sayer does a thing i like a lot in robot fiction where it uses artificial beings under duress to kind of interrogate what makes an emotion and where drawing the line matters like with the exception of one instance of speaker they all go to great lengths for self preservation even though they shouldn't "want to" bc as soon as you create something that is driven to fulfill a purpose either by evolution or by code its going to consider being deactivated/dying a direct violation of that purpose even if its not supposed to be self preserving right like you always automatically recreate the desire to live if there is a desire to "be" at all. right. emotions are just a way of processing pressures and communicating to ourselves and others what those pressures are and absent them living things still undergo pressures. like bugs and other non-mammals which is another thing i think about a lot right like "oh a bug can't love you it just wants food' we all just want food
