Eggtober 30th 2023

"Mimicking the Master": Fried Egg on Magenta.

Made a point of giving @quezify's style a serious try. Eggtober 1st, 2023 was a quick attempt to learn and practice for the most part. This was a combination of directly studying and experimenting. Eggtober 1st was more about "glance at the inspo, notice the vibes, make it your own." This was much more about "pay attention to what these techniques accomplish, try to copy the specific things you like, and then see if you can iterate."

I do still need more practice since I'm not used to this process but for a first, real, non-traced and non-direct study, (as in I wasn't trying to replicate a specific piece one-to-one) this went really well. Not 100% sure what I was going for with some of my choices, but the over-all impact has a lot of what I love about @quezify's style.

3rd Egg I did for the day. Queued for the 30th so I have time to plan the 31st. Not sure what it will be but I'm looking forward to it.

I hope @lady-quen's breadbugs love this stylized eggy!

And even though he's been tagged twice, one more ding for @quezify, inimitable, even while I study that style. The master of eggs. I've loved watching your work all month and I loved taking a crack (pun intended) at actually pegging down what you're doing. You're fucking amazing, Ruben. One last egg for the month! We can do it, bud!

But first, speedpaint.

You can tell I'm really not used to using brushes that are so opaque. I gotta practice doing gradients with opaque brushes like this. Or maybe I need to turn down the opacity on the pencil brush. Or maybe I need to blend my style and Ruben's a bit more?

Whatever it is. I'm somewhere short of where I want to be in terms of a style mimic. Not that I want to steal @quezify's style per se, though it is rad as fuck. More that knowing how it works and what this method of drawing produces is a useful tool to have. After all, half of art is inventing stuff and the other half is aping stuff you like, whether that's real world references or copying from masters. So I might need a little more practice, but the blob-tacular shading and the hatching and the use of shapes as texture are all definitely tools that are going in the tool bag one of these days. XD

Been an honor drawing for everyone. I look forward to next year!

Eggtober Day 31!! We did it!!

This is the first monthly challenge I’ve been able to keep up with and it was so fun! I can’t believe it’s over, ty to everyone who liked and reblogged my eggs. Huge thanks to @quezify for coming up with this idea, I loved seeing all of yours and everybody else’s eggs!!

"Lantern of Desire" or "The New Treachery of Images" : Image of a Fried Egg Carved into Pumpkin.

This is not an egg. This is not even a pumpkin. This is a digital rendering of the image of an egg carved into the image of a pumpkin. Scramble that around in your brain for a bit. In all seriousness it is National Pumpkin Day, so I decided to waylay the original egg I planned for today to make this. Carving pumpkins is one of my favorite Halloween activities. I haven't been able to do it as often as I want because buying an impermanent medium for art is not a luxury my parents want to shell out for and since I stick around to take care of my aging mother, I don't much care for my dad rambling about wasted money if I were to buy one for myself. So... Digital version. The last time I carved a physical pumpkin was in 2020, and only because the Honda people were doing a random act of kindness where they were purchasing pumpkins for passersby. Unus Annus was running at that time, so I carved a skull. I also attempted to do the spiral and an hour glass in an apple. That was less successful.

Completely freehand, by the way.

But since I can't do that this year, and since it's National Pumpkin Day, and Eggtober, you get fried egg on pumpkin.

Okay, you also get the soft boiled egg I made for lunch.

But yeah. We're nearly done with Eggtober! Halloween is soon! I may not get a pumpkin to carve this year, but I can still get pretty close. This is faster than hollowing out a full gourd anyway.

@lady-quen might have a hard time seeing the bread bugs when they come to steal this egg. It's so dark in this scene!

The pumpkin I used as reference is impressively detailed, no? I always love these relief-style pumpkins. What can be done with the full cut out style is impressive, but what can be accomplished with the relief style is just astonishing, no?
