Chapter 4
Yeosang glanced over at Mirae, who was still blankly staring out the window. She had been that way in the first few hours of the drive. He wouldn’t admit it, at least right away, but with the silence coming from her, Yeosang was even more convinced that she was that sad. Dare he say it, he was beginning to feel a little concerned yet knew that sometimes the polite thing to do was not to say anything about it. The music playing on the radio acted as white noise between them, and Yeosang was hardly even listening to the songs.
Mirae looked down at her hands, feeling the deck of playing cards in her jean pocket. She barely had time to think about how expensive the clothes she was wearing were - Yeosang’s excuse was that the Dior boutique was the nearest. Mirae wanted to scoff right then and there, but she was impressed at how he got her clothes that fit her.
Her thoughts were going back to how she left Yunho. How she left him unconscious in Yeosang’s apartment while hoping San got to him, or anyone at least. A feeling of guilt was setting inside even in the midst of the overwhelming feelings of sadness and rage. Was it even possible to feel like this? She wasn’t sure. “How did you meet them?” She suddenly asked.
“Who, my dear?”
“The one you’re taking me to.”
“It’s not just one person. They’re a small group of people, people like us,” Yeosang replied, glancing at her from time to time as they entered a flyover, cars intersecting above and below them. “They felt they were above the place we lived in, so they uh, how should I say it? Created their own little world.”
“So how did you meet them?”
“I met them through another immortal. His name is Mark Lee. I’ve known him for centuries. We were rivals for the affections of Emperor Octavian’s daughter, Julia. Amazing woman in every way possible,” A smirk crept up on Yeosang’s lips as he remembered. “I nearly became an emperor if Mark hadn’t intruded that one night.”
“To this day, I still don’t know how old you actually are.”
Yeosang chuckled. “My dear Mirae, age is not important, especially my age. When I met Mark again, in recent… shall we day, decades? Or at least some few years ago, he introduced me to a group of mutants he was friends with. Some of them are quite powerful, one of them, I think, is an omega-level mutant like you.”
“I guessed as much, if they thought they were so superior,” Mirae looked out the window.
“We’ll see about that. Sometimes, mutants only intimidate others just by mentioning their powers, empty threats even though they could deliver on it, lessens the dirty work but it gets into their heads,” Yeosang said. Glancing at the rearview mirrors, he noticed three black cars in a formation behind them. “My dear, if you could assist me a little bit, I think we are being followed.”
Mirae looked over her seat at the three cars that seemed to move closer while Yeosang kept his foot on the gas to drive faster. “I wonder who they could be,” She watched for any signs of movement from the driver’s seats. Mirae saw a set of small rockets come out from the lights on the bumper. “They plan to kill us. Do you know them?”
“No I don’t, I promise you,” Yeosang swerved a few times past several cars only for the three black sedans to be able to keep up.
Mirae shook her head at the sight of the sedans keeping up, one of which was already across from them. There were spikes that extended from the rims of the wheels. The car bumped into them, Mirae clutching the armrest. “They plan on destroying your car while they’re at it,” She said, her eyes glowing red as she stared at the car next to them. The tires exploded, sending the car skidding, the rear hitting their vehicle.
“Damn,” Yeosang kept the car in its lane. “Very good, my dear Mirae. Perhaps you can do something about the other two?” He said, swerving several times so as not to bump into the cars surrounding them to get ahead.
Mirae took out one card from her pocket and threw it as hard as she could at the other sedan that caught up to them. The sedan exploded, the impact of the explosion moving them forward. “If they’re your friend’s bodyguards, then I think they don’t want us coming,” She said, her eyes still glowing. “Not that I care.”
She eyed the remaining black sedan that was following them that launched a rocket. Mirae looked at both the rocket and the car, both exploding in the middle of the road. The remaining cars began to cluster towards them. “Apparently, they were everywhere all along. The way must be heavily guarded, or that they don’t want us going,” Yeosang glanced at the rearview mirrors.
Mirae stayed still, staring at all the cars in front of them. Her eyes were glowing brighter than ever as she kept her gaze on them, the vehicles exploding one by one. She glanced at the rearview mirror on her side, the cars behind them exploding one by one as well, the smoke from the explosions blocking their view of the road.
“Thank you, my dear,” Yeosang drove on through the thick smoke in the air. “All this smoke means we’re getting close.”
The color of the smoke changed from the usual gray and black to white as he moved forward. The glow in Mirae’s eyes faded just as the smoke began to fade, only to see that their surroundings had changed.
Past the wide roads of the highway, they were at the entrance of a dreary lakeside village. “This is where they live?” Mirae glanced at him.
Yeosang chuckled. “No, they live up there,” He pointed to the nearby cliff. There was a white mansion molded in the usual 1930s art deco style that Mirae noticed in the immortal mutant’s apartment.
Mirae noticed that the residents in the village seemed to dress differently, as if wearing different variations of the hanbok. The anger seeped in again, knowing that they were approaching the home of who may have been behind the explosion of the Danger Room, behind the deaths of Chanyeol and Hyuk. Yeosang drove on, down the route of the mansion’s driveway, the sight of the house growing bigger and bigger until they finally approached the gate.
Two guards were standing by and stopped them. “Name?” They asked.
“Kang Yeosang and Lee Mirae. One of them is expecting me by now,” Yeosang replied.
The gates opened on its own and the guards stood by for their vehicle to enter the grounds. As soon as they pulled up, they saw someone standing by the front doors, dressed undoubtedly like he owned the place, but also that he was strikingly handsome. One half of his coiffed hair was blonde, the other side was red. His eye on the blonde side was also blue, the other a dark brown. He was smiling as they pulled up, opening Mirae’s door.
“Hello,” He said as she got out, taking her hand and kissing it.
“Taeyong, quite a greeting you’ve got there,” Yeosang pointed out, tossing the key to the valet.
The male with the name turned to Mirae again. “Forgive my manners, or lack of. I’m Lee Taeyong and I own this house. It’s nice to meet you at last.”
Lee Taeyong was an omega-level mutant like Mirae. Taeyong was an omega-level psychic that could not only read minds, but could also control a person’s mind and manipulate their memories. Taeyong also had the extraordinary gift of turning into organic diamond, making him almost invulnerable to harm and giving him added strength and a psychic shield. However, Taeyong’s limitation was the fact that he could not use his telepathy while he was in his diamond form.
Mirae glanced at Yeosang and before she could speak, he shook his head. “It’s not him you’re going to see,” He advised.
Taeyong smirked. “You must be jumping for joy now that you’re on a drive with the apple of your eye,” He glanced at Yeosang. Turning back to Mirae, he let go of her hand. “That’s what he was thinking. He thinks very loudly.”
“My thoughts are not for you to read, Taeyongie, as I’m sure your brother has taught you that much. Taemin, where is he?” Yeosang asked.
“He’s attending a business meeting. He won’t be here until tonight. But Mark is here, I guess you haven’t seen him in a while,” Taeyong replied. “Come in, come in, I can’t read your thoughts but I can read his and I know who you plan on seeing. Don’t bother taking off your shoes in the main area.”
He turned around to lead them inside. The interiors were decorated in shades of black, gold, and white on marble similar to Yeosang’s home. Mirae and Yeosang followed him further down the hall and they stopped in front of two mahogany doors. “At least one of us couldn’t be read,” She muttered to him.
Taeyong opened the doors, leading into what looked like a parlor, with red velvet couches and chintz chairs, mahogany chests of drawers in the same art deco style, and a crystal chandelier in the ceiling. They saw two people by the fireplace drinking champagne in crystal flutes, watching a drama on a tv that was placed above the mantle. Mirae felt her heart drop as the two figures, whose backs were turned, looked familiar.
“They’re here,” Taeyong announced, making the two people turn around.
Mirae’s eyes widened, looking like a deer caught in the headlights upon seeing their faces. “...Baekhyun? … Jongin?”
The shorter and paler of the two, Baekhyun, smiled. “Mirae, Mirae, Mirae, long time no see,” He said.
Byun Baekhyun was skilled in manipulating and creating light and light energy. Baekhyun was also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, specializing in hapkido. Kim Jongin had the ability to teleport, leaving a wisp of black smoke in his wake.
“It’s been years, hasn’t it?” Jongin spoke this time, approaching her. “You look like you’ve been through a lot.”
Mirae still couldn’t speak. She was too stunned to utter a word. All this time, Baekhyun and Jongin survived the Seoul attack but had never made themselves known. “Hello to you too, Yeosang,” He glanced at the vampiric-looking mutant, who nodded. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” He said to Mirae.
“I couldn’t blame her, we haven’t exactly seen her since that day,” Jongin patted her shoulder. “Do you like our new place? It’s not underground like the Center, but it’s here in this little village, it’s cozy,” He gestured for her to sit down while they did the same. “Mark’s here too, by the way, he’s probably off playing tennis or something.”
“So, what brings both of you here? I doubt it’s because the weather’s nice in this place,” Baekhyun poured her a glass of champagne. Mirae quietly accepted the drink, staring at the bubbles.
“Don’t act clueless, you know why they’re here,” Taeyong chimed in, giving the elder a look.
“Taeyong, it’s rude to read other people’s minds without their permission,” Baekhyun chided. “Even if I already know, it doesn’t hurt to ask to make sure. They might be misleading you, even in that respect.”
“I don’t have the capability to be paranoid when I can read everything like an open book,” Taeyong rolled his eyes. “Dinner is already prepared, by the way, I’ll call Mark-”
He stepped back when out of thin air appeared Mark himself. Unlike Baekhyun, Jongin, and Taeyong, Mark was dressed in a pinstripe suit. Yeosang’s expression stiffened upon seeing him. Mark Lee was, like Yeosang, an immortal mutant whose fortune over the centuries led him to own a business empire that had bases in both South Korea and Canada. Mark had the ability to teleport anywhere and everywhere he chose while also possessing a strong telepathic ability. Mark was also considered a doctor among his peers who studied Languages though he barely put that knowledge of his to the test as he usually tackled his businesses.
“No need,” Mark said, stopping at the sight of Mirae and Yeosang. “Brought her here to meet them, ‘Sang?” He asked.
“As a matter of fact, I did. Ruined anyone’s pursuits lately, Mark?” Yeosang shot at him, watching him take Mirae’s hand and gently kiss the back of it in greeting.
“As long as it’s your pursuits, which I can tell is this lovely woman in front of me,” Mark said.
“I’m taken,” Mirae pointed out.
Mark glanced at Yeosang. “Oh? You have pursued her? This is going to be fun.”
Mirae pulled her hand back, seeing Baekhyun and Jongin’s amused expressions. “I’m guessing you’ve been living your lives here all this time,” She said.
“Well, yeah, since the Seoul attack,” Baekhyun nodded. “Before you two arrived, we were all discussing a business venture we were looking to carry out in the capital. Maybe you could help us out, Yeosang?”
“Me?”
“Yeah, Mark and Taeyong have the capital to build it on, maybe some added manpower would help make the project solid. Let’s talk about this over dinner,” Baekhyun said, gesturing to the doors. Mark disappeared in an instant.
The dining room of the mansion had a view of what was outside. Yeosang and Mirae noticed that it had gotten much darker, realizing how late it was getting. Mirae still couldn’t believe that Baekhyun and Jongin were alive all this time, that they actually survived the explosion from the Seoul attack, the impact caused by her own powers. She was still trying to process this new situation.
Could they have been the ones who tampered with the Danger Room? The question reminded her of why she was there, having dinner with them, with other mutants who were also quite powerful, especially psychics as powerful as them. Mirae could only hope that Yunho would be able to read her mind at the moment, so he would know where they were.
“So, as I was saying earlier, Jongin, Taeyong, Mark, and I are looking into setting up a new business venture and Yeosang may be able to give it the added credibility it needs,” Baekhyun broke the momentary lull when everyone else tucked into the food. Mirae poked around the courses on her plate as she listened.
“Is that what you’ve been up to since the Seoul attack?” Mirae asked, glancing at him from time to time.
“Yeah, killing monsters and aliens wasn’t fun for me anymore, I’m sure you understand that,” Baekhyun smiled. “Knowing that Taeyong, his brother Taemin, and Mark are businessmen, when Jongin and I found each other and in turn found them, the business world seemed a little more interesting.”
“What kind of venture is it?” Yeosang asked. “I’d like to know what it is before I make any deal.”
“It’s called Project Apocalypse,” Baekhyun said with a grin on his face. “Project Apocalypse is going to be the next big thing among mutants and non-mutants.”
“It’s more of a think-tank. People come to us for answers, we give them the answers,” Jongin added.
“What kind of answers would those be?” Yeosang asked in between a sip of wine.
“Political answers, mostly, economic answers, diplomatic answers, you name it,” Mark replied. “You and I both have the experience for that. Didn’t you meet the adviser to Chun Doohwan during the uprising?”
“I have. I killed her,” Yeosang replied, both Baekhyun and Jongin looking surprised at how nonchalant he was about it.
“She could’ve been useful to us, you know,” Mark said. “Oh right, I see. You killed her because she was trying to get to Mirae over here,” He added, having read his thoughts.
Mirae sighed and ate a forkful of her salad instead. “You know, Mark and I can read everyone’s minds here, except for her. Why is that?” Taeyong raised a brow.
“Psychic shield, Taeyongie. I remember Junhong telling us about it when we first started training,” Baekhyun chuckled, glancing at her. “If you can’t read her mind, her psychic shield must be that strong.”
“We can’t read everyone after all, it would be too easy if we could,” Mark chimed in.
“How is Junhong, by the way? Has he been well? He’s alive, isn’t he?” Jongin asked her.
“Very well. Fixed my staff the first time we met again. He’s fixed a lot of other things, sometimes without me knowing,” Mirae replied.
“The three of you go a long while back and yet you’re acting like you don’t know each other,” Taeyong chuckled in his place.
“It has been a while since we last saw each other. We did, however, spend a few years together in the Center for Paranormal Research,” Baekhyun nodded, finishing the food on his plate. “I remember it was me, you, Minseok hyung, and Tao that were put forward because of our fighting skills.”
“Do you have any idea what happened to them?” Mirae asked.
“No idea. I thought I was the only one left, until I saw Jongin from the corner of the street, teleporting out of that place in time,” Baekhyun glanced at her. “I guess the same could be said of you.”
“Yeah, and Hyuk, and Chanyeol. Remember them?”
He smiled. “Why don’t we go take a walk? Just us, you can play catch up with Jongin after,” Baekhyun suggested.
“Yeah, I’ll tell you more about Project Apocalypse after we pitch the idea to Yeosang over here,” Jongin nodded eagerly, exchanging knowing looks with the older male.
Baekhyun and Mirae got up from their seats. Mirae eyed Yeosang, who had a look of concern all over his face at the suggestion. She followed him towards the patio doors and out into the well-manicured backyard of the mansion that had a swimming pool with a diving board and several patio chairs. The question was still nagging at Mirae as a silence came between them while they walked along the cemented areas of the estate. “To answer your question, I do remember them. Vividly, actually,” He said. “The tall dope and the guy I remember you used to like but is also your best friend.”
“Years have gone by since the Seoul attack,” Mirae said.
“I know. It changed everything. It changed everyone. You with that streak in your hair, still playing with the same stick you always used to lug around. It’s almost like a part of you, isn’t it? That staff of yours?” Baekhyun said.
“I never leave without it. Even when I go to work, it’s with me,” She pointed out.
Baekhyun nodded. “I see. No matter how much has changed, you still seem to be the same person. It didn’t help that when Professor Jang died, Ino took charge and started to play favorites.”
“You were one of them, Baek,” She said carefully, remembering the nickname he would often go by.
“That I am, Tao too. Minseok hyung too. We were like, how should I say it? Like the four horsemen of the apocalypse. We led the fighting for the rest of them,” Baekhyun grinned as he remembered. “Too bad things went the way it did, otherwise we’d all still be there, cooped up underground with all of those simulations.”
“That’s a memorial now. A lot of things happened since then, at least to me,” Mirae recalled everything, feeling her heart sink further upon remembering Jihoon, then Hyuk and Chanyeol.
They stopped in front of a ceramic bust perched on top of a small pillar. Baekhyun looked up. “What brings you here, then? You didn’t know I was alive, much less Jongin.”
“I came here because Yeosang told me I’d find answers here,” Mirae replied. “Chanyeol and Hyuk are dead now, and I find out that the Danger Room was tampered with leading to them dying. I’m trying to find out who did it and why.”
Baekhyun smiled. “I knew you were going to say that. Actually, Taeyong knew just by reading Yeosang’s thoughts over there. He was thinking of what you were going to find out upon coming here. I can hear him telling me now. Yeosang’s looking out for you, he’s kind of worried about what you will know, and how you’ll react when it’s all revealed.”
“You know who did it, didn’t you?” Mirae stared at him. “All this time, you were alive and you never meant to make contact? Not even with Junhong? You didn’t even bother to look for us in the places you figured we’d be?”
The male chuckled. “For a trained assassin like yourself, you’re getting pretty bad at stealth, aren’t you? I’ve come across you quite a few times since then, but you never saw me, much less took notice of me.”
She raised a brow. “Well I never got any message from you. Not even a hi or a hello.”
Baekhyun shook his head. He leaned closer with a satisfied look on his face. “No, no, no. My way of making contact with you was through the tragedies you have experienced. Jihoon, and now Chanyeol and Hyuk. To be honest, I was surprised at how I managed to hit two birds with one stone with both of them. The tall dope and the music producer.”
“What do you mean?” Mirae had a feeling she knew what he was about to say.
“It was all me, Mirae. Jihoon’s death, Chanyeol’s death, and Hyuk’s death? It was all me,” Baekhyun revealed calmly. “I am the author of all your pain, of all the grieving you were and still are doing.”
Mirae stared at him, feeling a chill down her spine at the revelation. “Jihoon was killed by those Utopian cult thugs.”
He shook his head. “I had a little help. I met Mark around that time, and when I told him what I wanted to do, he gladly possessed the body of the man who pulled the trigger on your dear friend, the friend you thought of as a brother,” He explained.
Mirae was still staring at him, as if prompting him to continue explaining. “Jongin, you know, of course, teleported me there once Taeyong found out the location of the so-called safehouse you put up, saw that Junhong was creating a simulation room like the one we used to have. With his help as well, I was able to make a few adjustments like rerouting some circuits to overload,”
“I was actually thinking of getting Chanyeol first, out of sentimental reasons. I knew him longer than Hyuk, so naturally I thought he should get the first strike. Little did I know,” Baekhyun smirked. “It would get Hyuk too. I doubt Junhong had a clue that the systems were hacked. Taeyong and his brother run a tech empire.”
She could feel her eyes well with tears at the explanations, the tension she was feeling slowly getting replaced by sadness and rage. “It was you all this time. Why? Why are you doing it?” She asked.
“Because I wanted you to know the pain and grief I felt after that attack happened,” Baekhyun replied, looking her in the eye. “My family thought I was dead when that came in. I was thrown into the ocean from the explosion you caused. They had given up on searching for me, in turn, they gave my brother all the money that was meant for me. Knowing you made the final blow to those goblins, all of the trouble I experienced, I knew I had to make you pay.”
Mirae looked away, fighting back the urge to break down the more Baekhyun talked. He sounded so satisfied. “And now you’re all alone, Lee Mirae. And you know the best part?” He tilted his head as he looked at her. “Ino knew all this time. Ino knew it was me. Yet he allowed it to happen anyway.”

dinner at 8 - a representation of pure corruption...
There was a slight break in the monotony of driving southwards along the motorway, only the high speed of the drive creating difference , until she drives round the long downward curve that gives meaning to the drive and transforms it into joy. It is hardly surprising that when she goes around a long curve she lets out a sigh of joy and accelerates still faster as they begin to travel along the upward curve, accelerating towards the unreachable heavens. She remembers being affronted by New York, wishing for water to rise and flood the city, annoyed by the rigid chess board of lines and squares without a single curve. The line she was driving was extravagant which reduced the prosaic moment so that she felt able to speak about her day, transforming the moment as they approached the airport and drive under the runway, a plane taxiing across the motorway, the drive like a dance in the growing dusk. Anti-photons falling, beginning to hide the  countryside. She accelerated into the dusk crossing the flow of traffic into the outside lane only then the following cars melted away.  The growling noise of the engine. She told him she was thinking of buying a car tomorrow afternoon. She slows down on a long curve to the right as the traffic from another motorway merges from the left. Drifting over a lane to slow down. They talk about how much money she has,  she confesses that the long phone call she'd had during the afternoon with the bank, had left her much richer than she'd thought. Telling him she had thought they knew about the account but they obviously didn't. She explained it was in addition to the money they'd gifted her in exile. That she'd be moving some of it into local banks, they'll be sending bank officials, a director tomorrow with dna and finger print authorization and testing kits. She likes the way he doesn't care about the value or the amount of the money. She slows down as they drive onto the sliproad, keeping to the northbound carriageway and as the southbound carriageway bifurcates away to the right she accelerates onto the dark road to the north. He asks if its safe to keep the money. We can symbolically gift it if we ever need to negotiate with them. The pleasures of love are in its curves, its chaotic meandering, without which it would little more than instinctual drives, the movement of soft fleshy pistons, they were endlessly involved in the loops and strings of seduction, red threads of cotton tie them together. The dress fluttering in the evening breeze, a leather jacket lined with kelvar gracefully removed and hung on a chair. The gentle distractions of a bare shoulder, an eye looking at you from a tattoo, the deceptively soft muscles of her forearm.  The long straight towards the city, main beams on, 110 miles an hour, transitory things, allowing his eyes to watch the light reflecting from the glass and the intense focus of her face as the roads streams by. As she slows down on the flyover drifting down towords the legal limit,  she wonders if the people following them will find them [...]
Their destination is a double fronted three story white mansion, with brick walls around the garden and a carriage drive, she parks by the lawn, there are three other cars in the curved carriage drive. The house is 25 metres back from the road. The drive is lit by lamps set 3 metres apart along the top of the walls. There are manicured bushes, trees trained against the old brick walls, other shrubs and bushes set in the green lawn of the island. One of the brick walls is being maintained, some bricks are being replaced by matching antique soft red bricks. The rest of the wall is being repointed. There is movable scaffolding to enable the work to be done carefully and safely. A sign announcing who the company and workers are.  They get out of the car, their feet crunching on the gravel of the drive. They are observed by cameras, images recorded and transmitted.
The front door opens before they press the doorbell. His boss invites them in and takes them into her office. She sits them down on the sofa, another man, a colleague of his comes in and sits in a chair next to her [...] She looked at the two of them, the woman in black dress, leggings and black ankle boots, a multicolored necklace in pastel shades from pink and yellow through to blues and purple. Her skin and tattoos glow in the soft golden light, he is sitting next to her. She realizes that what is bothering her about him is that he seems happy though recognizes he is stressed. She takes the photographs out of the brown envelope on the table and places them in a row in front of them. They are photos of Park holding a gun shooting at someone who is out of frame, he is behind her off to her left a bag hanging off him. His face clearly recognizable. She taps the photograph with her finger "what is this ?" She is about to speak but he leans forward and puts his hand on her arm.  He asks in reply "What it is?" She explains they have video of you killing people. Wait she says her hand palm out towards them. Tell me why they don't want you back Sam and Park. He looks at the photo and then explains that he is very sorry but that things just got out of hand and... she looks at him, feeling slightly amused because of the way Park is looking at him. Park explains  that she has been sent into exile. She asks for a reason why she shouldn't send her back. They are both looking pale and unwell. "Boss" She heard the hidden pleading in his voice. Park shuddered. If I return to Japan or the locality, they will kill me and under the terms of the sacrifice agreement they will kill him. She put her hand on him. She explains that she cannot have that. Why?. Because my being here is conditional, if I had stayed they would have killed him as a sacrifice,  I can never go back.  The police there know this, they will never ask for us because of the exile contract. Why happened? Politics, turned into a war internal to the council. One seat of which is the police. Two or three factions targeted me, he saved me. We ran, were chased, we escaped, people died. The cost was exile or sacrifice. Sacrifice was unbearable so we came into exile.  That's it he said taking her hand, it's us. Fuck, the other man said. What do you think frank? He sighs, the noise almost echoing in the silent room. The sound of other people talking in the kitchen can just be heard. He picks up the photos and drops them back into the envelope.  Terrible definition. I don't know who these people are, any facial recognition software would fail to  to recognize them even after the upgrade. True, useless software. Your back at work on Monday. You be good. Whilst your here, nothing illegal Park and I mean nothing. She looked relieved. Thankyou... Jean, call me Jean. They have to call me boss. I think you and I can do better. Thankyou Jean. Can I ask how many died ? Best not he said, we are police and the Tokyo people are council. She nodded accepting his logic. Lets join my husband and Frank's wife for something to eat. Frank dropped the envelope with the photos and the and the video into the waste bin. You look like you need a drink Sam. I do. Frank smiled. This conversation never happened, there is no video and will be no photographs,  however silence will cost you 2 nights off or perhaps 3 nights of babysitting. We'll do babysitting Park said with a smile. i like babysitting, i used to have a niece... They looked at her. You have a deal Park. So on Monday... Frank looked at them thinking that had gone well. You are working on a long term smuggling ring and a financial fraud, both of which have been running for months and they are not getting anywhere. Frank is taking over some murders. I am ?. Yes, one of which is a particularly unpleasant serial killer. Blame it on Park... My department just got much bigger and you guys need to sort out some of the detritus so I can make it work. Your both getting promoted. Park follows her into the kitchen whilst they begin to talk to her husband and his wife. Can I help ?  She thanks her for looking after him for me.  She looked at Park surprised but beginning to see why he was happy.  He's my friend as well as working for me. I'm pleased you brought him back in one piece. Two pieces I'm guessing. Yes it's we... Her husband brought the tray of vegetables to the table. She could sense his amusement and recognized that the two of them were the cause. He handed the bottle of Chablis to frank who was looking conspiratorially at abigail. "Oh stop it." she said feeling irritated. They laughed. "I'lll brief you on the new roles and departmental changes... Ï'll show it to you tomorrow. There was a major restructuring going on whilst you were there. Incidentally Tokyo asked us to check some financial outflows. Really what sort of money ? Park asked.  She liked the way she looked at him. Some 3 to 5 hundred million vanished and they are trying to trace it. Park looked amused, well we haven't got it... Abigail asked her about the dress. We went shopping yesterday and I bought this and some other clothes. Since we are staying here I thought I had better buy a wardrobe.  It's a lovely dress. How could you afford it ? She looked embarrassed after asking. Park smiled at her,  it's OK. I'm quite rich. Since I've moved here permanently I brought some money with me. I have to work out what to do with it.  Park shifted in her seat slightly towards him. He dropped the glass, she caught it spilling a little white wine onto her dress.  She hands the glass and what remains of its contents back to him. Not even aware of the surprise, perhaps even shock at the reaction they witnessed. We have the bank coming round in the morning. She says answering Jean and her husbands unspoken question. She turned back towards Abigail, conscious that they are all looking at her. Thinking this is a good time to confess that she is now becoming part of the reason, ideology of the bourgeois project.  I also own part of a company, Kawabarti, through a holding company. Now that I'm here, will have to get involved in running it.  Kawabarti, aren't they going IPO soon ? They were. I'll stop that until I know they have done nothing which is illegal, I don't want anyone to arrest me because I've been a silent investor, now that I live here. I suppose I shouldn't say that because I'm at a table with police. But its supposed to be absolutely legal and now that I live here with you, he was still looking pale, drink she said, her hand on his arm,  its ok.  I have to make sure it is... I thought I was going to faint with shock just then.  I don't want to complicate the experiment better to get all the trivial problematics out in public. Fair, i think the amount of money is a bit of a shock he said.  Experiment ? Jean asked, fascinated by the way they were being. He looked at Park. She nodded, Go ahead.  We committed to a year to see if we could live together. We thought we could run it as an experiment, I am very hopeful, though this bit of chaos. I would have told you today anyway about this.
Out there the enemy awaits them as they circle round during the sorties, perhaps they are paying a distant homage to earlier dogfights, the bend in the nights landscape,  the engine growling in the black night, three digits on the speedometer, in the distance a storm flashes, forks heading down towards the ground. Not caught unawares they race towards the motorway junction that will take them north, lightening flashes. The junction lit by a flash of lightening on its far side like a flash from a giants  camera. The lights are off at the junction. They follow the curve of the slip road, slower now as they run into a wall of rain. The road shimmers in the rain, water washing away the day. The better to make them feel, the the caress of his had stroking and holding her leg, a page turns as we read a book in the domestic space, is the caress erotic? She doesn't know. She lacks knowledge of such things she thinks, having spent too much time killing people to know. Later, in the not to distant future he will say to her that reactionaries cannot understand a thing like a caress because for them its always about power. But in the here and now as she accelerates up the hill onto the orbital she has no goal but the pleasure of the hand on her thigh and a successfully navigated bend,  and here she smiles as we have avoided another violent ending. Nothing beyond the  smile it brings to her lips,  one that he thinks resembles happiness. If we could live our lives likes this, successfully negotiating curves we could be happy...
[ ...well that was interesting her husband said. Jean looked at him quizzically.  He'll never cheat on her. Pouring vodka shots into crystal glasses. She'd probably kill him if he did. The four of them laughed. More seriously if we betrayed him after this, she'd kill us as well Frank said, i do like her [...] they talked about them sipping the vodka and drinking tea and espresso into the middle of the night [...] They sent a sealed file from her yesterday,  it was sensibly passed to me unread, it's heavily redacted but enough to know who and what she is, it makes interesting reading. He probably doesn't know, nor even care based on this evening,  Abigail interjected. They have asked us keep tabs on her and him. I think they are frightened in case she goes back. Thank you she said to her, I needed someone else's opinion.  Her husband wondered how much money she'd brought with her. This was the only way I could think of to stop them running. I will destroy the file, thank them for it and tell them we will deal with it...]

Atlanta’s bias toward driving, on our roads and in the media
This is Moreland Avenue, just north of Little Five Points. My smartphone camera isn’t great at night, so you may have to trust me: there’s a sidewalk over to the left.  Notice the streetlights facing away from the sidewalk and toward the cars that really don’t need them, leaving pedestrians in the dark.  (Note: Moreland is a state road, which comes with its own set of issues.)
Tumblr media
This is one of the many little (and big) ways we favor automobiles as mobility, with “death by a thousand cuts” going to people on foot.
I took this photo on a recent evening while my wife and son and I were walking back from a shopping trip. We took the Freedom Path multi-use trail which ended up having  almost no lighting – unlike Freedom Parkway (the road that runs beside it) which was well-lit. We ended up getting off the Path and walking a much longer route just to get some lights.
I don’t think we passed more than five pedestrians on our long trip, and it’s no wonder why. As a city, we’ve designed ourselves into car dependency. How many times are Atlantans in this situation where we suffer the indignities of car-focused design? Quite a lot, I'm sure. Do we really think about it in terms of change? And who could make that change happen? The danger is in accepting the status quo as inevitable.
The 285/400 interchange: why is the AJC not mentioning induced demand?
Tumblr media
Here’s an example of how that automobile bias works its way into the news media. Check out this recent AJC article: Major work begins on one of metro Atlanta’s worst traffic bottlenecks.
Construction has begun in earnest on a fix for one of metro Atlanta’s worst traffic bottlenecks. The new I-285 interchange at Ga. 400 will take almost three more years to complete. When it’s done, state transportation officials say it will make commuting easier for hundreds of thousands of people...GDOT’s solution is to completely rebuild the interchange with a series of new collector-distributor lanes and flyover ramps that will carry more vehicles
If this article was about rail-transit expansion, the AJC would've likely gotten a quote from some anti-rail quack like Randal O’Toole as “balance” for the issue, as if we can't just accept new high-speed public transportation as a good thing.  Or maybe they'd have gotten one from  David Hancock, chairman of the United Tea Party of Georgia, about the expense of transit. Or one from noted rail-transit critic Wendell Cox.
But since it’s about highway expansion for cars, this article basically a press release for the Georgia Department of Transportation, without a single mention of the induced demand effect.
In 2015, California’s DOT admitted a fact that had become more and more supported by data: congestion relief on major roads is a dubious pursuit, in which added capacity for cars induces more car trips.
The fact that the AJC didn’t mention it is a demonstration of another one of the little ways we express favoritism toward driving. (Notable: a Google search on AJC.com shows that the only time “induced demand” has ever showed up in the text of a post is in the comments section.)
Tip of the iceberg
These two examples are obviously just a small part of the problem. Parking requirements for new construction (notice that we have no bus-shelter requirements for new developments that are built on bus lines), media reports on pedestrian deaths that shame pedestrians by focusing on whether or not they were in a crosswalk (even where crosswalks don’t exist) – there are many little cuts happening all the time.
Try to notice when this happens around you. Notice when a reporter or a developer or a politician is looking at Atlanta with a car-windshield perspective and invalidating the concerns of transit riders and cyclists and pedestrians. Push back. Pushing back and challenging the assumptions of car-centric behavior may be the only way to heal the wounds and create a healthier place.

The big troika of smartphone navigation apps are Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps. I believe that recently Apple has brought its map app up to parity and then some.
On November 28, 2007, Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 was released. On September 23, 2008, coinciding with the release of the first Android device. Google then broadened its market with an Android version. And not to be left out in the cold, Apple inevitably adopted a version of Google Maps.
With the announcement of iOS 6 in June 2012, Apple took a leap of faith and debuted their own Apple Maps service.
It was obvious that Apple’s initial foray into the maps app market was amateur, at best (perhaps a preschooler led the development team). And it remained that way for a long time.
Google had it all over them for many years. And recently Waze has entered the market with the introduction of crowdsourcing traffic conditions in real time.
It was great to have a GPS system within your smartphone. (BTW, do we really need to call them smartphones? Why can’t we simply say that we have our computer with us. Let’s agree that all others have flip phones or coffee cans with twine.)
Being a fanboi, I quickly moved to Apple Maps when it was released. What a mess. Routes seemingly suggested by a sadomasochist, seeing if you would follow on a dare. But I went with it for awhile, inevitably switching back to Google to relieve the pain.
As I said, Waze has recently appeared bringing with it the concept of incorporating crowdsourcing, a new concept to a staid maps market.
But now we’re on iOS 12 and Apple has given Maps a huge dose of love. Under the ‘rules’ which the market operates, Apple ‘borrowed’ a number of functions from each competitor. And as is typically Apple, I argue that they have done an excellent job of finessing them.
Maps is being rebuilt from the ground up to better reflect the world around you. The new underlying map uses Apple data and features enhanced geographic context like pedestrian paths and parks, more detailed building outlines and parking lots, better road network coverage, and more. You’ll also be able to get where you’re going with improved routes, whether you’re on the road or on foot.
In the beginning they were the map app with training wheels (one of them broken, at that). And it took them a fair amount of time to get where they are now. But I feel that it paid off.
With the release of iOS 12, I have found myself back with the greatly improved Apple Maps and elated with my choice, without any measure of guilt.
There’s Flyovers, Indoor Maps (great at airports), Public Transit info, a host of other things including sharing your maps on all of your devices. Even though it’s been around for a while, I particularly like the last feature when I receive a last minute call while at my desktop. Find the location that I have never been to before and send the directions over to one of my mobile device’s immediately is a time saver.
(My guess is that Apple used it’s time-honored technique that goes back to the iPod. Use buyers as your test subjects. Listen to what buyers like about their competition’s devices/apps, discern what they don’t like, and pay special attention to their wish lists. Finally, address all three issues then put Apple’s twist on it.)
As for the UI, the three are roughly the same. But to my eye, Apple’s graphics look a bit more polished. One example, it appears to me that they list more landmarks (which is very important to me when driving as I can’t remember street names but can instantly remember visual clues).
Another example would be the header that shows you what lanes to use or not to use. Google chose green for their background color. I found Apple’s black background much easier to see at a glance, particularly in daylight.
I also found Apple Maps co-pilot much more valuable. It alerts me two miles before my next turn, then one mile, then half a mile, and so on. It won’t let me forget that I have to take action but soon.
It also lists the exit number in the header as the others. I was surprised, however, because knowing my route and destination, it listed my exit four exits prior to reaching it!
It has all the basic features that you find on the other map apps: places to grab some grub, gas stations, banking services, etc. The only thing that I could ask for is that they would ‘borrow’ Waze’s crowdsourcing. Face it, this is the gem that put Waze so much in demand.
Apple’s detection of congestion has grown by leaps and bounds. On one of my recent excursions, Siri informed me that there was an accident up ahead but that the route that I was on would still be the fastest route to reach my destination.
Compare that to several years back when it would send one on a mind-boggling knot of back roads that would cause you to drive an extra dozen or so miles!
So, that’s my USD $.02. I’m sure that there are plenty of you that are calling me many different names at this moment. Everyone seems to have their preferred map app.
But from my experience, Apple created a map app “for the rest of us” and I’m more than satisfied with the results.

SUSTAINING AMOSUN’S DEVELOPMENTAL STRIDES IN OGUN
Tumblr media
Kazeem Olagoke
After the storm come the calm is a popular adage that better explain the joy and excitement that are ultimately accompanying the well thought-out policy action and infrastructural investment in Ogun State under the administration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the last seven years.
Despite the cacophony of noise emanating from different axis when the rebuilding mission started, Amosun kept his vision alive and with the dexterity and focus of a pilot cruising through turbulent cloud, he simply gave his all to the worthy course of steering a new path for the prosperity and greatness of Gateway State.
Since he assumed office about 2,725 days ago, Amosun has never hesitated to make it clear that his administration is about mission to re-build. The concept of re-building in policy terms assume that there are structures on ground to be rebuild. Another assumption for the “rebuilding” concept is that structures on ground are in a state of despair, disuse or outdated as not to serve present and modern realities or incapable of serving projected future needs.
Certainly prior to the coming of Amosun administration many existing structures in all sectors suffer from these shortcomings in areas like provisions of water, roads and educational facilities. That situation was further compounded by an almost paralysis of governance in the last year or so of the last administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel following a protracted face-off between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Apparently, based on the above Amosun was on point in undertaken great social and economic experiment, noble in motive and far-reaching in purpose that anyone nursing ambition of succeeding him must be ready to sustain. Perhaps, the most interesting thing about Amosun feat is that his works speak for him. You need not tell lie in the effort to highlight his performances. Without doubt, a lot has changed since the governor came on board about 2,725 days ago. What is most visible and generating excitement among the indigenes/residents of ogun is the fact that Ogun State is on the fast track towards bridging its infrastructural deficit. The rebuilding work has impacted positively in different sectors of the State’s economy.
Unarguably, the government was challenged to invest heavily in infrastructural and rural development. This is a critical component of the ‘Mission to Rebuild’ in terms of creating an environment that supports industry and commerce as well as enabling inclusive economic growth. Over the past seven years, several hundreds of kilometres of roads have been constructed, expanded and resurfaced. The vision of the government is to create an environment that enables businesses to thrive, attracts investment and opens up new (and existing) areas for growth.
The Amosun government constructed the Ibara-Totoro Road, the first international standard six-lane road in the State. It built the flyover at Ibara, Abeokuta, also the first constructed by any administration since the creation of the State in 1976. The   first 10-lane boulevard, which begins at Sokori and opens up into the elaborate Itoku Bridge, is a stamp of modernisation affixed to the state capital by the current administration.
The Amosun government brought to reality the Mobalufon overhead bridge in Ijebu Ode, which had been in the master plan of the State for decades, thus closing the slaughter-slab at the Mobalufon end of the Sagamu-Benin Road. Other overhead bridges in Sabo, Sagamu, Lagos Garage in Ijebu Ode, Sapon and Iyana Mortuary in Abeokuta have been completed and commissioned while work is ongoing in those at Ijebu Igbo and Ilaro.
The Amosun administration constructed the longest road, cutting across four local councils in Ogun West Senatorial District, the 107km Ilara-Ijoun Road. It ended the distress of commuters in and across Ado-Odo Ota Local Council through massive reconstruction of the strategically-located and commercially-important Ilo-Awela Road and modernised Ota through modern township roads. Ogun State, under the current government, is one huge construction site. The number of township roads, bridges rehabilitated or still under construction across the State are too numerous to mention.
Alongside infrastructure development, Amosun has carved out a niche for revolutionizing the education sector. Tuition fees and all forms of levies in the State have been abolished for all students in primary and secondary schools. In addition, the distribution of free textbooks to pupils of public primary and secondary schools by the Amosun administration has helped to ensure that education remains accessible. This has equally ended the practice in public schools where only the class teacher had textbooks or photocopies of textbooks while the pupils had none because of inability of parents to purchase them. The current government offset WAEC fees it inherited and has consistently paid the (WAEC) fees for final-year students of public secondary schools in the State since its inauguration in May, 2011.
The administration also constructed 15 state-of-the-art model schools out of a planned total of 28 across the State. Each school is designed to accommodate 1,000 students and over 200 teaching and non-teaching staff.  The Amosun administration has consistently allocated over 20% of its yearly budget to education in accordance with UNESCO guidelines. It won the 2015 Fafunwa Educational Foundation award, as the state with the highest percentage budgetary allocation to education.
Similarly, affordable and efficient healthcare delivery is another cardinal development agenda of the Mission to rebuild where the administration has performed creditably. To ensure a world-class secondary and tertiary level healthcare that supports the primary healthcare in the state, a state-of-the-art Radio-Diagnostic Centre has been established in Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative. This Centre provides services such as multi-dimensional digital X-ray, ultrasound facility, telemedicine, mammography, fluoroscopy and CT scan.
The Amosun government was the first to pay its MDGs counterpart fund of N60 million to each of the three LGAs chosen as pilot project by the central MDGs. Its Gbomoro health scheme, which covered nine local councils, ensured that pregnant women not only enjoyed free health services but received free ante-natal materials and ‘mama kit’ for mother and baby. Maternal mortality of enrollees throughout the duration of the scheme was zero, a proud accomplishment by any administration.
Since 2011, the administration has ensured the procurement of affordable drugs and consumables from reputable companies and suppliers through a competitive bidding process. This has helped to use resources more efficiently and reduce the risk of inferior medication. Also, government set up across the State 35 HIV/AIDS Counselling/Testing Centres and 31 Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) sites to take care of people living with HIV/AIDS, including free drugs for those with the disease.
Finance and financial policy under Senator Ibikunle Amosun administration is not short of ambition. The administration has continued to seek new ways to grow the economy of the State in order to achieve a sustainable and inclusive growth and development across the State. From a paltry N730 million monthly Internally Generated Revenue in 2011, the state currently boasted N7 billion and over 300 new industries have been established in the state between 2011 and 2018.
On a final note, for Ogun to continue to serve as a model for good governance , aspiring candidates into executive and legislative arms of government in the state must be ready to jealously preserve and sustain the Amosun’s legacies with the necessary political will. Anything short of this would only take the gateway state back to the years of darkness. God forbid!
Olagoke is the Secretary to Local Government, Abeokuta North, Ogun State.
