toxic traits - generation kill

let’s be real, we all have a toxic trait. every relationship has it’s ups and downs, and people’s negative traits play a big role in fights between couples. it’s not going to be perfect all the time, and that’s okay. a friend from another fandom inspired me to write this, so hope you enjoy it! 💗 also i’m too lazy to write for a bunch of them, so you get a select few.

Tim is an angry man, and the smallest things can set him off. This extreme anger can end up hurdling you both headfirst into a screaming match. He’s cruel when he’s pissed off, and he has absolutely no regard for your feelings. Instead, he chooses to say things that he knows will cut deep simply so that he can win the argument. He closes himself off and bottles every emotion up, leaving no room for you to help him. Eventually, he’ll reach a point where he can’t bottle up his emotions anymore. This prompts him to snap, meaning a fight can occur out of nowhere. He expects you to realize his faults and forgive him for his outbursts instantly, no matter what horrible things he said during the argument.

Brad is insecure, and he overanalyzes every interaction you have with another male. His insecurity runs deep in his system, especially after his ex-fiancée left him. He spends every waking moment reading into every word you say, so sometimes he takes things the wrong way. If he thinks you’re going to leave him or even gets the slightest inkling that you’ve lost interest, Brad shuts you out. He does this to protect his heart, attempting to spare his feelings in case you DO decide to leave him. This new persona is cold, unwavering, and distant; the perfect example of the Iceman. He doesn’t understand why he should allow you to hang out with that other man, he doesn’t trust him at all. Can’t you just see that he’s just looking out for your relationship. He knows he’s “a bit” possessive, but he believes that it’s for your own good.

Nate is cold and calculated to a fault. He can easily disassociate, almost like he has a switch in his brain that allows him to turn off all emotions. He’s incredibly stubborn, so getting him to warm up to you again can be quite the challenge. Nate expects you to know exactly where his boundaries are, and he does not want to be pushed past them. Pushing him too far often results in him becoming cold again. If you don’t try and break down these new barriers he’s set between the two of you, his iciness will end your relationship.

Walt is passive to a fault. He’d rather just avoid conflict, no matter how thick the tension is. In his eyes, if he doesn’t address the problem, then there’s no problem in the first place. If you do discuss the issue, it’s similar to you talking to a brick wall. He listens to what you’re saying and attempts to correct what he’s doing wrong, but he doesn’t want to talk about his feelings or problems. He also won’t do anything that would potentially upset someone else, which means he won’t block any girls that are trying to get with him. And if you bring it up to him that it makes you uncomfortable and try to argue with him? He’ll just ignore you.

Ray says the wrong things at the wrong time. You could be having the worst day of your life, and he’d try to cheer you up by using offensive humor. He has few coping skills and fails to recognize that not everyone wants to brush off their pain with humor, so he has the bad habit of trying to comfort you by making jokes when you’re upset. More often then not, these jokes send you over the edge, and Ray will be left completely confused as to why you were so furious with him.

Rudy accidentally pokes fun at your insecurities. Rudy will often point out if you’re gaining weight, and he doesn’t even know that it might be hurtful. He always tells you if something about your presentation is off, which can be helpful at times. However, it’s usually hurtful, and it can be hard to bring up to him. Once he realizes his mistake, his whole day will be ruined because of the weight of his guilt. He’ll spend a lot of time overthinking what he says. It makes the atmosphere around you two carry an air of uncertainty to it.

James is oblivious. He doesn’t notice when you’re upset, especially if you’re good at faking it. You need to tell him straight up how you feel at all times because this man cannot understand social cues to save his life. No matter how obvious it is that something is wrong, he won’t know unless someone says it to his face. The whole world could know that you were having a bad day except for James. You could be yelling at him, and he still wouldn’t know.

rant from drafts about brad colbert under the cut bc i love him

sometimes I’ll read a fic where Brad is really mean to his friends (usually ray but not exclusively) without the miniseries’ clear undercurrent of affection and i’m always ??? about it for two reasons

first of all why would anybody put effort into being friends w somebody who is so cruel/callous with them; that’s not a healthy relationship and im pretty most if not all of the characters on the show wouldn’t go for that 

second of all i feel like the miniseries goes out of its way to show that despite his iceman reputation brad is a great friend. the only other person that the writers put that much effort into showing as a good friend is arguably ray but that’s because taking care of people is about 1/3 of his character (the other 2/3 are being loudmouth comic relief and being smart as a whip). which is not to say that the other characters aren’t good friends or whatever, but it’s not really shown in the miniseries bc the writers prioritize showing off different characteristics for different people for time and story’s sake

anyway, brad is consistently shown to be able to pick up on how one of his fellow marines is feeling and tries to give them the support/comfort/whatever they need in a way that is palatable to them 

off the top of my head, he notices that poke is upset in the last few episodes and literally busts his ass to make him feel better. he is willing to defy command to bring kocher justice after he is demoted from bravo 3. when he notices that walt is frazzled after the roadblock he lays off immediately. heck he brings he hides chef boyardee for his team and doesnt eat it even when theyre reduced to one meal a day

disregarding shopping for the next two (as im talking writers intention and i don’t believe they intended any relationship to be romantic)

ray and brad’s banter/insults are mean in words but the key is that they’re not mean-spirited, i see it as essentially another way to pass the time. this be an unpopular opinion, but i honestly don’t get the fanon that brad is irritated by ray. how often does brad genuinely get annoyed w ray in the show? once that i can think of off the top of my head (pre-bridge ambush) but there might be one or two other times. their other interactions are either framed with amusement or concern. “shut up ray” isn’t a mean takedown it’s usually just a way to end the conversation and tell everyone that it’s time to focus now. also there’s that famous gif set of brad looking worried when ray is upset as well as when he defends ray when pappy lightly makes fun of him

brad shows himself to be a good friend to nate too despite the difficulties of the officer-enlisted divide. he notices that nate is feeling unsure of himself and his actions a few times and gives him the reassurance he needs. when nate’s command is being challenged for “insubordination” he reassures him that he has confidence in his leadership. i should note that as i recall he says the “far enough sir” line when nate shuts down a mission that the show made a point of showing he was excited about: not only does he reassure nate that he trusts him but he does it despite his probable disappointment of his one night recon being taken away. this happens earlier too when he’s complaining to nate about not being in the assault of baghdad: he cans it immediately when nate earnestly tells him that he’s glad to bring all his men home alive, listening/understanding what he has to say or at least prioritizing nate’s feelings over his own disappointment.

tl;dr i love brad colbert for a lot of reasons but one of the big ones is how much he cares for people despite the front he puts up and it pains me when people write him like a huge dick

some nateray headcanons

buckle up kids it's a long one

here we go

nate and ray adopt a baby called otis. he has brown hair and eyes, with a striking resemblance to the latter, despite them not being related.

in order to be fit to adopt they had to jump through many things - namely filling out a mountain of paperwork and going to therapy. this resulted in both of them being diagnosed with ptsd ("wow. I'm shocked" was ray's reply to the therapist. nate was more subdued, because he was well aware. no one in his battalion didn't have ptsd). ray is also diagnosed with adhd ("as the kids would say: 'we been knew'" was his answer. nate decided ray needed a break from social media for a while after that). they both attend therapy for 6 weeks each separately before the adoption agency deems them fit to be adoptive parents.

otis is 3 months old when he comes into their care, and probably the best thing that's ever happened to either of them.

nate likes to joke that this is ray's secret child and ray is just pretending to everyone that otis is adopted to cover his ass. he's not, and ray doesn't think its funny (well, he does, but he isn't going to admit that)

they both hate leaving otis with the babysitter when they go to work, but ray somehow really struggles with it. he tells his therapist this (he decided that therapy wasn't "only for pussies" after he realised that the adhd meds he was on weren't going to keep it under control) and he suggests that ray works from home until they can work through this fear, as the therapist puts it. he gets a letter from the doc for his boss to say that working from home for the next few months would be "most beneficial to Mr Person's mental wellbeing", and for the next 3 months, he works from home and works through his fear of leaving otis' side.

they later discover that ray's fear of not having otis near him is due to his experiences in afghanistan and iraq - but he lingers on the story of the girl at the roadblock when he retells the story to his therapist, which the therapist deems the main cause.

otis struggles to sleep unless he's lying on his stomach on either nate's or ray's chest. this means they wasted money on a crib that he's used a grand total of 3 times since they adopted him 3 months ago, so on average, he has spent 1 day per month in the cot.

neither of them complain, because otis has such a calming quality about him that it's almost therapeutic to hold him. when ray's having a particularly bad day (what he would describe as "the gears aren't turning like they're meant to"), he schedules naps with otis and just holds him. many times nate has come home from work early because "I'm my own boss, my boyfriend is having a bad day and I just want to hug him" and found them lying on their bed. every single time, he curls into ray's side, cards his fingers through ray's hair and lets otis hold his finger. these are his favourite days, and in some sick, twisted way, they are ray's too.

on days where they have to attend meetings or get together's, either with their marine buddies or with nate's "communist hippie corporate law pals", nate's sister, lauren, looks after otis. every time she babysits, she sends ray pictures of otis, because she knows how hard it is to be away from your kid, especially when they're so young. she insists that they don't need to pay her for it, but they do anyway.

nate gets home from work some days to find ray and otis lying on the ground in the living room, toys strewn across the floor, watching cartoons or reading him a book, and his heart swells every time as he realises he got lucky.

ray also has these moments of "holy shit, how the fuck did I get so lucky?", where one day he finds nate and otis lying in their bed, the baby taking up his usual spot on nate's chest. They're both fast asleep, and nate's hand covers the baby's entire back.

otis' favourite song seems to be 'king of the road', (specifically the cover by the proclaimers if its being played on cd) because whenever ray plays it on the guitar or sings it, otis lights up instantly, babbling away, smiling and clapping his hands. this is a great booster for ray's already massive self-confidence, because whenever brad comes to visit he can rub it in his face that "yeah, iceman, country music isn't all that bad!"

1. What was the first series you watched and how did you find out about it?

Band of Brothers. My mom actually got it for my dad for Christmas and it was too much for me to handle at a young age but in college about 8 years ago now I sat down and watched it again not even joking 5 times in a row.

2. Which series of the three is your favourite? Why?

Band of Brothers was my first favorite and will always be my ride or die.

3. Have you read any of the books related to the series?

I have read and own all three! Generation Kill is my favorite.

4. Favourite/least favourite Band of Brothers characters? Why?

Favorites: Momma Lipton because he’s everything those boys in easy needed, George Luz because his comedic relief kept everyone sane, and Bill Guarnere because that salty Italian was the grumpy soft glue of the company.

Least favorites: Cobb, Sobel, Dike because they were all incompetent assholes.

5. Favourite/least favourite Pacific characters? Why?

Favorites: Basilone because he is a fine piece of man, Chuckler because I feel like he is underrated

Least favorites: (I don’t like Sledge for most of the show please don’t kill me) I don’t remember many others to know who I disliked

6. Favorite/least favorite Generation Kill characters? Why?

Favorites: RayRay because he’s ripfueled self kept them all going, Brad because the Iceman’s one liners are iconic, and Walt because he is the most precious of all the babies.

Least favorites: Captain America, Encino Man, and Casey Kasem all tie for stupidest human being on the planet

7. What was your favorite thing about Band of Brothers?

The historical accuracy of the show as well as the accurate portrayal of the brotherhood formed during one of the worst wars in human history.

Also all the one liners were pure gold.

8. What was your favorite thing about The Pacific?

I really liked how it showed the true horrors of the Pacific campaign not just the warfare itself but the psychological horrors as well. (My grandfather fought in the Pacific and wouldn’t tell us anything about it).

9. What was your favorite thing about Generation Kill?

All of Ray’s monologues. Every single one.

10. Which Band of Brothers scene broke your heart the most?

Hoobler’s death. That was such a tragic scene.

11. Which The Pacific scene broke your heart the most?

Basilone dying broke me inside. Also pretty much the whole show wrecked me emotionally.

12. Which Generation Kill scene broke your heart the most?

When Ray snaps at Rudy in Baghdad. They were all so strung out and ready to be out of Iraq.

It’s got to be Points because my babies get to go home!

I’m rewatching the Pacific now because I honestly don’t remember too much. The episode where Basilone holds the machine gone with his bare hands I think is my favorite.

15. Do you have a favorite Generation Kill episode? Which one and why?

Get Some, the first episode started off great with both character introduction and all of Ray’s monologues.

16. A Band of Brothers scene that made you laugh.

The scene when they Luz impersonates Major Horton and convinces Sobel to cut the fence and all the guys are laughing. Golden scene.

Also most of Luz’s scenes are pretty damn funny.

Literally anything Ray said or did. He is my comedy baby with Luz

19. Did any of the series change your perspective on the historical events? How?

Not really, my dad, grandfathers, and uncle were all in the military so I grew up knowing what it was like so the crude humor and idioic commanders weren’t a surprise.

Band of Brothers but the Pacfic tried really hard in a good way!

22. If you could make HBO create another series, what would it be about?

Something Navy related. Yeah I know woo boys but as a Navy brat I would like a Navy series thank you.

USMC even though when you get more than one together their IQ drops to 70

do you ever like. think about Brad Colbert and how he tries to show so little emotion but also feels so deeply. and the respect and devotion he shows to every member of his team. and the way he looks at Ray when no one else is looking. like the way he looks at Ray in Baghdad and then after the football game and in that last scene, how it’s just like fond and helpless and concerned all at the same time, like he’s spent three quarters of the show trying to take care of everyone and it’s all started to unwind. his speech to Tony falls flat, Walt shoots the driver of the car, Ray is crashing, and he’s watching the entire war spiraling away from them. like he’s the Iceman but he’s not, you can see him trying to hold it together and he never really breaks down but. you can still see how much it hurts.

you’re one of the few people that can actually make Walt laugh

and i’m talking like fully belly laughing so hard you cry laughter, not little giggles (it’s pretty much only you and Ray that can make him laugh like that)

walt would support you no matter which military branch you choose, but he secretly hopes you’ll chose to be a marine just so he can see you more often

nah he’d let you blast whatever the hell you wanted to listen to in his truck, even if you sang obnoxiously like Ray and it was a song he hated with all of his being

i refuse to believe that Walt doesn’t own a beat up pickup truck so don’t even try and change my mind

he likes that there’s more to you than just your outer personality, it’s something that never fails to keep him interested in you

this man needs a lot of caring done for him so you better do it because he sure as hell will not

Walt is the type of person to take care of everyone else before himself, so make sure that he prioritizes himself every once in a while

a warm bath, a hot meal, or just some good old cuddles will do the trick (you must be the big spoon or let him lay on you though sorry i don’t make the rules)

he’s very stubborn when it comes to actually taking care of himself though, so you might need to be a little mean about it

he loves it when you run your fingers through his hair, so just do that and he’ll relax

you two met through the marine corps

he didn’t know you before Kuwait, but he was very confused when he met you

let me explain why

it’s not everyday that you see an angry 5’3” female marine go off on the infamous Iceman

it was a cultural reset to say the least

because no one, and I mean NO ONE has the BALLS TO DO THAT

i’m pretty sure every single marine, including the officers, would rather saw off their left nuts and let a Hajji kill them before they did that

so needless to say, when Walt saw you stomp up to his team leader and scream in his face about how he fucked up your Humvee, it was love at first sight

he was bewitched by the firecracker energy you have

the man followed you around like a lost puppy

he couldn’t help it, he just found you incredibly fascinating

especially when he learned that you usually didn’t talk much

Brad must have really fucked up your Humvee then

one day, he actually had the balls to approach you

you were sitting on the hot sand, crouched down to replace a tire on the Humvee

suddenly, just as soon as he gathered the courage to walk up, he froze

what would he even say? how could he start a conversation without making it awkward? what if he messed up and you hated him

you broke the silence

“are you just gonna stand there and stare at me like a creep or are you gonna say something?”

he just blinked, staring into your eyes

“can you teach me how to replace the Humvee tires?”

Walt was mentally abusing himself after that
