She was heading up the shop alone today, so she had her music blasting as she worked on the '78 Camaro that had been dropped off earlier that morning. She heard the sound of the bell above the main door ring, causing her to call out from beneath the hood.

"I'll be just a minute!" Finishing up what she was doing, Kara stood up and wiped at her forehead with her forearm before making her way through the shop to the front desk. Her stomach sank, however, when her eyes fell on the face of a woman who she had only ever seen in photographs during secret rendezvous with this woman's husband. And although she feared the worst, she cleared her throat and offered a smile.

"Good afternoon, what can I do for you?"

At the reaction from the other, Kara laughed softly and shrugged her shoulders. “Well, if I want to leave tonight with my ego in-tact, then yep. Consider me surrendering to your superior performance.” she replied, grinning over at Chey. Her fingers were within her purse when she heard the suggestion of changing the forfeit and an eyebrow raised in response. “If you’re sure, I think I can manage a beer, maybe more than one if you’d like. Come on.” With a smile and a nod of her head towards the bar, she made her way across to order their drinks.

My car makes a noise... Kara was a little baffled, but part of that was simply caused by the horror of seeing the woman before her. She quickly pulled herself together, however, and offered a small smile to the other. "Um... Of course. I can certainly take a look for you, if you'd like." she replied. "Safer to get it sorted than ignore it. I'm sure both you and your car out there are too valuable to leave it to its own devices." She couldn't be sure if this woman knew anything, or if it was just chance that it was her shop that she had come to, but she wasn't about to make any mistakes. Stepping out of the building and moving towards the car, she motioned towards the hood. "Could you pop the hood for me? Is there anything that the car is doing when the noise happens?"

Kara had kept telling herself that it would be a terrible idea to follow through on their mutual feelings for one another. They had agreed that it would be too much of a risk - their friendship was perfect, and the idea of doing something that would ruin that? It was something that Kara wasn’t willing to take a chance on. That was, of course, until she had maybe a drink too many at a mutual friend’s party one night, and the liquid courage made her do a complete 180 on that decision. 

She sought him out in the crowd, eyes scanning the room for his wonderful smiling face, however as she stepped over to a quieter corner of the building, she came to a halt. Her gaze landed on the sight of him sat in a chair, someone else in his lap with lips locked. Hand exploring one another’s bodies, he seemed lost in the moment and it left Kara feeling sick, her stomach twisting and her heart aching. Without wasting a moment, she turned on her heel and took a speedy walking pace out of the house and into the cold night air, fighting the nausea growing within her.

Kara had known what they were doing was wrong from the very beginning, and she had tried so very hard to resist the enchanting pull of being with Cole. They had even insisted one more than one occasion that it couldn’t happen again, but nonetheless, they would find themselves back in each other’s arms not long after. Cole was an incredible man; kind, humble, funny... He was everything she longed for. It just so happened that he was already taken. But so far, they had managed to get away with their ‘friendly’ catch ups, with him coming to the ranch to paint just as they had in their earliest days of knowing one another before the fateful first kiss. 

But this time, things were different. 

They had driven to the next city over, where they would not be noticed, and were out and about without a care in the world. At least, he had not a care in the world. Kara, however, was inwardly panicking because of the news that she had to give him at some point. It wasn’t going to be easy, and what should be a joyous moment was a point of fear for her. “We should stop at the little cafe up ahead. I read they do wonderful smoothies.”

Kara smiled brightly at the teacher, glancing down to her daughter with a small gasp. “Did you, now? And was it a good book?” she asked, watching as Saira nodded her head enthusiastically. “Well, you’ll have to tell me all about it when we get home. I want to hear about this good story.” There was a light laugh in her tone before she looked back to the other woman, gratitude in her eyes for how much Penelope had helped already. 

“Oh, thank you so much. It’s a kind offer, but it was just work. The shop just sometimes has much busier days than others, it seems like everyone’s car had a problem today, and my brother is on vacation. But really, looking after Saira has been the most incredible help. I just wish I could repay you somehow.”

When the little three dots appeared on her screen, indicating that Morgan was writing back, Kara’s heart did a little leap within her chest. The very fact that they had matched had her somewhat floored, given that it meant that Morgan had clearly chosen to like her in return. She knew that Neel really  got along with his friend, the two had a lot of in common and it was nice to know that he had someone in his life like that who wasn’t going to try and take advantage of his kind nature (unlike some in the past), but it was that friendship which had caused Kara’s silence. Until now. 

Kara: It’s certainly a compliment, don’t worry. Definitely surprised that YOU’RE single. How has no one snatched you up yet? You’re gorgeous. It’s simply criminal ;) 

She was now sat upright, staring at her phone with her heart rate picking up slightly. Was this potentially a silly thing to do? Sure. But it wasn’t going to stop her.

It was a warm day outside as she worked on the final touches for someone’s Cadillac, wiping away a bead of sweat from her forehead. Hearing the bell above her door ringing, Kara pushed away from the car with a smile on her face and approached the woman who had entered. 

“Hi there.” Wiping her hands on her dungarees, she leaned on the counter. “What can I do for you?”

As the man spoke, Kara nodded her head and shrugged her shoulders. 

“Well, I guess you could call cheating on me with my best friend pretty fucked up.” she admitted, being mostly over it until she saw him there tonight. She managed a smile, glad and grateful that he had agreed to help her out, leaning against the bar as they spoke. “Honestly, I’ve been asking myself that exact question many times since it ended, I could do so much better.” She didn’t mean it in a stuck-up way, just that she deserved better than an idiot who would rather sleep with another girl than her. 

“I’m Kara. Lovely to meet you, though I do apologise for it being such bizarre circumstances. Now, what would you like? Anything from the bar is on offer.”

 Kara wasn’t entirely sure what it was about Carmela that was attracting her the most. Maybe it was her undeniable beauty, maybe it was her charming and charismatic personality, maybe it was the slight air of mystery that seemed to surround her. Either way, she couldn’t deny the way she was feeling and she just wanted to spend more time with her. 

It was by chance that she was walking home one afternoon as the sun was beginning to set and she spotted Carmela across the road from her, and with a smile she approached. 

“Hey there.” Kara greeted, slowing to a stop just before reaching the other woman. “How’s your day?”

Smiling brightly at him, Kara closed the door behind her and locked it up, quickly darting underneath the umbrella he was holding. 

“I’m open to just about anything, just as long as I get to hang out with you.” she replied, shifting her bag onto her shoulder and glancing up at the rain clouds above. It was hardly ideal weather, but she didn’t mind. There was always something to do somewhere. They were creative with their dates, and could easily make last minute changes depending on circumstances. 

“There’s that lovely little cafe in the museum too, we could grab lunch there. A good alternative for hot dogs, I’d say, and it’s my treat by the way.” she said, insisting. She certainly disliked the idea of any expectations being put on the guys to pay for things, especially early on. She was always of the mind set that any relationship should start out on equal footing. “Shall we?”
