I’M MOVING TO THE UK 🇬🇧 (again)!

(I know my last post on here was about being out of London for 3 years, kinda fitting this is the next one on here, also this was taken from my Facebook post, so not completely blog style🌞)

(This is a long one, go straight to the bottom for cliff notes if you want😅)

10 years ago I moved to London 🇬🇧 to try make my mark in the world as a creative, and as most of you know I came back to SA after only a year and a bit, broken-hearted, depressed and shattered (due to a multitude of factors😔). I worked for a bit in JHB, and got a bit of my mojo back. I then moved to Cape Town in 2014, where I fell in love with a city for the first time. I made incredible friends, did many adventurous things 🤸🏼‍♀️ and really started to work on myself on a microscopic level✨. I also continued to make incredibly bad money decisions💸, leading to debt while still dealing with depression and low self confidence. I went on a course that flipped me upside down and really brought myself into my own view (if that makes sense). I knew I couldn’t live the way I was living anymore and something needed to change.

In March 2018 I decided to go travel ✈️ to get a new perspective on life and myself, I also wanted to visit one of my best friends that had just had a baby and recently moved to Toronto, Canada. I managed to get the money together, book flights, move my house into storage and my cats flew to Joburg to be babysat by my parents. 6 weeks in North America was an enriching and soul healing experience❣️. Not because of any one thing happening, it just gave me time to reset, relook and revalue what I want in life. Walking around the Toronto streets by myself at night was the icing on the cake that made me realise that I want this kind of life, this kind of freedom. 🦋

The soul healing increased in intensity when I got back to Joburg as I started working with my mom on a spiritual level, in depth. It was hard, frustrating, draining and incredibly painful 😫 to take the rose tinted glasses off through which we view ourselves sometimes, and on the flip side apply the rose tint to the good qualities. Finding that balance between light and shadow. 🌓

Because of travelling I have known for a while I want to move somewhere I feel safer, more secure being by myself, doing things by myself. 🌟

A year and a half ago (January 2019) I made the decision to leave South Africa once again, to explore a different life/opportunities. I entered the Express Entry Pool for Canadian immigration 🇨🇦 in June 2019. I was hopeful, excited, nervous. I applied or jobs, I was obsessively looking on the facebook groups to see if there were any loopholes, changes, anything to get me in. I spent a fair bit of money getting my degree assessed and writing an english test (twice) to gain as many points as possible in hopes of getting in🤞🏼. The threshold of points kept going up and mine sat pretty low on the scale (no masters degree, being 30 or older etc etc). When I had first started looking into it, the National Occupation Code (NOC) that I fell into was on the skills shortage list, but just before I got everything together to apply they took it off the in demand list. In January my points went down by 5 as I had turned 31 and July this year, my profile expired. I felt so disheartened. 😞

NB: Canada is not off the table, it is in my sights, just may be down the road, but who knows where this journey will take me.

In February this year a very traumatic experience, right outside my house, sealed my decision to leave and seek a safer life. Don’t get me wrong, I love South Africa 🇿🇦, it’s in my soul, the weather and sites are just amazing, the people are pretty amazing too (mostly)🌞. But after a few traumatic experiences, the way the government has annihilated taxpayers money and generally take no responsibility for their actions, my anxiety is through the roof. The fact that I don’t even feel safe walking around my neighbourhood with my parents and dogs or by myself in a dog park really gets to me, I feel trapped. If the sun isn’t shining and I’m not in the (so thought) safety of my walls (and electric fencing) I’m on edge. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The day after my Express Entry Profile expired for Canada, I decided to relook living in the UK 🇬🇧. The first time around was really not the best experience, but that was 10 years ago. That was a different Chloë. I can make this second attempt a way better one because I have so much more life experience, work experience, mental attitude and fortitude, emotional maturity and sense of self worth (this all is still an ongoing learning curve, but thats the beauty of life). Not to mention I am waaaaaay better at handling my money! haha!🤣

I gathered all my documents to apply for my Ancestral Visa, and found that I had saved, in the last year, more than enough money for the application fee, TB test and the NHS surcharge (payable upfront for 5 years – the exchange rate DID NOT help much 😂). I had to order new FULL birth certificates for my grandparents (to prove I’m of British decent, apparently the small old ones I had used previously no longer applied) and then voilà! I got my biometrics appointment on the 31st August and VISA APPROVAL (9th Sept)!

I know that there will be many new challenges that this will bring. But I’m also looking forward to the growth and self exploration that comes with it. 💪🏼 AND just so you know I’m going into this eyes wide open 👀. I know every country has its problems, societal and governmental. The UK isn’t going to be “greener on the other side”, it will be what I make of it, where I place my energy. (Also LOL because it is so much greener, thanks to alllllll the rain 😆).

SO, well done if you actually read all that (a 🌟 for you💚)! I will be tying up all my things here in SA over the next two months and plan to be in the UK by mid November – very much looking forward to spending Christmas with my 95 year old Gran ❤️(covid permitting 🥺).

🏠WHERE: I will also be putting a proper plan together for myself for when I’m actually there as I aim to just hop around a bit until I find a good fit for myself to settle (very much looking at Bristol, suggestions welcome). If any friends and family over there have space for me for a few nights (or weeks) from time to time would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 London wasn’t my happy place (except for the music scene) and my priorities in life have changed since I was 21/22 – outdoors are much more involved now!

👩🏼‍💻WORK: I am aiming to carry on with my freelancing business as I want to keep my clients I have here in SA (already spoke to them), but I’m currently networking hard on linkedin to get some British clients going, ANY HELP in this regard would also be HIGHLY appreciated.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 (some already have helped and I greatly appreciate this, thank you.)

Tale as old as time

So the other day I went on somewhat of a twitter rant regarding the remake of Beauty and The Beast and Disney’s choice to incorporate a gay character into the movie. I was surprised at how many responses (particularly DM’s) I got regarding my post(s) and so I’ve decided to write a tad more about it on a platform that gave me more than 140 characters. It’s Friday night, I’m drinking tequila in pajamas and writing about a Disney movie. Living the dream, am I right? So, to help put into context where I was coming from when I wrote my tweets:

The original story of Beauty and The Beast came out in 1701 (HOLY CRAP, RIGHT?) and Disney turned that story into an original film in 1991. I was born in 1993, so as a child I grew up watching the “OG” Disney princess movies. B&TB, The Little mermaid, Snow White, Pocahontas, etc. etc. That being said, even as A young child, I was never obsessed with the Disney princesses or their stories. They were all well and good but I didn’t LOVE the music or the stories, so usually seeing them once was enough for me.

Except for B&TB. Beauty and The Beast was TOTALLY different for me. I remember being 6 or 7 and having a babysitter come over to watch my twin brother and I, and she brought B&TB for us to watch. We made popcorn and turned off the lights and popped in the VHS (lol) and immediately I was hooked. The opening scene, which plays out like it’s being read from a story book, stayed with me well into adulthood.

“Who could ever love a beast?”

The opening monologue sets up The Beast’s storyline. The Beast is a handsome, wealthy prince who, in his selfishness and narcissism, refuses to help a homeless woman seeking shelter from a storm. Unfortunately for the handsome young prince, the homeless woman ends up being a witch (like, go figure, right?), who curses the beast with ugliness. Until the Beast can learn kindness and let love into his heart, he’ll remain a physical representation of the monster he is. AKA, The Beast.

I remember sitting down on the couch next to my (straight) twin brother, whose initial thoughts on the beast were:

1) OMG HE’S SO SCARY

and

2) What a jerk!

After the opening monologue, six year old me thought the exact same thing. As the movie progresses we meet Belle, A smart, assertive, beautiful young woman in a small french town who loves her dad, reading, and creating inventions. Belle is great, I love Belle. She wasn’t selfish like Arial and she wasn’t willing to risk the lives of her family and friends for love like Pocahontas. Belle had a love for books, which, even that young, I identified with. I love reading to this day, and I can trace that love back to Belle.

But this post, as well as my post earlier this week on twitter, is not about Belle.

This post is about The Beast and Gaston. Six year old me was introduced to Gaston, the handsome, masculine, arrogant suitor whose story is entirely centered around his pursuit of Belle. Six year old me watched B&TB and could NOT understand what Belle DIDN’T like about him. He was so handsome and charming and willing to do just about ANYTHING to impress Belle. Why didn’t she like him? I liked him. I liked him A LOT.

I remember innocently thinking these things to myself, and then hearing my twin brother say stuff about Gaston which was NOTHING like what I was thinking.

“He’s evil!”

“He doesn’t love her!”

“What a jerk!”

Six year old me at the time didn’t realize that I was having my first gay crush. As I grew up, I’d feel the same thing for a myriad of fictional characters. Literally all the male Power Rangers, Batman AND Robin, Ice Man...the list goes on and on. But thats one of the first times I really remember having a “gay” thought. I thought Gaston was handsome.

Belle’s dad eventually gets captured by the enigmatic and terrifying Beast.

As the story continues, Belle ends up sacrificing her freedom in exchange for her father’s (WHAT A BRAVE BITCH THOUGH, FOR REAL), who in turn rushes back to town to try and convince people to go and save Belle. While this is happening, Belle is held as prisoner by The Beast, who, as my brother put at the time was “really scary.” The Beast is a total dick. He demands Belle only venture to certain parts of the castle, is constantly storming around and shouting at Belle and the enchanted pieces of anthropomorphic furniture that inhabit the castle, and is honestly more dramatic than a Real House Wife. However, as time progresses, the Beast and Belle begin to form a relationship. That catalyst to this relationship being when The Beast saves Belle from a pack of wolves who were DEF going to eat her and her horse. It’s the first time we see that The Beast is NOT as harsh as his exterior may insinuate, and it’s the first real moment where Belle sees The Beast as more than just a monster. The rest of the story I know most of you are familiar with, so I won’t spend the rest of this post giving a synopsis. At the end of the movie, The Beast realizes his love for Belle, who has spent majority of the movie showing The Beast that he’s capable of loving someone other than himself. They finally kiss, and The Beast transforms back into his human form, and they all live happily ever after.

Six year old me was shook.

I remember asking our babysitter if I could borrow the movie, and after she had left and everyone in our house had gone to bed, watching it again. It was so epic, the whole thing. Gaston getting a WHOLE town to venture into the woods to kill a monster so he could marry Belle. The Beast fighting Gaston on a rooftop in the middle of fucking rainstorm so HE could be with Belle. I remember thinking how jealous of Belle I was. TWO GUYS fighting over her, hello?

But in all seriousness, six year old me liked the movie a lot. It stuck with me.

So when 12 year old me rewatched the movie in the middle of a ton of puberty, suddenly the movie was A LOT more important. Six years later and I felt like The Beast. At this point I knew I was gay. I knew what gay was, and I knew that was what I was. Like so many guys in the closet, I hid it to the best of my ability, and my best act was by being a fucking jerk. I was nasty to my brother, my friends, parents, girls, guys, dogs, bugs, whatever. If it had a pulse, I had to put up some level of crassness because that would divert form the fact that I really wanted a boyfriend.

Suddenly, The Beast was not so scary.

“...Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind...”

“WHO COULD EVER LOVE A BEAST?”

There was Gaston again, his bulging muscles, his slicked back hair. “God,” I remember muttering to myself, “what is wrong with me?”

At this point, I knew Gaston was a piece of shit...But he was still hot.

As a teenager I remember watching the movie alone and really relating to The Beast. His castle, all by himself...cold, angry, upset. The Beast tears mirrors in his house down because he can hardly stand the sight of himself. The Beast does everything but injure the other inhabitants of the castle, who live not only in fear of him, but in confusion as to why he is the way he is. I can only imagine my family and friends thought similar things about me. Then Belle comes in, and she’s brave, and she’s kind, and she’s patient.

They slowly learn about each other, they bond over books and animals.

16 and 17 year old me wished desperately for a boy like Belle. Someone who was going to look past my harsh exterior, past the parts of myself I could hardly stand to look at. Belle shows The Beast that we all have parts of ourselves that we don’t like. Belle shows The Beast that we deserve love not in despite of our beasts, but because of them. Our “beasts” are just a part of us, not who we are as a whole.

Beauty and The Beast taught me from a very young age that we all deserved love, that monsters live inside of all of us--and that love sees through them. Beauty and the Beast helped show me my gayness, and time and time again showed me that even though I didn’t like who I was, someone would love me for it.

SO when Disney announced earlier this week that they were writing in a gay character into the live action remake of B&TB, it struck a real nerve. When I found out that Lefou, Gaston’s sidekick, would have a “gay moment” directed at Gaston, I had mixed emotions. The six year old me totally would have understood Lefou’s infatuation with Gaston. Even 23 year old me gets it. However, what bothered me was the obvious stereotypical storyline of the gay man falling in love with a straight guy.

I’m thrilled Disney is trying to incorporate queerness into its content. I want to make that clear. I think the more LGBTQ characters we can incorporate into mainstream media, the better. That was NOT what I was getting at in my tweets the other day. Really I was expressing my frustration for how Disney had decided to incorporate gayness into Beauty and the Beast, a story that had helped me understand and realize my own sexuality. I’m frustrated because I KNOW countless young boys (some of whom ARE gay) are going to end up seeing this movie, and rather than see a gay character who recognizes his love and infatuation as something good and worthy and something not to be ashamed of...Is going to see it in a way I remember feeling it SO many times while watching the original Beauty and The Beast. Disney has a real opportunity to show that gay love is something just as true and good as the love between Belle and the prince, love that deserves a happy ending. MY HOPE is that they take that opportunity with Lefou and make it something that helps little kids the way I NEEDED it when I was young.

Gay love is real love, gay love is pure love, and gay love is powerful. It is JUST as scary and unexpected and magical as love between a man and a woman. Beauty and The Beast helped me realize that, and I hope that the remake can help evoke those same emotions for a generation of gay youth that are going to see it.

Well-wishes can be sent to [email protected] where they'll be sent on by his PR guy.When I went into hospital a week or so ago, it was accompanied by the news that conventional chemotherapys effectiveness had been exhausted. My body has become resistant to all forms of it according to my oncologist. 46 chemo treatments, 138 days plugged into a pump. Let nobody ever say I wasn't stubborn. Unfortunately this was followed up a couple of days later with some more bad news. My liver is failing and its effectiveness has lowered past the point where the clinical trials I had been offered would take me on. Yes apparently there are things that are too dangerous for even the terminal. Obviously we're going to keep looking for other trials but I'm currently coming to terms with the fact that I don't have long left and right now at any rate, there is literally nothing I can do about it other than try to manage the pain as best as possible and stay as hydrated as possible to ease the pressure on the liver. There are quite a few pain management options left to try and the ones that I am using can be increased in dosage quite significantly if need be. The majority of the pain is being caused by pressure on the spine from hardened nodules in the liver and lung as well as fluid. We haven't fully explored the options for dealing with all of that, but its high priority so that my quality-of-life can improve.That's what it comes down to now, getting my quality-of-life to as good a standard as possible. Even though you don't really have any treatments to fight with any more, I firmly believe that the will to live is a very strong asset and that is much easier to maintain when you're not in crippling pain all the time.That will most likely be my last health update, unless some miracle happens or we do indeed find a trial that can do something despite the damage to my liver. I'd ask people not to speculate about how long I might have left. I've deliberately left out some details to try and reduce the behavior, though it might very well have the opposite effect. All I do know is that kind of thing is upsetting to some of my viewers that read it and I'd rather not encourage it. I've already exceeded the "usual" lifespan of someone with my condition so whatever numbers people come up with are just that.Its now a case of "what do I do with the time I have left?" This has been a big complication for a few months, but back in October of 2008, I had a physical exam and my provider billed, what I assumed at the time, my primary insurance company (Horizon NJ Health). However, two years later, Horizon took back that money and my provider has been billing me for that physical back in 2008. I called Horizon and apparently they took back the money because I had another health insurance, and Horizon was no longer my primary. I had not known about my other health insurance company, Aetna student health care, since they never gave me any information or membership details, and I was automatically enrolled for it when I entered my university. When I contacted Aetna, they told me that they weren't the primary insurance company because they were just student health care. After several phone calls back and forth between Aetna and Horizon... I STILL haven't figured out who my primary insurance company is since they both claim to be the secondary insurance (and they seem to have endless reasons why the other is primary). Ok the situation is as follows: I am selling my car for a new one. I have asked my current insurer to transfer my policy to the new car which is fine. I think with this game constantly going to rocks and changing targets the majority was ever changing. What did you do to keep yourself in the loop and part of that changing majority?

Roxy’s Response: Hey sam :) I know you probably aren’t considering voting for me and you have your winner clear in your mind but I’d like you to at least consider my game. The thing about my game is: I didn’t really need to stay in the loop to survive. And when i did i was in the loop. The moment i became in the loop was the day i started tryna get you out and jay went out instead. how was i in the loop? i had carson as a loyal ally to tell me things like how nicholas voted with us and not pippa. I was aware who was close to who. nicholas x carson sam x pippa sam x nicholas ( a bit) sarah —> sam but sam still wanted her out lmfao mostly cause of pippa i feel.

Before i didn’t really need it. I didn’t need to vote in majorities. If i needed it i would’ve been out long ago! but I’m in f3. I was aware when i needed to be. I was utr when i didn’t need to play it up and overplay! Why did i need to be part of rocks knowledge? lol rocks are dumb they are risky! you can loose your closest allies! the goat can leave ur f2 can leave. Why on earth would i wanna be part of a rocks pact? The only time i was aware of rocks was the day jay left. Getting you out was something i thought was important so i decided to risk it going to rocks to try getting you out. There was no logic to keeping you in. you were part of a side i wasn’t part of. we barley talked and when we did it was made clear we didn’t see eye to eye. before that vote. i didn’t need any of it! i was aware pre merge through shea and through my alliance with sarah and kjay and i was aware of darain’s targets (lol he was super vocal about them) and when it was time to stop being utr, the day my meat shield got voted out, that was the day i became aware. carson came to me and suggested to vote sarah out. she was my ally she was in an alliance with shea and i. I led votes on the game’s threat or at least the game’s threat’s ally (pip is the threat). Pip told me she voted you. through carson and sarah i learnt that it was nicholas who voted with us. more from carson. now lets think about that fact. I learnt more about the game from the guy i allied the day before than from the girl i was allied with since day 1? i was able to form a bond with someone and make myself seem trustworthy enough to depend on and to share information with after only 1 day of talking?!?! now who says i got no social!! When votes started flipping on carson i knew but i vote with carson 1. to stay loyal and 2. in hopes there was any chance of saving him. even though he was gone i was still law aware. everyone’s targets were clear in my eyes. when i wanted you out over pip cause i knew you were better at challenges and pip deserved at least 4th place and sarah wasn’t up for that? i was informed about it by nicholas. when i didn’t need info i didn’t need it. i didn’t search for it. when i did need it it came to me and fell on my lap! i didn’t even ask for the information! ppl just came to me! lmfao.

rob: I talk to you now and you are geunanley super fun to talk to. You are smart and fun and I’m sad we never got the chance to work with in this game. I hope to become close to you cause i see a best friend in the making.

Jay: you are chilled cool dude. loyal to your allies and admirable for your sacrifice for sam. You are fun to talk to and you were fun to be hosted by. You seemed to have a solid game with solid allies. unfortunatley i wasn’t in the position to be one of them since we started the game in starkly different situations.

Being your fight buddy was fun. being your ally was fun. I enjoyed sharing the same name with you although julia isn’t my real name lmfao.

Carson: oh god mate where to begin. I owe you so much. Im so glad we made up from wonderland. In wonderland i was too stubborn and only saw one target on my mind. i wasn’t foexible enough to let myself work with those from the other tribe because i feared the numbers and the premades. Im so gal dee were able to work if even for one tribal in this game. You were edu not talk to and a great ally while it lasted! You were the kick i needed in this game and I’m happy to finally be able to call you my ally in a way i wasn’t able to in wonderland!

Stevie: I honestly don’t really know you. I can’t praise you with false praises when idk what makes you you. I hope to change that going forward since we are in a new game together. I hope to see what your allies saw in you and why people wanted to keep you around as long as they did :)

Shea: seriously. no words describe what you mean to me. you are my no 1 since arabia. you fought through many orgs with me and i can’t than your loyalty enough. We started off on diff tribes. random.org even put you at the bottom of my favs list during the first swap lmfao and yet you still managed to be in the most liked group. says something about you as a person :P I’ll pray for another game with you and this time we might have scenarios where we can depend on each other! id love to see how that feels :)

Sarah’s Response: Heres the thing. I knew there were people in this game that would always be the first to throw out a name. I knew who they would tell, and I always made sure I was close with the people surrounding me. It has been proven on multiple occasions that Pippa decided the vote. She was always the first to throw out a name, and we always did a recourse of that. Either going with her, or going against her. For the majority of the time up until the Jay vote it was with her. Vs after that when I really started to go against what she was saying. Its always good to just keep your enemies close, which is exactly what I did for the majority of merge. While Pippa was calling the shots and painting a target on her back. I kinda just sat back and made moves to counteract that when needed be.
