Old lullaby
this was written for @hdcandyheartsfest using the prompt "happy tears"
He saw the way his eyes watered, a single tear sneaking out and falling before it could be stopped.
“Harry? Hey… It's okay, if you don't like it you don't need to stay with it, but-”
“Shut up.” Harry took a deep breath and kept his eyes at the box in front of him. The cardboard box was filled with vinyl records, mostly from the 80s, all worn out and some of them with scribbles and doodles on the covers.
Draco and Harry had taken the task of cleaning Grimmlaud Place not long ago, agreeing that anything that was older than 20 years was straight to trash. Draco had imposed to clean the older rooms himself, those never occupied during the time the Order was there, knowing all weird dark magic artifacts would be hidden in those. There was no need to expose Harry to that if he was already a very capable curse-breaker.
It was in one of these rooms, though, that Draco had found the perfect Christmas present for Harry. A box closed off in the corner of what he imagined was supposed to be Remus's room but never got used much, because the whole place was filled with dust everywhere. Everywhere except the box. When he opened he definitely didn't expect to find a mildly obsessive collection of David Bowie records, but even he was endeared upon a closer look, deciding if anyone was supposed to see this, it was Harry.
Now, on Christmas morning, Draco wondered if his idea was a good one or not. Harry stood with hands on the opened box, tears on his eyes, and wouldn't say anything.
“It’s organized from oldest to newest…” he tried, staring at Harry to see if he reacted.
Instead of a verbal response, Harry lunged himself into Draco, making them both fall in the thick rug of the living room.
“Thank you.” Harry said, still with his head buried in Draco's neck.
“You would've found it eventually, I just wanted it to be special…” their hands stayed together even after the embrace ended. Harry went through the vinyls with only one hand, and eventually stopped on one with a woman and pigs on the cover.
“Look! You like this one, don't you?” Harry turned the record to him, eyes glowing on finding something he could share.
“I do! Would you like to put it on?” Draco complied, it was not his favorite, but had some great songs in it, for sure.
“Oh we have to!” Harry let go of his hand and got up, quickly putting the record on while reading the back. “Sirius’ favorite” he whispered. “It's Remus's handwriting isn't it? It has a little heart on the side…”
He handed the cover to Draco. The sixth track had little scribbles around it, including the words Harry said on the messy calligraphy of his old professor, and an additional arrow that included in a well trained handwriting saying “it is!”
Draco looked up at Harry, and couldn't hide the smile that came up when their eyes met. Smiles were so easy with Harry. Glowing excited green eyes and thick lashes was all it took for Draco's heart to be filled.
“Well, you have to put it in the sixth song now.” Draco said, already getting up and recognizing the track.
When the music started Draco extended a hand in Harry's direction, a silent invitation to dance. He felt the warmth inside when his bodies approached, and they kept the whole rest of their night like that: dancing in a slow motion, in an embrace with a sweet voice as a lullaby, a memory of the past but also an enjoyment of the present, and the reassurance of a soft future.

❥ Having a kid is 100% Frank's idea at first. He drops little hints about it to Bill for weeks. It's a slow Saturday afternoon where they're watching a movie together when Frank says, "Today's the kind of day where I wish it wasn't so quiet in this house."
❥ And honestly, Bill interprets that as Frank wanting a dog. Which makes sense. Frank complains fairly often about little creatures getting into his fruits and vegetables in the garden and a dog could be perfect for taking care of that problem.
❥ So he'd surprise Frank with a puppy and says that he's young enough that they could train him.
❥ And Frank is quiet. He's excited, of course, and immediately falls in love with the little guy. How could he not?
❥ Bill notices that he's a little off and asks, "Aren't you happy?"
❥ "Of course I am. I just– I thought that we could talk about having a different kind of small thing to take care of..."
❥ Bill's eyes go wide as soon as he realizes what Frank is implying. Needless to say it takes a lot of convincing.
❥ At the end of the day, what really tips the scales of Bill's opinions is Frank gently telling him, "Listen, I know you think that you and I can take on the world all on our own. But we don't have to. I want a family with you. You and I have so much love to give. We deserve to be able to give it to someone."
❥ Veronica is about five years old when Bill and Frank adopt her.
❥ She's a quiet little girl with curly dark hair, hazel eyes, and freckles that are speckled over her tan skin. And as quiet as she is, Frank really helps her get out of her shell.
❥ He gets really good at braiding her hair, especially when he learns that those are often some of the best moments to really bond with her. He's one of the only reasons why her hair stays looking put together in the slightest.
❥ Bill has a harder time connecting with her. Where Frank isn't afraid to get on her level and really get hands on, Bill is utterly clueless.
❥ He connects with her more through music. He pulls out his old record player and cycles through the collection of records he got from his mother. Because of him, Veronica grows up on Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, and so much more.
❥ Before too long, both Bill and Frank really come to see her for the ray of glittering sunshine that she is.
❥ In their own ways, they do their damndest to make sure Ronnie's childhood is as stable as possible.
❥ For example, Frank is adamant that they never fight in front of her; he never wants to give her the impression that they're angry at each other or at her. He also wants her to go to a normal school and be involved in normal activities even though Bill sees all of those things as more trouble than what they're worth.
❥ As soon as Ronnie is old enough, Bill wants to sign her up for self defense classes. What good will chucking a ball or playing an instrument do in a life or death situation?
❥ So her activities during the day alternate between various martial arts classes and dance (dance was Frank's idea; just so she has a little bit of the arts in her life).
❥ She regularly bounces around the house trying to teach her dads how to do whatever new fight or dance move she's learned in class. Frank loves that she wants to involve them. Bill, on the other hand, is on the brink of pulling a goddamn muscle but he smiles through the pain anyway because his participation makes his daughter happy.
❥ Frank is a complete soccer dad. He's at all the PTA meetings, volunteers for all the school fundraisers, and is donating supplies for the school all the time. He's the one who has their whole schedule memorized.
❥ Even though she's not related to either of them by blood, Bill is at ease when he notices that Ronnie has taken on Frank's sense of joy for life. And Frank has a good chuckle whenever she gets all grumbly and stubborn like his husband does.
❥ Their house isn't perfect and there's definitely growing pains between all three of them, but they're happy. They're happy knowing that they'll all love each other for a long, long time.

Today! Live @5 - Iconic musicians with history, and for the fun of it, I've got some history with some of them, as well. The Immediate Family, oft known as The Section, has played with pretty much every artist I've seen Live and played on most of the albums I've listened to throughout my life. Iconic barely begins to describe the legacy of Danny Kortchmar (Kootch), Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Russell Kunkel, and my 35+ yrs long friend, more recent addition, Steve Postell. Together now, front and center themselves, first with the music they created with, and for others, and now with new music and The Denny Tedesco documentary Immediate Family, winning festivals and soon to drop, they're doing what they love, loving it, in each other's great company. Happiness is...
The Immediate Family can be heard on albums from Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Warren Zevon, Graham Nash, Neil Young, David Crosby, and many, many, many more. Kortchmar, Sklar, and Kunkel have worked together since the early 70s and made up three-quarters of The Section, best known for both their studio and live work in support of some of the top-selling singer/songwriters and solo singers in the history of music, as well as their own acclaimed instrumental albums. (By the mid-70s, they were later joined by Wachtel). Collectively, these musicians helped define the sound of a generation. Talkin' 'but my generation.
Danny Kortchmar’s credits as guitarist, producer, songwriter, and session musician include work with James Taylor, Don Henley, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, and Billy Joel, among many others. As a songwriter, Kortchmar has both written alone or collaborated with numerous artists, penning indelible tracks such as Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry,” “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” and “New York Minute,” as well as Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby” and “Shaky Town,” to name a few.
Legendary guitarist, producer, and songwriter Waddy Wachtel has worked with many of the same artists as Kortchmar, as well as artists like the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, Randy Newman, Bryan Ferry, and the late Warren Zevon, with whom he co-wrote and produced a number of hit songs including “Werewolves of London,” which The Immediate Family has included in their setlist. Wachtel’s production work includes Keith Richards, Bryan Ferry, George Thorogood, and The Church, and he has composed numerous scores for feature films.
Leland Sklar has performed in the studio and on tour with Phil Collins, James Taylor, Toto, and Billy Cobham, to name a few. Actually, Sklar has the most credits of any of the members of The Immediate Family, having worked on over 2,600 albums.
Russ Kunkel’s credits include Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, and dozens more. He has created and co-produced film scores for Mike Nichols’ Heartburn, Joyce Chopra’s Smooth Talk, and New World Films’ Certain Fury. Production work includes Clannad, Jimmy Buffett, The Derek Trucks Band, Dan Fogelberg, Aaron Neville, and others.
Steve Postell is a seasoned touring and session player who has worked with David Crosby, Jennifer Warnes, Michael McDonald, John Oates, Robben Ford, and many others. He recorded and mixed the final 3 performances of Ravi Shankar, and has scored films including “Dying To Know” about Timothy Leary & Ram Dass and narrated by Robert Redford.  He has released several solo records, including the critically acclaimed “Time Still Knockin’” on Immergent Records.
The Immediate Family’s new EP Live from Telefunken Soundstage is a six-song live recording captured at Telefunken’s Connecticut headquarters on November 14, 2021 during a stop in the group’s recent nationwide tour.
