what specific food station. For example, my friend Alyssa only works at the vegetarian station and nowhere else in the dining hall. Roles can be differentiated by the color shirt the workers wear. Usually the adults working wear a navy blue shirt, the student workers wear a purple shirt, and the managers every year choose a different color shirt to differentiate. The worker's role is to stand behind the stations and serve the food. The students role is to walk up and ask politely for food, not to be standing behind the station with the workers. This could also be tied to rules as well, because it is a rule that students are not allowed to enter the stations, unless they work in the dining hall. These roles we get and the workers get are because we have been put into them by society and the college community. The dining hall has things to be done, and the people are at the mercy of this function.

Knowledge and Power

Knowledge is whatever truth is considered in the discursive formation. The main truth that I believe the dining hall upholds is that it is clean, a good environment, and is serving fresh food for all the students to enjoy. Students understand everyone’s roles in the dining hall, and they follow the etiquette that has been set by students before. Another example of knowledge, which can potentially be tied back to power and rules, is how it is seen as strange and not normal to go up and sit with people you don’t know. It is strange when you do this because it doesn’t follow the informal “rules” college students have set. Sitting with people you don’t know could actually end up being productive. You could make a new friend and gain new perspectives from just having a conversation with someone new. Power as defined by Focualt is, “the overall system, process, or network of force relations spread through the entire discursive formation,” (Foss 1987). Focault choses to focus on the term “disciplinary power”, and this operates through conformity to norms or standards for correct behavior. When it comes to power in the dining hall, it is possible that if a student is acting up and causing trouble, the person in charge of the hall can throw them out. They also may contact college administration, since they have more power in what will happen to the student punishment wise. Another power structure that is set up and it can also be tied to rules. The power structure that is set is that there are rules made by administration, but there are also rules informally set by students. Administration has power over all of the students, as well as the workers. The students rules however, are ones that I guess you could say are “passed down” and “accepted” as soon as you come to college. Examples of informal rules is that you are polite to the staff, and also touching on the fact that you can’t really sit with people you don’t know, you are restricted to your friend group only. This gives the students power to decide what is seen as what is right and wrong in the dining hall, whether it be how you act, or who you sit with. But this power can be turned around, and students can go against this power by sitting with those they don’t know.

This type of discursive formation evokes a sense of power for those who are in charge of the dining hall as well as the college. The adult workers in the dining hall have more authority over the student workers, therefore, they are able to tell the workers what they can and cannot do. The college administration has the overlying control of the dining hall. If ever an issue arose, the administration would be contacted immediately and take over control. From there, they would decide on what action needs to be taken depending on the issue and its severity. This power is productive because it makes sure that both the students entering the dining hall and the students follow the rules and don’t cause trouble. With the administration’s power, students are very leery of causing trouble in the dining hall. With the student workers, the same rules apply, but also their superiors also help play a role in keeping everything going smoothly. This also could be unproductive because everyone still follows that informal rule of don’t sit with people you don’t know. This power that the students have to decide who they want to sit with has been taken away by this informal rule “set” in place by students before them. This rule keeps students from getting out of their comfort zone, breaking this norm, and sitting with someone new. Thus in turn, being an unproductive use of a student’s own individual power.

Radford (2001) further expands on Foucault’s definition, “In Foucault's use of the term, discursive formations are real, just like the arrangement of books on a library shelf or the sentences in this article you are reading right now. Discursive formations are entities to be seen, touched, and experienced because the objects that make them up, such as books, are material objects. It follows, then, that because discursive formations are material, they have material effects,” (Radford 2001). The dining hall is an example of discursive formation for the reasons above, as well as how it is something that can be seen, touched, and experienced. What happens in the dining hall affects every student, whether it be piling their plate with food, or meeting someone new by chance. The dining hall is something that is available and tangible to every student on campus, which is what Radford is furthering on Foucault’s definition.

In summary, the dining hall at Augustana College is one way in which discursive formation is present in student’s lives every day. With the discursive practices of different types of food every day, to the roles of the student workers, discursive formation is at play every day. With the five units contributing to the dining hall, students are able to see how each unit plays a role. There are power structures built in place, both intentionally and unintentionally, and rules set by both students and administration. Using this example of the dining hall, something that is tangible and has an effect on students, is a great example of Foucault’s formation, and is something that every student can understand.
