Probably one of the worst effects of the disney live action remake trend is that it's got people talking about the original movies as if they are golden standards of animated cinema, when often they are rife with their own issues, both within the works themselves and outside them. Like many of these movies still function as mechanisms through which disney monopolized the animation industry, monetized poor rip offs of better and yet lesser-known pre-existing media, crafted conservative slop to forcefeed directly into the mouths of children, turned minority groups into marketable caricatures, etc etc. It's just that the remakes are so devoid of even the slightest hint of artistic integrity that the overall bar for what counts as a "good movie" is buried six feet underground.
#like not that I want to act like original disney films don't have any artistic value but thats just the thing#this website's discussion of art often hinges on a false binary of ''art with value'' and ''art without value''#or even more frequently ''real art'' and ''slop''#and I think its very easy for everyone to switch to uncritically placing art on a pedestal simply because something worse exists#I think its also easy for everyone to forget about the metric shitton of slop produced by the past and lean into fearmongering about#the degeneration of art and culture#which I shouldn't have to explain why it's bad but I think some people beliieve that if they simply don't use the Bad Words about it#their approach to artistic critique will simply be devoid of conspiratorial or fascistic thought#but let me just say believing we exist in a time of uniquely Bad or Meaningless art simply because the biggest company in the world#is making bad art. sort of just means you need to branch out
