Week 2- [Design Principles & Minimalism]

In this lesson we had discussed design principals and how specific design choices within a character can effect how others get a first look. For example we had looked at this photo stating 'Which one is Bouba and which one is Kiki' showing two different shapes, one which is rounded and the other with points. When looking at this, you immediately correlate the names to each shape, Kiki being the more pointed one and Bouba the smoothed out rounder one. This is just due to how our brain works as 'Bouba' is pronounced very smoothly, yet 'Kiki' is pronounced more harshly, so the shapes having those names just make sense. We had also looked at a few examples of different shapes within characters, how more rounded characters are nice and friendly, sharp characters are erratic and dangerous, how blocky characters are strong and reliable.

An example for this is the character Sonic, considering he is both spikey and partially smooth. The spikiness may represent his energetic and unpredictable side, yet the smoother more friendly features may represent his approachable and soft side.

An example we had looked at was from a book called 'Picture this- How pictures work' which illustrates how shapes within a scene can be manipulated and how the direction/emotion/feeling of the scene changes with these changes. For example, we were shown this page depicting 'The little red riding hood' in four boxes, all with differences changing the tone of each image. Looking at the bottom-left image, the wolf's shapes were made much smoother, making the wolf less threatening, yet the bottom right image highlights the wolf in a different colour making it more obvious, completely changing the perspective of the illustration. This type of shadow play applies in all sorts of media, it is especially noticeable in the game 'Limbo' which relies on its shadows within the game on perspective and creating ambiance/tone [considering it is all black and white], and especially when showing objects moving closer from a distance.

Lastly we had looked at stylisation of shape design within cartoons and how they use very simple shapes to portray different types of characters, even in very minimal stages of shape design. This is where our task of the day was brought in, to apply these minimal simple shapes to any character, especially showing the smooth, sharp and blocky shape design we had learnt about.

I had chosen Simon- Adventure time, and decided to represent him with smoother and softer shapes using the shape tool on photoshop. I used these smoother shapes to represent him as he is a very sad, soft and gentle character. Overall I feel that I could've tried better at this but as I had to use the shape tool to create him it was rather hard than freestyle drawing him in a minimal way. Another thing I found difficult is that his character was already very simple. Next time, I will choose a more detailed character to simplify to give myself more a challenge.
