This is Exercise 2a and it can be found under Patterns: Set 11. This exercise is a 16th note exercise in 3/4 that creates a 4:3 polyrhythm due to the phrasing and orchestration in the hands. The sticking is LRRL-RRLR-RLRR. I expanded the hand orchestration than what is originally in the book and added a foot ostinato as well. The feet are emphasizing this 4:3 polyrhythm with the left foot "splashing" the hi-hat in '3' while the bass drum is playing in '4'. The left hand moves from the snare drum to the high rack tom to the piccolo snare drum (turned off). The right hand moves from the medium rack tom to the floor tom to the low rack tom and back to the floor tom. It is actually a combination of two exercises a couple of videos ago, which revolve around independence in the left and right hands. In this variation, the left hand continues to play a clave (the rhythmic pulse or "heartbeat" of everything that is Afro-Cuban music) of your choice on a jam block or cowbell while the right hand orchestrates and improvises freely around the drum kit. The clave of choice here is a 2:3 (2+3) rumba clave. The right hand plays triplets for four measures and then the rhythm of two 16th notes to one 8th note (1e+, 2e+, etc.) for four measures. The feet are playing a songo foot ostinato while the hands play their respective parts.
