Personalization is a big theme for Nike these days. “In our new connected era, Nike will lead with products that build a relationship with our consumers,” said Trevor Edwards, President, Nike Brand. “With NikeConnect, we deliver to basketball fans everywhere the personal and premium experiences we know they love.”
Nike’s high-tech gear for the league is called the Nike NBA Jersey with NikeConnect. The connected team jersey that takes basketball to new, cool heights with its own app a campaign using the tagline, “Tap in to the game.”
Fans who purchase and scan the jersey will receive highlight reels, scores, stats and exclusive content from and about favorite players and teams with a simple swipe of a smartphone on the jersey’s tag.

Nike, the exclusive supplier of jerseys and uniforms to the NBA, will launch its new jerseys and statement edition uniforms on September 29 on Nike’s NBA site, the NBA’s official store or any Nike store or official team store.
Fans who purchase an adult-sized Nike NBA Connected Jersey, which will be embedded with an NFC (near field communication) chip, can unlock exclusive team and player content through their smartphone.
“From how the athletes move to the positions they play — even their body types are completely different today than they were five to 10 years ago,” explains Kurt Parker, Nike VP of Apparel Design, about the “mad science” behind the R&D that went into new jerseys after Nike was awarded the NBA exclusive in June 2015. “That’s why we wanted to dramatically evolve both the performance and look of the uniforms.”
Once purchased, download the app, available for both Android gadgets with NFC capability and iOS11 enabled phones (iPhone 7 and above). After being directed to the “Team” tab in the app, fans can screen a status bar of a pre-game countdown to tip-off, in-game scores, or post-game final scores. It also includes information about when a team is playing next, and player stats.
App users can also access special offers—“Upcoming Rewards” for future game days that include exclusive licensed products, NBA2K18 boosts, tickets to games, Spotify playlists from athletes, exclusive kicks and more.

As TechCrunch notes, “The integration looks fantastic and the opportunity to get actual exclusive offers should be compelling enough to keep folks active on the platform that Nike’s created. In the end, looks like Nike has opened up yet another way to dominate in sports apparel.”
