Author's Note: So excited for this fic though I hated writing this chapter because a lot of the lines I took directly from the book, which made me feel lazy. I was excited to flesh out our love interest but realised that this is his last chapter in the book where we'll get his POV lmao.

Lestat carved the final stroke in the wood and stood back to appraise his work. It wasn't his usual medium and took much more time than sketching or painting. Though now that he looked at it, it wasn't good. Foolish in his belief that he'd get it in the first try he threw the tool across the room and sighed, gripping into his hair.

He was restless. It had not been this bad since 1471 but then again Lestat had tried to wait it out the previous years before this. His Saint had lived half a century and though half of that Lestat had been in a daze. It had felt like a fever those years. A haze he could not make sense of.

He felt like that now. Going in and out of reality. Reliving memories stacked on memories. The door to the studio opened and in came Mathias. He was an old man, wise but had some humour on his bone. "All is well?" He asked, walking over to appraise Lestat's work.

Lestat hummed a negative as he turned to the carving. "A wood engraving? I did not know you worked in this medium." He said, walking closer, his hands fluttering over the work. Lestat wanted to rip his hands off. He wanted to scream. Instead he answered:

"My first time. I thought it would make a good challenge."

"Not much of a challenge is it, if you're this good at it." Mathias laughed.

"Not good enough. The subject figure...it didn't come out right. Doesn't capture the likeliness of my muse." Lestat was surprised by his honesty but then he wasn't in his right mind, now was he? Trembling in grief and fatigue.

Mathias took back his hand at last and turned to Lestat. "You worked from memory?" A hint of surprise in his tone.

"Forced to," Lestat answered approaching nearer to his work, trailing one single finger in the arch of his Saint's hips. "He was taken away from me."

There was silence that told a lot. Mathias had known Lestat was interested in one of his slaves but was too busy fucking his Saint to notice which one. And how it had tormented Lestat. This era was the most difficult of eras for him.

His hesitation in following the laws and his eagerness to have his Saint again had led to a tumbling of occurrence that had in the end, served to kill his Saint, taken from Lestat too soon. Lestat had treated his Saint roughly. Because of his restlessness and eagerness and desperation for this curse to end.

He was not proud of what role he had into his death but he could not feel wholly guilty because he was still sure that death was kinder than what life his Saint endured.

Mathias asked, under his breath as if ashamed of the question he had already had the answer to. "And the title of your work?"

"The Voyage of the Sable Venus from Angola to the West Indies." Lestat spit out, harsh. He turned to face Mathias who stood tall in his short height, who flinched.

He frowned, looked away to the art piece. "Ah, Venus." He said softly. "A beautiful thing. He was a demon, you know? No man or woman did not desire him in some form or other."

Lestat could not speak with the rage that built up in him. His back burned from the urge to let his wings out. Mathias stood none the wiser. Too busy trying to put himself in good lighting to a judge to his actions that didn't exist. "The sin I committed with Venus wasn't my fault to bear. Man may not lay with man. But he was a demon. An angel. Even you, holy in your standing and above all, could not resist. It does not make me a lesser man."

Lestat turned and strutted out the room before he would lay his hands on that wretched man.

In 1827 England, slavery was abolish and black slaves became "apprentices" under white men. In the final draft Louis is named Venus after his what his mother had believed was his grandfather who was a slave and looked exactly like him. I wanted to stick to history as much as possible.

This led me to The Voyage of the Sable Venus from Angola to the West Indies. Slaves were often used for more than just labour but also sexual gratification from their owners. Many slaves were raped, especially women.

This artwork was part of a series of works and poems. Here is the link. It explains in summary how slaves were named after strong figures to further make the master feel powerful in dominating them and a show of how well taught the master is. Most slave women were named after goddesses because of this.

Because of reasons I will not disclose, Louis is more sexualised because of his unique image in this era of time. It was interesting to write and it was such a good lore to take but I realised it would make the chapter longer and not make much sense since we do not get to meet Louis here.

Introducing the Hours of Étienne Thirion, hyperopic Receiver General of Montréal

Fifty-two discoveries from the BiblioPhilly project, No. 15/52

Last week, we examined the fascinating imprints left by eyeglasses in this Book of Hours from the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA 1945-65-14). Today, we’ll take a closer look at the identity of the book’s first owner, and the artist he commissioned to paint the book’s miniatures.

When the book was described in the auction catalogue of the Étienne Mallet collection (Sotheby’s, London, May 4-5, 1926, lot 55; catalog clipping on folio 1r), and around the same time on the lower pastedown, it was noted that it displayed the arms of a certain “N. Champion d’Auxerre” or “d’Avalon,” and of “Minard,” the latter interpretation probably based on a seventeenth- or eighteenth-century inscription found on folio 3r.

This suspect ownership information was repeated when the book was gifted to the PMA as part of the Philip S. Collins Collection,[1] and again shortly thereafter in the supplement to the de Ricci census.[2] Also noted in the 1926 auction and subsequently repeated was the presence of a finely written Latin inscription of a certain Stephano Thyrion on folio 2r, thought to be that of a later owner (“Iste heure pertinent Stephano Thyrion Receptore de monte regali”).

Curious about the identity of this “Stephano Thyrion,” and not able to find any Champion or Minard heraldry comparable to that found in the book in any of the regular reference sources, I began to delve further into his name, which seemed to be a Latinization of the French Étienne Thirion. Indeed, some searching through La noblesse aux états de Bourgogne de 1350 à 1789, a nineteenth-century dictionary of Burgundian nobility (for the book’s miniatures appear to have been painted in Dijon–more on that below), reveals a certain Étienne Thirion II, whose father, likewise named Étienne, was “procureur” of Montréal (Monte Regali in Latin) in 1539. A procureur was a kind of public prosecutor or receiver general that can be equated with the Latin “receptore” title found in the inscription. The historic town of Montréal is located about eighty kilometers west of Dijon, today in the Yonne department. The collegiate church in that town contains choir stalls dating from 1522, vividly carved in a style that matches the miniatures of the Book of Hours. One can imagine Étienne coming close to these, when using his book at Mass, and remarking on his own good taste.

How can we be sure that this Étienne Thirion I was the man depicted in the book, and not just the early owner who inscribed its first folio? Crucially, the entry in La noblesse aux états de Bourgogne provides the heraldry of this family: “De… à un guerrier de carnation armé d’une masse et d’un bouclier.” (“Of… [unknown background color], a warrior carnation armed with a club and a shield”). While the fields in the coats-of-arms in our book are most definitely red and the color of the warrior gold and not carnation, this description is sufficiently close, and the presence of a warrior with a club and shield sufficiently unusual, to be able to identify the original owner of the book definitively as Étienne Thirion I, depicted kneeling in prayer with a book in the handsome miniature on folio 25v. Thirion’s coat-of-arms is depicted no less than three times in the manuscript: alone accompanying his portrait on folio 25v, hanging from a tree alongside that of his wife on the armorial frontispiece on folio 3r, and impaled with those of his wife on folio 12r. His wife’s identity remains a mystery, but her heraldry (sable a cat sejant argent) does not seem to be that of the Minard family as earlier descriptions of the manuscript had indicated. Perhaps a ailurophile heraldist will be able to find the answer.

As we already mentioned, the style of the manuscript’s decoration suggests that it was produced in Burgundy, likely Dijon, where in the early sixteenth century a rather scruffy, busy painterly style predominated.[3] The presence on folio 3v of an almanac for twenty years beginning in 1518 confirms a date of production on or shortly before that year.

While the style of the book’s decoration and miniatures is somewhat rough, the overall effect is not without interest. The fanciful all’antica-style architectural frames are rendered in a thin wash of gold, with definition provided by highlights of reddish orange. Most eye-catching are the full-page miniatures of the Martyrdom of Saint John the Evangelist, the composition of which is based on Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse woodcut print from 1496–97, and the Office of the Dead, which shows a group of Franciscan (?) monks and nuns and a man and woman mourning a naked dead body laid on a table.

The artist at work in the Book of Hours seems to be identifiable with the anonymous illuminator who decorated the Hours of Bénigne Serre (1482–1552), dated to 1524 and now in a private collection in Switzerland but fully digitized thanks to the work of the e-Codices project.[4] Serre was the son of a Dijon merchant, and was from a similar background as Thirion, having risen through the ranks of local administration to obtain a barony and a seigneury around the time he commissioned his Book of Hours. Though the PMA manuscript is considerably larger and less richly illuminated, the two Books of Hours share some remarkable similarities. Compare, for example, the playful putti and bas-de-page vignettes in both books’ Annunciation pages, or the climbing putti and spiral columns likewise shared across both manuscripts. Thus, in addition to being a convenient resting-place for Thirion’s eyeglasses (we suspect), this Book of Hours also serves as a precious new element in our understanding of sixteenth-century book illumination in the Burgundian capital.[5]

La navigation en Bretagne Sud est riche de surprises, de paysages et d’histoire. Voici 10 escales indispensables pour une croisière en famille. La Bretagne est la région qui possède le plus long rivage. Cette terre de marins a mis au monde les plus grands navigateurs français, de Surcouf à Armel Le Cléac’h en passant par EricTabarly. Au-delà de son histoire maritime, la côte bretonne est une des plus belles de France, voire d’Europe. La côte nord, connue pour ses baies et sa côte de Granit Rose est réputée dangereuse, par ses marées et ses cailloux, nombreux par endroits. La côte sud, elle, est tout aussi belle et beaucoup plus paisible. Naviguer de Piriac à Audierne ne pose pas de problème spécifique. Les courants sont raisonnables et les coups de vent ne prennent pas par surprise, quand on connaît les effets de brises côtières. Les fonds ne sont que rarement accidentés et les abris nombreux. Faire une croisière en Bretagne Sud, c’est choisir de naviguer entre les îles et leurs couleurs. C’est aussi choisir de naviguer à destination de nombreuses villes d’Art et d’Histoire. Enfin, c’est choisir de faire escale dans des petits ports de plaisance ou ports de pêche, voire des mouillages forains. Voici notre sélection de 10 escales indispensables entre Piriac et Audierne.

La Roche Bernard

Bruno Corpet (Quoique) — Travail personnel La Roche Bernard est un petit port niché entre les falaises du bord de la Vilaine. Cette petite cité de caractère est magnifique. Un grand port de plaisance est venu s’ajouter au petit port historique, entouré de maisons en pierre bretonne. Un port paisible, d’eau douce qui vous fera changer d’atmosphère. Pensez à naviguer vers Redon, la Vilaine offre des paysages magnifiques.

Une île dans le Golfe du Morbihan

En sortant de la Vilaine, vous prendrez la direction de la Baie de Quiberon. Cette Baie est considérée comme une des plus belles du monde. Le Golfe du Morbihan, en particulier, est une étape qui vous permettra de naviguer entre mer et campagne. Vous pourrez mouiller au bord d’une des innombrables îles du Golfe, quelques soit la direction du vent. Le Golfe du Morbihan permet de naviguer au calme, quand la météo se fait capricieuse. Les îles les plus agréables sont l’île aux moines, l’île d’Arz, l’île aux Mouton ou l’île Longue.

Le petit port de Saint Goustan

Au-delà de ses îles, le Golfe du Morbihan est connu pour ses nombreux petits ports de pêcheurs comme Locmariaquer, Conleau ou en encore Le Bono. Mais le plus joli se situe au fond de la rivière du Loch. Il s’agit de Saint Goustan, un ancien port de commerce et, accessoirement, repère des chouans pendant la Révolution Française. Saint Goustan propose quelques bouées visiteurs, en plein courant. Une escale qui s’impose pour déambuler dans les rues de la basse ville, découvrir son grand marché et ses belles demeures, en hauteur.

L'île de Hoëdic

Après 48 heurs dans Le Golfe, vous pourrez reprendre le large, vers les îles de la Baie. La première est Hoëdic. Hoëdic est sans doute la plus jolie des îles de la baie et surtout, vous découvrirez une ambiance et un caractère spécifique. Son petit port, port l'Argol, est composé de 3 tonnes, sur lesquelles vous vous amarrerez en étoiles. Une manœuvre qui peut être sportive. Le bourg est situé à 15mn de marche. Ambiance garantie. Profitez-en pour faire le tour de l’île et découvrir ses nombreuses criques. Attention aux brises côtière, la nuit, qui peuvent rendre le mouillage désagréable. Sauzon, escale hors du temps à Belle Île

Après une journée d’escale, vous pourrez prendre la direction de Belle Île. Cependant, il est indispensable de s’arrêter, pour le déjeuner, le long de la grande plage de Houat. Une plage magnifique, de sable fin. Vous prendrez, ensuite, la direction de Sauzon un port très agréable de Belle Île. Sauzon est un ancien port de pêche niché au fond d’une ria de l’île. Le port est plein de charme. Une escale qui offrira de belles balades vers la pointe des Poulains. N’hésitez pas à profiter des restaurants le long du port pour déguster crêpes ou fruits de mer.

Groix et la Rade de Lorient

En quittant Belle île et en prenant la direction de l’ouest, vous arrivez sur la rade de Lorient, ou Groix. Là encore, vous devrez faire escale pour profiter d’une nouvelle ambiance. Vous aurez le choix entre l’île de Groix et son port, Port Tudy, un ancien port thonier. L’ambiance, dans le port, est incroyable. Entre l’ambiance des pontons et les bistrots, le dépaysement est garanti. Si vous préférez mettre un pied sur le continent, vous aurez le choix entre les 5 ports de la Rade de Lorient, aux ambiances différentes. Le Port de Lorient propose une escale en plein centre ville de la capitale de la culture celtique. De l’autre côté, vous pourrez profiter du port de Locmiquelic ou Port Louis, au pied de la Citadelle.

Doelan, les rias bretonnes

On repart vers l’ouest, direction les rias du Finistère. Il vous sera impossible de passer à côté des rivières du belon, de l’Aven ou de l’Odet. C’est encore une fois l’occasion de naviguer entre mer et campagne, au calme des forêts de pins et des champs, navigant au gré du chant des oiseaux et des clochés. Si Doelan n’est pas la plus profonde, c’est sans doute le port le plus joli. Ce petit port de pêche borde une petite ria des deux côtés. Une véritable photo de Bretagne.

L'archipel des Glénan

L’archipel des Glénan est la dernière occasion de profiter d’un mouillage sur une île. Cet archipel n’est pas très grand mais mérite une escale pour ces fonds marins et la couleur de ses fonds. Vous vous retrouvez dans les îles du Pacifique ou des Antilles, à quelques miles de Concarneau et Loctudy. Plusieurs mouillages vous permettront de passer la nuit. Je vous conseille d’embarquer un kayak et de visiter les différentes îles de l’archipel.

Concarneau, la ville des marins

Face aux Glénan, se trouve la baie de La Forêt Fouesnant. Si Port la Forêt est réputé pour son centre d’entrainement et sa filière course au large, l’escale la plus agréable est bien Concarneau. Ce port mutlicativité est aussi bien une escale technique que touristique. De nombreux professionnels de la mer et la plaisance permettront d’entretenir ou d’effectuer quelques réparations. Dans le même temps, vous serez amarré au ponton, en cœur de ville, au pied des remparts de la ville close. L’été, c’est ambiance garantie avec concerts tous les soirs.

Loctudy, avant d'aller vers la Pointe du Raz

Pour terminer notre croisière en Bretagne Sud, nous prendrons la direction de Loctudy, un port de pêche actif et une ambiance bigoudène garantie. Le port est situé à l’entrée d’une petite rade. L’autre côté, est situé l’île Tudy. Si vous avez une annexe, allez boire un verre de l’autre côté et vous balader dans les petites ruelles de maison bretonnes. Sinon, profitez-en pour échanger avec les pêcheurs du coin sur leurs aventures. Pour résumer, la Bretagne Sud est une destination croisière incroyable. Si elle ne vous garantit pas le soleil tous les jours, la météo est prévisible et, généralement, très agréable. La côte offre de nombreux ports et mouillages qui sont autant d'occasion de découvrir cette région et ses côtes variées. Une croisière idéale en famille, ou la navigation ne doit pas prendre le dessus sur les escales. Preuve en est, je voulais vous lister 10 escales, vous en avez au moins une vingtaine. CHAPITRE PREMIER

IL EST DES LIEUX OÙ SOUFFLE L’ESPRIT

Il est des lieux qui tirent l’âme de sa léthargie, des lieux enveloppés, baignés de mystère, élus de toute éternité pour être le siège de l’émotion religieuse. L’étroite prairie de Lourdes, entre un rocher et son gave rapide ; la plage mélancolique d’où les Saintes-Maries nous orientent vers la Sainte-Baume ; l’abrupt rocher de la Sainte-Victoire tout baigné d’horreur dantesque, quand on l’aborde par le vallon aux terres sanglantes ; l’héroïque Vézelay, en Bourgogne ; le Puy-de-Dôme ; les grottes des Eyzies, où l’on révère les premières traces de l’humanité ; la lande de Carnac, qui parmi les bruyères et les ajoncs dresse ses pierres inexpliquées ; la forêt de Brocéliande, pleine de rumeur et de feux follets, où Merlin par les jours d’orage gémit encore dans sa fontaine ; Alise-Sainte-Reine et le mont Auxois, promontoire sous une pluie presque constante, autel où les Gaulois moururent aux pieds de leurs dieux ; le mont Saint-Michel, qui surgit comme un miracle des sables mouvants ; la noire forêt des Ardennes, tout inquiétude et mystère, d’où le génie tira, du milieu des bêtes et des fées, ses fictions les plus aériennes ; Domremy enfin, qui porte encore sur sa colline son Bois Chenu, ses trois fontaines, sa chapelle de Bermont, et près de l’église la maison de Jeanne. Ce sont les temples du plein air. Ici nous éprouvons, soudain, le besoin de briser de chétives entraves pour nous épanouir à plus de lumière. Une émotion nous soulève ; notre énergie se déploie toute, et sur deux ailes de prière et de poésie s’élance à de grandes affirmations.

Tout l’être s’émeut, depuis ses racines les plus profondes jusqu’à ses sommets les plus hauts. C’est le sentiment religieux qui nous envahit. Il ébranle toutes nos forces. Mais craignons qu’une discipline lui manque, car la superstition, la mystagogie, la sorcellerie apparaissent aussitôt, et des places désignées pour être des lieux de perfectionnement par la prière deviennent des lieux de sabbat. C’est ce qu’indique le profond Gœthe, lorsque son Méphistophélès entraîne Faust sur la montagne du Hartz, sacrée par le génie germanique, pour y instaurer la liturgie sacrilège du Walpurgisnachtstraum.

D’où vient la puissance de ces lieux ? La doivent-ils au souvenir de quelque grand fait historique, à la beauté d’un site exceptionnel, à l’émotion des foules qui du fond des âges y vinrent s’émouvoir ? Leur vertu est plus mystérieuse. Elle précéda leur gloire et saurait y survivre. Que les chênes fatidiques soient coupés, la fontaine remplie de sable et les sentiers recouverts, ces solitudes ne sont pas déchues de pouvoir. La vapeur de leurs oracles s’exhale, même s’il n’est plus de prophétesse pour la respirer. Et n’en doutons pas, il est de par le monde infiniment de ces points spirituels qui ne sont pas encore révélés, pareils à ces âmes voilées dont nul n’a reconnu la grandeur. Combien de fois, au hasard d’une heureuse et profonde journée, n’avons-nous pas rencontré la lisière d’un bois, un sommet, une source, une simple prairie, qui nous commandaient de faire taire nos pensées et d’écouter plus profond que notre cœur ! Silence ! les dieux sont ici.

Illustres ou inconnus, oubliés ou à naître, de tels lieux nous entraînent, nous font admettre insensiblement un ordre de faits supérieurs à ceux où tourne à l’ordinaire notre vie. J’avais adoré découvrir la plume d’Aidan Adam avec le diptyque « Just Love Again ». L’histoire entre la princesse Leya et son papillon avait conquis mon p’tit cœur tout mou. D’ailleurs, j’en profite pour dire que si vous n’avez pas encore eu le plaisir de découvrir cette histoire, je n’aurais qu’un seul mot : FONCEZ !

Voici donc la quatrième collaboration entre Aidan et Black Ink. Cette fois-ci l’auteure propose une romance plus légère que la précédente, toujours avec l’envie, non dissimulée, de nous faire voyager !

Pari gagné de ce côté-là, direction Les Seychelles en ce tout début d’automne pour nous. D’emblée ce qui m’a plu c’est le choix de l’auteure d’avoir placé un titre de chanson à chaque début de chapitre. J’adore lorsqu’une playlist accompagne ma lecture, cela donne une tout autre dimension à ma découverte livresque.

Nous faisons donc connaissance avec Kaysha et Cali, deux meilleures amies et colocataires en partance pour de nouvelles aventures. Elles frôlent la trentaine et pourtant l’insouciance les habite. Elles se laissent porter au gré des opportunités qui se présentent à elles, sans contrainte ni carcan. Vous en rêvez aussi non ?

Les deux jeunes femmes décident donc de partir aux Seychelles travailler pour un groupe hôtelier de luxe. Plages de sables blanc, eau turquoise, températures de folie : vous voyez le tableau?? Leur rêve d’évasion et d’aventures va être comblé ! Aidan Adam n’a pas son pareil pour décrire les paysages qui entourent ses héroïnes. On s’y croirait. Il faut reconnaître aussi que les thèmes du voyage et de l’écologie, chers au cœur de l’auteure, sont véritablement présents tout au long du roman, c’est sa force!

Dane, sismologue et aristocrate malgré lui, va travailler sur une plateforme pétrolière au large de l’archipel des Seychelles. Alors que quelques jours de repos lui sont accordés, sa rencontre fortuite avec Kaysha va bouleverser sa vie à jamais. Lui qui est guindé et laisse si peu de place à l’improvisation dans son quotidien, va se rendre compte que de se laisser aller de temps en temps, cela peut être extrêmement jouissif !

Son éducation très stricte, sa diction et son vocabulaire très léché, offrent des dialogues savoureux. On sent que l’auteure s’est longuement documentée sur le travail d’un sismologue, notamment sur des plateformes pétrolières. Elle ne laisse jamais rien au hasard dans ses récits.

J’ai aimé lire le coup de foudre entre Kay et Dane, l’attachement de la jeune femme pour le beau gosse est touchant. Dane va mettre du temps à comprendre les changements qui s’opèrent dans son cœur. Mais il m’a manqué le p’tit truc en plus, le p’tit truc magique qui vous emporte, pour que je sois totalement conquise par leur couple.

Cela étant, j’ai passé un bon moment livresque, servi par la belle plume d’Aidan Adam. Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour offrir une jolie romance sous le soleil (mais pas que !): des paysages à couper le souffle, des personnages atypiques et une histoire d’amour délicate et sensuelle.

Londres aux Seychelles est une New Adult qui vous fera voyager dans les paysages les plus idylliques mais aussi les plus exposés à la colère des éléments !

Kaysha part avec sa meilleure amie Carla sur l’atoll Adalbra, aux Seychelles pour travailler dans un nouveau complexe hôtelier de luxe et écologique. Elle va rencontrer par hasard l’anglais, Dane Hastings, marquis d’Exeter, mais surtout sismologue travaillant sur une plateforme pétrolière dans l’océan Pacifique. Leur attirance charnelle va faire des étincelles !

Si deux univers se rencontraient sans le savoir : l’aristocratie et la liberté ?

Cette auteure a un véritable don pour vous immerger dans lieux de son histoire. Les descriptions sont si réelles, sans être ostentatoires, qu’on s’y croirait : les bruits, les odeurs, la faune, la flore et même les autochtones avec leurs croyances.

De plus, elle est attachée à l’écologie, au respect de la nature, chacun de ses livres a une cause à défendre. Ici ce sera les séismes, tsunamis, cyclones et leur prévention, et la mise en sécurité des populations. Ses histoires ont toujours un rapport avec la mer, élément si idyllique pouvant se transformer en enfer en un clin d’œil.

J’aime ses convictions qui accompagnent ses héros sans être un livre militant, elle incite à une prise de conscience.

C’est une romance légère par le côté peu attaché au matériel de Kaysha, à son insouciance, son naturel optimiste et enjoué, elle un côté décalé avec ses appels aux divinités. Pourtant, c’est une vraie romantique qui va s’enticher d’un homme aussi beau que rigide n’ayant jamais connu aucun amour.

Son statut est un peu déstabilisant, elle va un peu ou le vent l’emporte, profitant ou provoquant des opportunités professionnelles à vingt-huit ans. C’est un profil d’héroïne assez peu commun qui m’a gêné m’empêchant d’adhérer pleinement à son personnage.

L’anglais est à l’image de ce qu’on peut imaginer d’un aristocrate trentenaire élevé par des domestiques, puis éduqué par des précepteurs, et l’internat. Le poids de cette noblesse complètement stérile aux évolutions de la société, enfermant les descendants dans un véritable carcan est y très bien mis en avant. Dane ne fait pas absolument pas rêver avec son milieu, ni ses parents. Pourtant je le trouve touchant à vouloir se démarquer, se défaire de ce titre grâce son travail. Il est désuet, avec des manières empruntées, mais j’aime son potentiel et tout le chemin qu’il va parcourir pour s’épanouir. L’approche de sentiments, d’émotions, l’effraie au plus haut point, puisqu’on ne lui a jamais appris à les exprimer, puisqu’il n’avait pas l’autorisation de les ressentir et/ou de les manifester dans sa famille.

Le couple est un peu atypique, et a eu de mal à me convaincre. L’alchimie n’a pas complètement opéré sur moi, même si certaines situations cocasses, ou répliques humoristiques anglaises m’ont bien amusées. La romance à proprement parler est plus marquée dans le dernier tiers du livre, puisque les débuts sont quelques peu chaotiques.

J’ai apprécié ma lecture, malgré mes réserves sur le couple Kaysha-Dane, car la plume de cette auteure m’embarque sans difficulté dans son univers et ses engagements. Elle m’a fait voyager aussi bien dans des paysages de rêve que dans ceux ravagés par le déchaînement de la nature. Tout n’est pas idyllique à l’image de l’amour.

Great Brittany: exploring the Emerald Coast | Travel

We’re sitting on an empty beach, a wide sweep of white sand overlooking the emerald sea, and we can’t quite believe we have it all to ourselves. Had we flown to far-flung shores and taken a boat to a remote island, it would be understandable, but all we’ve done is disembark from the ferry at Saint-Malo and driven west for an hour.

“Where is everybody?” wonders my husband, digging his toes into fine sand.

“Looking for ice-cream, I expect,” I reply quietly, so as not to draw the kids’ attention to the fact that here at Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, there isn’t a kiosk, souvenir shop or arcade to be seen on the sleepy seafront – just a line of elegant grey stone villas with a sensational view. Our two children don’t seem to have noticed, thankfully; we’ve got a kite, buckets and spades, a picnic and our very own beach.

This is Brittany’s Emerald Coast – so close to the UK, yet it feels a world away. Its chic belle époque resorts provide a sophisticated seaside vibe, while further west the sweeping beaches and heather-strewn headlands offer a place to get closer to nature and admire the green water that gives this stretch of coastline its name. At Mont Saint-Michel, 50 miles to the east, the famously strong tides mean the sea retreats for huge distances and the same is true here. The spot in which I’d paddled hours earlier is now just ripples of sand dotted with cockle shells, while the sea is fast disappearing towards the horizon.

Taking this as our cue to explore, we wend our way up through timber-framed and turreted villas to Pointe de la Garde, the headland that juts out at the southern end of the beach. As we teeter along the narrow paths to a rocky outcrop, a superb panorama spreads out before us: to the northwest, a bird’s eye view of our beach, the vast white sand below us in a soft haze; on the other side, mussel beds, their black poles standing neatly to attention, and more headlands jutting out into the sea – it’s hard to tell if they’re islands or mainland. Beyond are the elegant resorts of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer and Saint-Lunaire.

The next day, we head northwest to Fort la Latte, a mighty medieval castle that clings to the cliffs of Cap Fréhel. The walk there via a winding sandy path is busy with tourists (so this is where they all are) but the sight of the 700-year-old castle is worth sharing. After a few centuries and some starring roles in various wars, the fort fell into disrepair and in the 1930s was bought by the Joüon des Longrais family, whose descendants still own it and live here seven months of the year (retreating to Rennes when the wild winter winds get too much). With its drawbridge, turreted tower and portcullis, it’s the children’s perfect specimen. We duck into the dark tower, then climb the precarious narrow steps up on to its roof. Castle locations don’t come any better, especially if your enemy is English.

On the way back to our hotel near Sables-d’Or-les-Pins, we spot an alluring cove among the pine trees and pull in where a sign points to Plage de l’Anse du Croc. The lowering tide is beginning to reveal tiny islets and rock pools at the far end of the beach, and we walk along the wide curve of red sand for a closer look to discover the rocks are covered in mussels. A retired couple in wellies and peaked caps are diligently cutting them from the rocks – pêche à pied, fishing on foot.

At the other end of the beach, the rock pools are even more fascinating; as the children hop between them looking for stranded fish, I gaze at the rainbow of colours. Grey boulders are festooned with bright green seaweed toupees, blue-black mussels gather in clusters and daubs of yellow lichen look like paint. Pink-white scallop shells are everywhere, bringing further adornment to an already beautiful place.

A local sees us admiring them and tells us the scallops are grown along the coast at Erquy: “They’re very tightly monitored to ensure they’re sustainable.” I ask how, in that case, the shells got here. “People bring them here to eat with picnics, and throw the shells into the rocks.”

While I ponder whether this constitutes litter, he says: “Lovely day, isn’t it? The view is magnifique when it’s not so hazy. On a clear day I can see Guernsey from my house, le paradis fiscal!” He rolls his eyes. “Have fun!”

Three days in and we’re yet to have ice-cream, so we head east to explore the resorts and beaches closer to Dinard and find the large Plage du Longchamp just outside Saint-Lunaire is buzzing. The trendy Le Surf de Joséphine beachside cafe is full so we tuck into lunch at nearby Alizé, serving not only ice-cream but traditional Breton cider, ham baguettes and frites. To walk it all off, we wander out to the headland at Pointe de la Garde Guérin, through bluebells and bright yellow broom flowers. To the west, the low tide has revealed more dark rocks and islets lining up dramatically against the grey-green sea – the view is so breathtaking we sit down to admire it from the grassy, gorse-backed banks of the path.

Later we explore the town of Saint-Lunaire, with its elegant art deco architecture and chic boutiques, and pause to watch sand yachts zip through puddles on the rippled beach. It’s Saturday afternoon and there’s a real holiday atmosphere – it’s great to be somewhere so cheerful after the quiet beaches on the Cap.

The same is true at Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, where we end our afternoon. The main street is buzzing to the soundtrack of an acoustic band playing an early evening set on a bar’s terrace, and we walk past restaurants and vintage bric-a-brac shops towards the Plage du Bechet. Tucked under the hilltop town, the crescent-shaped beach is backed by blue-doored beach huts and overlooks neat lines of small boats resting on the mudflats, while a sinuous creek meanders through the sand past the Chateau de Nessay, a turreted red-stone castle hotel, surrounded by pines on its own little promontory. The late-afternoon haze gives the low-tide coastline an even more ethereal atmosphere and I wish we had more time to wander across the sand to the other side of the bay.

The next morning, at high tide, we head for Saint-Malo to get a flavour of the Emerald Coast from the sea. Boarding the cutter Le Renard, captained by tanned Jean-Claude, we join French families to hoist the sails and cruise along the coast for the morning. The ship, a replica of the 1812 vessel owned by the privateer Robert Surcouf, takes us out in the bay where we can see Saint-Malo’s walled old town gleaming like a silver fortress in the sunshine. The wind is low so we can’t go far, but we pootle around the islets and Napoleonic forts in the bay, waving at fellow sailors on the traditional red-sailed Breton yachts and watching seabirds soar overhead.

On our final evening we walk out to the lighthouse at Cap Fréhel, which perches on the opposite corner of the peninsula to Fort La Latte. It’s past 7pm and the huge car park is almost empty, allowing us to stroll alone along the red stone path past the purple heather-clad rocks to the lighthouse alone. The angular art deco tower is impressive, but the old tower out on the headland has the better view from the cliffs that tower 70 metres above the water. A seabird colony squawks on the rocks below, and the sea is a flat as a crêpe.

As we walk back I gaze upwards at the deep blue sky criss-crossed with feathery plane trails, and wonder how many of those airline passengers are travelling to the other side of the world in search of a coastline with an appealing mix of attractive resorts and natural splendour. If only they knew there was somewhere so enchanting so close by.
