Palia
Right, so I recently tried playing Palia and i had thoughts to air out. I'm not typically a fan of MMOs because most multiplayer video games give me headaches and I'm just not the type of person that yknow likes them anyway. Palia wasn't much of an exception though it did take longer for my headache to form and there's aspects of it I did enjoy. Primarily, my decision to stop playing resided in equal parts in my usual distaste for MMOs and because the game is still in Beta and has a number of bugs/features that are not included that resulted in my overall lack of enjoyment.
What I liked: Palia has an enticing look and style about it. It's a somewhat soft 3D look and the characters have very animated expressions both facial and full body. The player character motions are also very nice- I particularly enjoyed those for mining and chopping wood. It's a good mix of keeping things simple and short while still having some detail to the motion that makes it more realistic. All in all, it's just a good looking game. The voice acting is delightful and the sound design is lovely, though personally i could have done without the sound effects that play when you're in range of a forageable item. I feel that for a game where your goal is to make something of yourself such a sound cue can be unnecessary. The clothing designs are very cute, as well. Not just for the player character but NPCs are well designed and have very vibrant personalities that show through with their looks alone. It's a fun and well thought out rpg and farming sim and I certainly don't mind the romance options (although i don't plan on continuing to play the game I was particularly fond of Hassian and Jel)
What I feel could use improvement: Obviously, this game is still in Beta. I don't expect perfection from any game, really, and even less so from a game in this stage. I had a fair share of typical bugs that I don't feel the need to go into, being as they're not issues with the base game and are just bugs.That said, there are features that I would hope to see from a game such as this that I feel could make it a little more pleasant.
My biggest qualm while playing myself is that there's a number of controls and UI elements that are told to the player but only once. Because this is a farming sim rpg, you have a number of tools at your disposal and especially when just getting started with the game only having their controls mentioned once can be harrowing when you inevitably don't remember one or two things. The simplest solution would be to have a list in one of your menus of previously shown tutorials/instructions on how to complete certain tasks and actions. Just having a view of your control scheme can be overwhelming so I often find that a more in depth menu that covers the broader range of what you can do as a player is helpful especially if you happen to take a longer break between gameplay sessions.
To me, the camera control is a problem. I was immediately confused by the idea of using the mouse movement as your main form of camera control. Since I don't play many MMOs or games on PC in general I asked my roommates who do and found that typically you control the camera with WASD/arrow keys or left click and move the mouse to adjust the camera. In Palia, both the former options move your character and the latter is impossible because left clicking already serves a function. It's an odd learning curve to swing the camera to an fro with mouse movements alone and admittedly it made me a little motion sick. Even their option to lessen this effect with a center marker didn't help on that front. It's also just a strange control choice in my opinion, as this isn't a game that feels to require such constant ease to change the camera angle. I can't tell if it was a bug, but it also seemed that when exiting menus the camera would snap to my mouse's current location in relation to where it was when I entered the menu and it was more than a little disorienting. Personally I would have preferred to have a secondary option for camera control or even an overhaul of the control scheme, but those that are already used to playing the game may disagree.
There are other minor things I'm sure that I could nitpick but many of my issues past those two fall onto one major flaw that I found with the game: I don't think Palia needs to be an MMO. At least, not in the way it is at this point. When asking my roommate about camera controls I told him that this was a farming sim type MMO and that stopped him in his tracks because, at its core, that concept doesn't really make a lot of sense. Palia talks a good game with a sense of community and whatnot but for a game with its visuals and core mechanics it puzzles me just WHY it needs to be an MMO. Palia only has one town and from what I gather doesn't intend to have others, the story that each player experiences makes it so that other players are less your community than the NPCs themselves and, further, there aren't that many instances that really encourage assistance from other players. Palia has no combat system or hunting that requires multiple people to complete and currently the only things that are improved by having more people around are things like fishing where you have better odds with more people. This doesn't track realistically but regardless of that it's not something that would typically be improved by group play and seems more like a created reason for the game to be an MMO rather than a good mechanic on its own merit. As a farming sim focused in one relatively small town the world you're free to explore is relatively sparse which makes traveling from one end of the map to the other a bit of a slog, and the idea of an MMO where you can romance NPCs that everyone interacts with is just... Not two things I feel typically go together. While all this makes it more of a standout, that doesn't really mean it's a good combination. What makes more sense to me would be that the town is your area to explore and interact with and separate places such as the fairgrounds are community areas where players can interact, post trade offers or ask for materials, and where the day and night cycle is turned off so that events don't only last 20 minutes of real time play. Another odd thing: The idea of a day/night cycle in an MMO and especially one that doesn't last very long at all (only an hour in real time). Typically in MMOs an NPC is available at all hours of the day and doesn't wander very far if at all, but in Palia even without shopkeepers present you're still able to access the stock of most shops which makes it even more strange that there's even a schedule.
As a cherry on top, your story in Palia begins with you being brought to the world by an ancient portal and being told that you're the only one to come through it though there are other humans around. It's a very strange choice given that while most MMOs make you the center of your own story, you also know that the game begins the same way for everyone. It would make a touch more sense for you to be one of many to have come through the portal, though it's always a surprise when it happens and they're always happy to have newcomers (which also makes it a little less strange when no one is THAT impressed by you coming through a portal).
I'm not saying this is a bad game by any means. I like it, even, although it's not a game that I have fun playing and don't want to continue. But the rift between what works between in an MMO and what works in a farming sim isn't quite bridged yet, and while I think that Palia has a fair chance to build that bridge it still has a ways to go.

salt: i agree and i hate how it was ry*ji stans who started the first wave of harassing g*ro fans when p5 first came out in the west, now they're going up to g*ro fans and saying its out fault atlus kept in the ry*ji punching bag scenes?? years of harassment and fics using g*ro as the villain for other ships and p*gor*u artists bashing on g*ro and now g*ro fans blamed for atlus bad writing. as if g*ro fans didn't also get screwed over by having him become sequelbait with no promise he'll return.
YEAH LIKE LMAO,,,,, frankly if it wasn’t for the fact that it seems like most of my mutuals and myself as of today are getting obnoxious hate asks over this shit I would feel bad for them but like. people being happy that akeshu is canon DOESNT mean we don’t also have major problems with p5r and atlus’s writing?????
like personally, I really think atlus just should’ve came out and said that p5r was going to make akiren his own character fully, with opinions and stakes. I think they really need to just remove the dating sim aspect. but ofc, atlus won’t do that. bc it would require them admitting that goro and akira are both mlm and have romantic feelings for each other.
and the other thing is, yknow why ppl aren’t really talking about the ry*ji stuff rn???? because it’s not new. we’ve already gone over this shit and frankly it’s not productive or interesting discussion. it’s literally just Bad, Lazy Writing and who??? who wants to talk about that????? AGAIN??????
on top of that, obvs I’ve mentioned before that l don’t really like peryu for a few reasons. however, I pride myself on being able to understand the reasoning behind things and thus get why a lot of people liked it. but the reality is uh........ while you can read parts of ryuji and akiras relationship as romantic, there’s nothing that makes those comments inherently romantic instead of platonic.
the reality is uh. even if part of the reason akeshu became canon over others was the fandom, at the end of the day the writers also made these choices for a narrative reason. I also uh. this is a personal thing but there’s always something low key homophobic to me when people act like a ship being coded or baited is inherently a good thing for those of us who ship it.
like....... yeah, it’s nice to be Validated after years of akeshu being seen as this incredibly unlikely thing, but the fact that it’s baiting will always hang over lgbt akeshu fans. we can’t even fully enjoy it because we know we’re being played and baited

Hey the Boyfriend Dungeon kickstarter is in its last 5 day stretch and their final kickstarter goal will make THIS BABE dateable!
Boyfriend Dungeon is a cool as heck roguelike dating sim fusion where you can smooch gijinka weapons and then team up together to fight with the power of love! <3
And despite the name it actually does have characters of all genders for your equally gender selectable protagonist to swoon over! At the moment the lineup is gonna be 4 dudes (including this bonus axe man), 2 girls and 2 nonbinary people. And one of the nb love interests was actually designed by the creator of hatoful boyfriend, who's friends with the people who made this game! Holy wow! Its kinda awesome to know that an old fave game of mine was made by someone who like..supports my existance as a person. Also the hato'd character actually looks like my Big Favourite so far, they're a super cool white haired mysterious ponytail grim reaper who is ACTUALLU SHY AND CUTE and HAS A PET BIRB!! I hope this game's plot is as emotionally engaging as hatoful was, i loooooove when a crack game has a genuine heart and soul beyond the silly premise.
Anyway axe dude looks real cool too!! There aren't any other big cuddly characters like this in the cast so far, im always happy when i see larger men being allowed to be love interests in things and all, yknow? He's hella handsome and i hope he becomes as popular with everyone else as he is with me! Aaaa i cant choose between all these great smoochables...
OH! And there's also even a platonic route if you just like roguelikes and not dating sims. You can also get a cute pet cat who turns into your weapon! Tho i'm hoping we can still adopt the cat even if we also pick a love interest. Imagine how sweet that would be, living together with your bae and getting a cat together and being all domestic cuteness and also everyone is sentient knives.
