Stargazing
Renwyck drew in a slow breath, allowing his body to settle into the bed of grass beneath him. His hands clasped behind his head, the warrior gazed up into the starry sky over Stormwind. “It’s funny really,” he said, turning his head slightly to look at the woman resting to his side. “It’s pretty and all, but the light from the city makes it duller.” His glance left Aislynne’s face, falling to the grass between them. “But then again, maybe not.” Returning his attention skyward, his gaze fell beyond the stars to the black expanse beyond. “Maybe it’s just thinking fondly of the past. Maybe remembering how beautiful the sky looked in Westfall is just me thinking about how life was so much better before.” Aislynne had one arm tucked beneath her head; the sore one, which was mostly healed now but still achy, propped on her abdomen. Her eyes remained fixed on the stars as he spoke though she glanced to the side briefly when he looked toward her. Her smile was incredibly small and tugged up only one corner of her mouth. "It's both. That's just one of the things that drove me from Stormwind the first time I tried to settle here." She shifted like she would have nudged him but that wasn't exactly possible lying on the grass as they were. "That's when I met you." A quiet sigh came next. "But it's both. Cities are . . . stifling that way." He couldn't help but chuckle, his focus drawing back to the stars. "It was one of the first things I missed when I moved here with my father." His soft smile brightened as he reminisced.  "And actually, it was one of the things I loved about Duskwood. The clear, cloudless nights. Nothing like a brilliant backdrop of stars to make a land riddled with wolves and spiders feel a little more like home." With those words, Renwyck turned his gaze back to Aislynne. Her smile warmed and softened at his chuckle; how she'd missed that sound. What could she do but nod in agreement? She'd loved Duskwood, it was the only place after Gilneas that had felt like home. "I loved it there. But I was already used to wolves and spiders." She grinned a little at that and then gave such a heavy sigh. "I really did like it there. I might have stayed even if I hadn't met you." That brought her grin back. "I wonder if that grumpy owl that used to bring me rabbits and sit on my window ledge is still there?" Closing his eyes, Renwyck chuckled once more. "Because there's nothing creepier than a wakeup call from a bloody owl. That damned thing scared the shit out of me on more than one occasion." Brown eyes fluttering open, he smiled to Aislynne before rolling on his side to face her. "Now, that's one thing I don't miss... Owls: the roosters of Duskwood." Aislynne laughed quietly, only a hint of a rasp now present with the sound and only for a second. "Owls aren't so bad.  Most of them aren't anyway. And it depends on the kind. We had one that lived in our barn growing up, which is at least half the reason we didn't have mice! Especially when she was teaching her babies to hunt." She was quiet for a minute and raised her hand to push a few strands of hair behind her ear when they got caught in a faint breeze. She wiggled her nose for a minute to get rid of the tickling before she added: " I was more fond of the ravens and crows back then though. That's one thing Duskwood was lacking." "I never saw Gilneas, but I heard it was beautiful," he said, propping himself up on his elbow. Pausing for a minute, he took in her face underneath the moonlight. It had been a much simpler time when they would spend lazy nights under the stars of Duskwood. In that moment he was torn -- part of him retreating to the fonder memories of the past while the other part of him was painfully aware of the present. Renwyck's smile faded slightly as the pale light illuminated the scratches on Aislynne's face. With that, the present resumed its hold. "It was. Some of it still is." She frowned in an almost comical manner. "It's funny; when I think of it now it's perfect but back then . . . " She shook her head. "I loved it though, even then." She turned her head at his movements so she could finally , really look at him. She saw the fading smile and reached up to give a gentle tap beneath his chin as if to say 'none of that'.  "I would have liked to take you there. I go back a few times a year but it's not exactly safe yet."  Yet.  She smiled a little at that.  "Someday though . . ." He nodded slowly, the prod against his beard bringing a lopsided grin to his lips. "Hey now. I know I haven't used a sword in a good long while, but I'd still like to think I could hold my own against a baddy or two." Rolling to his back, he laid down once more to look back to the stars. Wriggling into the grass a little she turned her gaze back to the stars. "Well, you can tag along next time I go if you want.  I usually try to get back there sometime around Hallow's End and stay for a few days. I've never taken anyone with me but if you wanted to get away . . . " A knot chewed its way through his stomach, leaving a dull ache with the thought of promising anything of the future. Swallowing roughly, he nodded, his gaze not leaving the sky above. "I'd like that," he replied doing his best to fight through nagging pain. As much as he tried to force a smile, he couldn't. The corner of his mouth simply twitched in response. Even Aislynne knew better than to think that far ahead. They were, after all, in a world that was once again at war and her home had been used in that respect already.  "Well . . . we'll see what the state of things are then and . . . I'll let you know." She frowned a little and turned away to stare into the darkness for a moment. "It really was nice though. Forests and mountains and stormy seas. The city was nice we just . . . didn't belong there. We lived a bit away from everything really. " "Mm," was the only sound he managed to muster. Dozens of thoughts bombarded his mind at once, jumbling into a muddled mess of memories and possible scenarios for the future. Thoughts of Anna, his father, and Safrona all seemed to seep into one another until none of them made sense anymore. "Lynne?" he asked when his mind finally settled. "Do you think there's a future where we can both be as happy as we used to be?" Her response was to roll over onto her side until she had her sore arm wrapped around him. She hugged him as tight as she could manage and then she kissed his scruffy cheek before rolling back with a weighted sigh. "I hope so. I managed it once before so . . . I hope so. But I think we'll have to work at it some. Maybe a lot. But it's there, just out of reach. We just have to figure out how to reach it. But we will."

Reader's POV
"Did I seriously have to come?" Taehyung groaned for the nth time that day, as he trudged behind you carrying most of your shopping bags.
Turning around you gave him a sickeningly sweet smile, "Who else would besides my amazingly awesome best friend?"
Rolling his eyes at your attempt at flattering him, he retorted, "If I knew you were going to use this on me, I never would've agreed to be your friend."
Scoffing you teased, giving him a pointed look, "Well sir, you're about 12 years late for that."
Shaking his head, he laughed and said, motioning to the bags in his hand, "Ok but seriously, who shops for their Christmas presents this late."
"Someone who was too busy with stupid work and projects to even leave her dorm for a week."
Sighing, he ruffled your hair, cooing, "Was my baby working too hard now..."
"Yah, Kim Taehyung."
Holding his hands in the air, lifting the countless bags with him, he surrendered, "Sorry sorry..." although the slight grin on his face said otherwise.
As you two walked through the busy crowds, all buying their last-minute Christmas presents like you were, you remembered something that you meant to tell Taehyung earlier.
"Taehyung, do you remember about the Christmas dinner I told you about? At my parents' place?" you asked, as Taehyung thought for a bit before nodding at you.
"So you know since your family is out of town for work...Do you wanna come with me? For Christmas dinner?" you asked looking at him with expectant eyes.
He turned to look at you, he said slowly, "You want me over? For Christmas?"
Chuckling, you gently bumped your shoulders with him, "Well you spend Christmas with people you love so why not?"
Taehyung looked down, his cheeks dusted faint red as a small smile appeared on his face making your heart flutter against your chest at the boy who turned from being confident to a shy mess.
"So, yes?" you asked again, as Taehyung nodded quickly, grinning at you," I'd love that Y/N."
"Ok good! Well then that's settled but I still need to go to Bath & Body Works to get a couple stuff for my sisters and then we need to hit up-"
"Wait—Can we get ice-cream?" Taehyung suddenly asked as his eyes were on the Baskin Robbins store we were nearing.
Your eyes narrowed at Taehyung, as you pouted," Yah, Where you even listening to me?"
Giving me a sheepish smile, his eyes crinkling into small moon-shaped crescents, he said, "Sorry, I'm just really craving some ice-cream right now and I couldn’t help but notice Baskin Robbins like right here."
Wanting something sweet and cold yourself, you sighed and nodded in agreement as you both walked over to the store, standing in line behind the various people already there.
"What are you going to get?" you asked mindlessly, as you looked over the numerous flavors on the menu board. His eyes darted across the board as he let out a silent hum, his head tilting as he thought for a bit.
"I don't know..." he trailed off, as you rolled your eyes at his decisiveness.
Just as your eyes wandered off, you looked around appreciating the various Christmas decorations that downed the mall, really lifting up the Christmas mood that you very much enjoyed. After all, it was your favorite holiday, it also magically being the day you met your best friend Kim Taehyung.
But as you continued to look around, you found yourself looking at a familiar figure who seemed to be walking towards your direction, when your heart went still in your chest.
You've got to be kidding me, you thought as you stared at the man holding another girl's hand, smiling at her like she was the world to him, making you sick to the stomach.
Your ex-boyfriend
You started to sweat as you looked away, flustered. What were you going to do? What if he comes and talks to you? What is he introduces his girlfriend to you? You were in a great state of confusion when an idea crossed your mind—and not a necessarily good one.
"Taehyung-ah!"
"...Actually, I think I'll have vanilla..."
"Taehyung-ah!" you said again, this time a little louder, as you saw your ex and his new girlfriend nearing the two of you.
Giving you a quizzical look, he raised his eyebrows and said, "What? And why do you look so constipated? Do you need to use the bathroo—"
"You're my best friend right?"
"Uh..the last time I checked I think I am."
Letting out an exasperated sigh, you pressed, "And you'd do anything for me right? Right?"
Narrowing his eyes at you, he questioned, "Y/N, are you okay?"
"God damn it Tae, just answer my question!" you squeaked, as you saw your ex just merely a couple feet away.
"Ok Ok! I mean, yea I'd do anything for you, of course, it depends on the severity of the request, like jumping off a cliff...now—"
"I need you to kiss me."
"—I'm not so—wait what?!" Taehyung exclaimed.
Grabbing his large, but soft hands, you threaded your fingers together as you looked up at him, with begging eyes.
"J-just kiss me, I'll explain later!" you pleaded, tugging at his hands.
Taehyung opened his mouth, about to retort, when he closed it again. He looked at you one more time, confusion etched on his face until he said, "Y/N...I don't understand. Why do you want me to kiss you? In the middle of the line for ice-cream?!"
"Look, I don't have time to explain right now okay? Just trust me when I say you have to or else things are going get really bad and I-
"But—"
"Kim Taehyung, I swear to god—!"
"You're crazy..." you heard him mutter when your words are cut off suddenly by a pair of plush lips. Your eyes widen as the force causes you to almost fall backward when Taehyung's arms wrap around your waist, pulling you against his chest. His lips moved slowly against yours, the soft and warm sensation making your heart beat a thousand miles an hour, your lips hungry for more of his addictive kiss-
Wait, this was your best friend.
Pulling away hastily, you let out a shaky breath as you gazed at Taehyung, flustered as he was staring at you intently, his own face flushed and breathing rugged, mirroring yours.
You could see the stares and whispers of the people around, some looking at you with disapproval while others with a small smile on their faces. But even then, you couldn't help but focus on Taehyung, and how his lips had felt so perfect on your own, so warm and so-
"Y/N—" Taehyung started softly, his hand reaching out to yours when another voice spoke up, the familiarity sending a shiver down your spine.
"Hey, look who we have here!"
Both you and Taehyung looked up to see a tall boy with ruffled ash-brown hair, his eyes glinting as he smiled widely at the both of you.
You saw Taehyung tense beside you, a dark cloud in his eyes as he said flatly, "Jaemin."
Turning his head towards Taehyung, he gave him a nod of acknowledgment," Taehyung, it's been a while, hasn't it...What a surprise to see both of you here."
"Yea. What a surprise." Taehyung glared, as his hand gently grabbed yours and pulled you closed to his side.
Jaemin raised his eyebrows at that, looking up at you, his lips tilting into a smirk of arrogance.
"Well, since you haven't formally met, this is my girlfriend Maia," he said, as he motioned to the slim, model-like figure next to him who gave you a venomous smile.
The girl he had cheated on you with.
She gave you a quick once-over, her eyebrows raising up as they finally met your eyes. She said haughtily, "It's nice meeting you Y/N, I've heard a lot about you although I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed." snickering as Jaemin laughed beside her.
Your heart fell in your chest, tears pricking the corner of your eyes at that when you felt Taehyung's grip on your hands tighten.
"Funny, I was just about to say the same about your new replacement." Taehyung countered as Maia’s smile immediately disappeared into a frown, as she grabbed Jaemin's arm in defense.
Jaemin scoffed as he looked at you, "I honestly am a little hurt Y/N, you got over me quite quickly haven't you." he frowned, feigning hurt as he clutched his chest mockingly.
Your fists clenched at your sides as you began to retort back when Taehyung interrupted, seething,"Of course it wouldn't take her that long to get over someone like you, Jaemin."
Letting out a loud obnoxious laugh, he smirked, "I bet since she's used you as her little toy to do so huh? Been fucking you around to just get over me?"
That was the last straw.
You shoved Taehyung to the side and grabbed Jaemin forcefully, by the collar of his shirt. His eyes shot open, as the surprise was evident on his face, Maia letting out a gasp beside him as she covered her mouth with her hand.
"You asshole. You have no goddamn right to talk to him like that, especially after all the shit you did." you raged. Bunching up his shirt in your hands, you added," I swear, if you ever talk to me or Taehyung again, I can promise you the next time our meeting won't be this friendly."
As a small crowd of people had somehow appeared, you shoved Jaemin off as he stumbled backward a couple feet, shock etched all over his face. You spun on your heel and then grabbed Taehyung by the hand and pulled him away from Jaemin, his girlfriend and the nosy passerbys.
You were walking for a while, until Taehyung tugged at your sleeve to stop, grabbing your shoulder to turn you around.
"Hey hey...let's calm down now, okay?" he whispered softly, rubbing small circles into your shoulders as he leaned down to your level, his eyes gazing at you in concern. You nodded slowly before letting out a small sigh, your eyes fluttering close at his touch.
"This is all my fault. I'm so sorry," you mumbled as Taehyung sighed softly.
"If I hadn't told you to kiss me, Jaemin wouldn't have assumed those things about us and insulted you like th-"
"Y/N...It's okay." he trailed off, giving you a small smile before he pulled you into his warm embrace. He rubbed your back reassuringly, your head automatically snuggling into his chest, hearing the steady beat of his heart against your ears, calming you instantly.
"You know how you asked me if I'd do anything for you?" he whispered into your ear.
You nodded as Taehyung continued," Then don't apologize cause I would do anything for you, no matter how crazy, how wild, how insanely stupid it is." he finished softly as you pulled away, looking up at him when you captured the look of absolute adoration on his face making your heart clench in your chest, wanting to take a picture of the way he looked at you and locking it away forever in the depths of your heart.
Taehyung was starting to make you feel things you've never felt before, and somehow you were okay with it. More okay than you thought you would ever be.
Your hands with a mind of their own found themselves cupping Taehyung's face, your fingers grazing his cheeks softly and before you could stop yourself from acting before thinking things through, you leaned up and kissed him.
His chocolate brown hues widened in surprise as you pressed closer against him, your lips against his in a sweet kiss. But, immediately the realization hit that he wasn't kissing you back, as you hesitantly pulled away, your face flush with embarrassment.
"I-I...I'm so sorry!" You squeaked," I didn't mean to do that wait— not that you're a bad kisser and I regret it, it's just that I—"
You saw Taehyung let out a small chuckle when suddenly his hands gripped your waist, pulling you flush against him.
"T-Taehyu—"
He dipped his head down as his mouth met yours gently. You felt his lips slowly curl up into the soft kiss until you were smiling back, trying to resist the giggles erupting from the back of your throat because, god, this was your best friend, your best friend who had turned into so much more.
He pulled away, his forehead casually leaning against yours, his fingers grazing your cheeks tenderly as he whispered against your lips," You talk too much sometimes."
"I guess I do, don't I."
----
"You know..." Taehyung trailed off teasingly, as his fingers slowly intertwined your fingers with his own, as a faint blush dusted your cheeks.
"What..." you said back, as you looked back at him with your eyebrows raised.
"You're not a bad kisser either," he added causing you to gasp, as you hit his shoulder, eliciting loud laughs from him.
You couldn't help but feel a small smile tug at your lips at you looked at your bright best friend beside you, someone just became so much more and you didn't mind one bit.
