I already know I'm going to sound at least slightly unhinged when I tell someone it's a specific eagle symbol, because that's the only one with wings angled outwards instead of downwards or mostly downwards but more spread out to the sides.

Which is like "Franz, why did you memorize the way (mostly german and austrian) heraldic eagles have their wings angled?" and the answer is simple. That's one of the easiest ways to differenciate them, because it's a very visible part. Also there is only one with wings angled like that and that's one of the more important one to recognize.

#eagles are a really old heraldic symbol for both germany and austria #like the first one that has the same colors as the current german one is from the holy roman empire #the austrian one is from around the same time #i will definitely sound a bit more unhinged. when i start counting feathers and memorize that #the bundesadler has 10 feathers on their wings btw. five on each #see? that's a weird thing to just know #sadly i can't memorize more right now. i have to go to work #-franz
