Manga you might have missed #2: Platinum End

You have probably watched/read/heard of Death Note. It was a crazy popular manga/anime for it’s genius plot and characters (and for the manga readers: insanely good art). So what if I told you that the same makes of Death Note were making another manga, again with a great plot and a lot of thinking games? You would think that’s impossible, you would have heard about it. I thought the exact same when I was reading the wikipedia article on the illustrator Takeshi Obata and it said his most recent serialized manga was Platinum End.

So 1 reason this isn’t that well known is because it isn’t serialized in Weekly Jump but in Jump SQ, a montly magazine. This also means it’s harder to keep up with the manga because remembering all the stuff that happened a month ago is quite a pain. However, as Jojo’s bizarre adventure has shown, monthly releases are a godsend for illustrators. The quality of art in Platinum End is insane. If you love good art, this manga is a must-read, if you love mind games this is a must-read, if you love good manga, this. is. a. must. read!!!

Plot Summary

Sorry for spoiling the plot a bit, but i won’t spoil more than the  first chapter. If you don’t want to be spoiled, just go read it already. So we start off with a guy who is about to commit suicide, luckily he is caught mid-air by an angel who tells him he has been selected as a god candidate and he has to fight to become the new god. His weapons: angel wings, a red arrow and a white arrow. with the wings you can fly incredibly fast, with the red arrow you can make someone fall in love with you and follow your orders, with the white arrow you can kill someone. In typical Death Note style we get a bunch of complicated rules like how these angelic objects can not interact with objects from the human world, a red arrow doesn’t work on someone who has already been shot by a red arrow etcetera etcetara. 

Conclusion

The whole god candidate part sounds a whole lot like Mirai Nikki, which probably a lot of you have read, that is also kind of how it plays out, only a lot better. I think saying Platinum End is a combination of Death Note and Mirai Nikk is the perfect summary actually. Platinum End has actually gotten an english translation so you can even pick up the first 2 volumes.
