January Giallo Day 15 Twitch of the Death Nerve (AKA A Bay of Blood) I saw in an interview that this was one of @edgarwright's favorite films and then I also recently found out that this was the inspiration for Friday the 13th. Both are very solid reasons to watch this movie. I'm so mad at myself for not watching this sooner. This movie is so fuckin great. I can't necessarily agree with it being the start of giallo, since Argento released The Bird With The Crystal Plumage a year earlier. But this is most definitely the birth of the slasher. This movie really does have it all. A brutal body count, great practical effects, the story is bonkers, but not impossible to follow. There's also kill scenes that Friday most definitely ripped, but in a homage way. My only, and very minor, issue was with the last 2 mins. The ending was a little too silly for me. But it doesn't ruin the experience. This is definitely one I hope @arrowvideo does a 4K Box of. January Giallo Day 27 Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) Another Argento film, and no one should be surprised this deep into January Giallo. There's at least another two of his films I'll most likely be watching this month. I only watched this movie once and wasn't sure if maybe I was too tired due to work or what, but it didn't hit as hard the first time. I'm glad to say that has changed. It could be that I watched the US version the first time, and this time, I knew I was watching the Italian version. The practical effects are fuckin great. The music by @goblinofficial is awesome as always and the killer is genuinely creepy. January Giallo Day 25 The Bird With The Crystal Plumage This last week is most likely going to have a ton of my favorite gialli. There's no way I can do January Giallo and not watch the films that got me hooked on the genre to begin with. Plus, I love looking at all my @arrowvideo 4K sets. Figure I'd start with @darioargento_official first film. Definitely light on his later brutality and sex, but still one of my favorites. Subverting expectations a decade before US slashers were common. January Giallo Day 20 Eyes of Laura Mars Decided to switch things up a little and check out some American Gialli. I found this hidden gem. If you got anything similar to a giallo written by The Horror Master himself, @johncarpenterofficial. Sign me up. Plus the cast is amazing. I really liked this movie. It has a slight Dressed To Kill vibe, but I like that movie too, so I'm all for it. This is definitely more gialli inspired than a straight giallo. There's no leather gloves or anything like that. But the story was solid, acting was great (even though the whole psychic angle was a little silly sometimes), and the reveal was really good. January Giallo Day 18 Crazy Desires of a Murderer Figured I'd keep the roll going amd dip back into one of my @vinegarsyndrome Forgotten Gialli sets. The back synopsis seemed interesting enough. This one was ok. It had a pretty basic story and the death scenes weren't too bad. It's always interesting to see other directors for the eye ball mutilations, cause it still seems Fulci does it better. The reveal was interesting enough, but I saw most of the twists coming. January Giallo Day 18 Girl In Room 2A Another gem I see in many lost or underappreciated lists online. I was glad to see that the Forgotten Gialli Vol. 2 set from @vinegarsyndrome I own has a copy of it. Since I haven't seen it yet, and now is as good a time as any. I really enjoyed this one. It's a little different since it adds a dash of the occult, making the story odd in places and giving the feeling that our protagonist is an unreliable narrator. But everything links up pretty well in the end. The killer also has a slightly different look since he's mainly wearing red instead of all black. Which of course works with the hallucinations of if he's even really in the room or just part of a fever dream. Some kills are crazy too. With some of them involving torture. Obviously, by today's standards, it's pretty tame. January Giallo Day 16 Autopsy (AKA The Victim) @laceyofthedead and I wanted to go to @am_cinematheque's showing of Autopsy tonight, but unfortunately with the weather and random road closures we decided to just stay home. Since it was it was @cinematicvoid presenting the film, we thought it would be a good idea to just watch it at home since I own @vinegarsyndrome's Forgotten Gialli set. I've never watched this movie all the way through before. It's straight bonkers insane but so much fun. The story goes all over the place but it's insanity is so entertaining. January Giallo Day 14 Piercing Decided to do something a little differently today, cause if we're being honest here, most gialli are too similar. So this time, I went with a film inspired by gialli. First thing I got to say about this film: It's really weird but really interesting. It has minor giallo inspiration, using some @goblinofficial's themes was a nice touch too. The story did a great job of adding twists and being pretty crazy. I enjoyed it. January Giallo Day 11 The Fifth Cord Since I finished off my Yellow set last night, thought I'd dip into my Red @arrowvideo Giallo Essentials set and pick this film. It's been on many best of lists and it seems interesting. Definitely dug the Hell out of this one. The mystery is top notch and literally waits till almost the last second to reveal the killer. January Giallo Day 9 The Suspicious Death of a Minor Figured I'd keep the Martino train rolling and finish off that @arrowvideo set with his 3 gialli films. I really liked this one. The whole set is actually really good. This one is different cause they involve a good cop and some major conspiracies involving prostitution, drugs and politics. Tons of intrigue and sleuthing to figure out what's going on with the murders and also all the other things going on. The ending felt a little rushed in comparison to the rest of the film. January Giallo Day 4: Terror at the Opera ( AKA Opera) It should be to the surprise of no one, that I would eventually get to some Argento classics. Today I gave @laceyofthedead dealers choice and she picked our newly acquired Opera media book from our homies in @uxsxonly. Super jazzed to finally break in my region free BD player she got me for Xmas. This is definitely one of my favorites of Argento.
