Flyer for gigs promoted by UK record label Piao! as “Piao! Club,” all happening in London, September/October 1996.

My fall 1996 visit to London happened in October, which is how I picked up this flyer for Piao!-sponsored gigs in September/October along with the October/November flyer I posted about earlier this year.

That Lois/Gilroy show scheduled for October 6th would later add The Hangovers—Gina Birch of The Raincoats’ then-new band—to the bill, as that is the one show here I was lucky enough to catch during my visit.

Another gig of note here is the Piao! showcase as part of the 1996 “Camden Crawl” (as memorialized via this CD compilation). Oh, to have arrived a couple of weeks earlier to see Broadcast!

That Trembling Blue Stars gig on October 15th would also have been a must-attend had I planned to still be in town. But, alas, the band ended up pulling out of that one, as evident in the revised lineup shown on that following flyer.

Time for another one of those "ugh, look at all those amazing gigs!" posts.

I had come to know Piao! as a record label first and foremost, but learned upon visiting London in the fall of 1996 that they were also putting together shows. I wish I could have hung out in London for all of October and November to attend any of these:

Oct 08 - Versus Oct 22 - Moonshake Oct 24 - Comet Gain Oct 29 - The Raincoats Nov 04 - Snowpony Nov 06 - Mogwai Nov 28 - The Yummy Fur (”free 7″ EP on entry”)

TBH, I’d have gone to anything shown on that flyer. And both venues are/were tiny. According to the present-day web site of The Garage, their upstairs room holds only 100. When’s the last time you think Mogwai played a 100-capacity room?

The one show here I was able to go to was Lois/The Hangovers/Gilroy on October 6th. I’d reached out to locals on the indiepop list and met up with a few fellow members who were also attending, or at least game for a pint beforehand. 

As the lone American on the bill, Lois was of course the artist I’d already had a chance to see more than once back in the States. So I knew she would be great. (She was!) I was especially excited for The Hangovers, a new band with Gina Birch of The Raincoats. And Gilroy was another side project of sorts, this one from Cathy Rodgers of Heavenly.

The whole night was a bit of blur, honestly, as this was my first time attending a concert in a foreign country. (Somehow I’d missed out on that activity on my first visit to the UK in 1993.) But among my indie pop people, I also felt right at home.
