Battle of Karánsebes

The Ottoman Caliphate and the Holy Roman Empire (Austria, and a few other states) have had a long history of fighting eachother. They just couldn't get along.

So, its 1788, and both the boxers are back in the ring. The Ottomans plan to make a move into modern day Romania while the Austrians reach the strategically important town of Caránsebes and hunker down behind the Timiş rivier, avaiting the Ottoman onslaught.

The Austrian Hussars (light cavalry) move across the bridge, crossing the river, to scout ahead for the approaching Ottoman forces. Instead of finding Ottoman scouts, they come across a group of camped Romanians who were, coincidentally, selling schnapps (a type of alcoholic beverage). The Hussars went ahead and helped themselves by buying the schnapps and promptly began to drink the liquor.

A while later, the Austrian infantry crossed the bridge to check up on the hussars and found them merry drunk with the schnapps. Wanting to have in on the fun, they asked for some of the beverage and, when the Hussars refused, a scuffle broke out.

The fight between the infantry and hussars escalated when someone misfired a musket, after which it became a deadly contest with both the sides thinking that the other was trying to kill them.

In between all this, the Croat infantrymen tried to placate both the sides by asking to stop. The only problem was, "Stop" in Croatian is "Tući".

In the heat of the fight, we can all guess what the rest of them heard:

"TURCI! TURCI! TURCI!"

Which is, of course, the Croation word for "Turks".

All hell broke lose as both the sides, panicking, ran back towards the bridge in a disorderly fashion, all the while still fighting eachother. This only succeeded in increasing the chaos of an already chaotic situation. Hearing musket fires, and ringing of the swords, the Austrian officers on the other side of the bridge thought the fleeing hssars were actually Turkish Sipahis (heavy cavalry). They ordered fire upon the oncoming soldiers, and when they realised that it wasn't the Turks, they did what any sensible person would do. They shouted "Halt!" again and again. The only problem was, shouting "Halt!" again and again in the midst of a battle sounds suspiciously close to "Allah".

In the heat of the battle, we can all guess what the rest of them heard:

"ALLAH! ALLAH! ALLAH!"

That's when everything broke down. The officers ran, the infantry men ran, the cavalry galloped. Seeing the mass of men coming towards them, the artillery did what anyone would do when the enemy is coming towards you. They opened fire.

Except, the men coming towards them weren't the enemy. They were their own fellow soldiers.

Needless to say, the Ottomans were BEYOND confused as to where the supposed enemy army was. They were even more confused to find a barricade around barrels of schnapps, as if someone was trying to defend them (hmmmm wonder who it could be). They promptly crossed the bridge and captured the town of Karánsebes without much of a hassle.

Sources differ on as to how many men persished ranging from as low as 150 men to as much as 9000-10,000. The truth is somewhere between the two spectrums.

Also lost and later captured was the chest containing the payroll of the Austrian Army alongside three Austrian canons.
