H58 IPARRITYI – Whitmore Square Apartment Building
Design: Enzo Caroscio
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Enzo Caroscio unveils latest design in South Australia
Adelaide’s newest apartment development in Whitmore Square promises to be a sophisticated addition to the city’s southwest.
58 IPARRITYI
Called 58 IPARRITYI, the Kaurna name for Whitmore Square, the boutique mixed-use building will sit on the southwest corner and will have 11 residences and a retail and hospitality precinct at the ground level.
Designer Enzo Caroscio, known locally for his work on the SAHMRI and Bohem apartment complex, said he took inspiration from the creative architecture of the Labyrinth home of Xavier Corbero and Rome’s Palazzo della Civilta’ Italiana.
Caroscio said he wanted to create “highly sculptured and articulated architecture through recessed shadowing and the play of solid versus void”.
The building features setback and stepped upper levels, repetitive and varied window openings, with symmetric arched framed loggias that will be transformed throughout the day by the contrast of shadows passing across at the façade.
“The composition and creative form of the building creates a boutique and sophisticated original addition to Whitmore Square,” Caroscio said.
“From within, we have created homes that feel part of the city with its visual connections to the green square and city skylines.”
Melissa Pisanelli, the director of the developer Studio Simpatico, said she had lived in the city for the past decade and had ensured every aspect of 58 IPARRITYI was carefully considered to enhance city living.
“I adore the village living that the southwest quarter provides, it offers the convenience of city living bundled with a strong sense of community,” Pisanelli said.
“It’s exciting to see so many young couples and families moving into the area, as well as small businesses, and a surge of creative professionals.”
Pisanelli said the complex was designed with these people in mind and would “contribute to the colourful and rich heritage of the square”.
“The building is design orientated with fully functional spaces thoughtfully designed to be lived in,” she said.
The generously sized homes include architecturally designed kitchens with Miele appliances, ducted reverse cycle air-conditioning, large bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, and floor-to-ceiling tiled bathrooms with premium Caroma fittings and fixtures.
“We chose to partner with Caroma for all of our premium fittings and fixtures not only due to quality design and craftsmanship, but its unique heritage in Adelaide”, Pisanelli said.
“The brand is a reminder of the entrepreneurial endeavours of migrants to Adelaide.”
The fittings are not the only aspect giving a nod to South Australia.
Local artists have also been commissioned to provide an artwork work for each level, including a permanent floral installation by Studio Botanic florist Nadia Travaglini, and each of the 23 bathrooms will have a hand-crafted basin by local ceramicist Samantha Faehrmann of Butter and Gravy.
Pisanelli said custom-made oversized arched windows and large Juliette balconies will allow in natural light and promote cross-ventilation to the apartment.
“Architecturally, there is nothing else like it in Adelaide,” she said.
The innovative homes also incorporate large, functional outdoor spaces, with west-facing residences featuring a private ‘loggia’ to provide privacy and shade while framing views of Adelaide’s parklands.
While the apartments will have private car parks, the complex will also house a Mercedes-Benz EQA electric vehicle for the shared use of residents through booking on a private app.
Sales begin on 3 May with construction set to commence in October 2021. For more information head to https://58iparrityi.com.

Chestnut) Dec. 11, 2019 through Jan. 5, 2020.  A Critic's Pick by the Daily Herald, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out London, Washington Post and Boston Globe, the show won the prestigious 2012 Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment & Family Show, playing to sold-out houses worldwide. The current Las Vegas engagement of the show is the recent recipient of several Best of Las Vegas awards, including the 2019 Gold Winner for the Best New Production in Las Vegas. Created by former BBC Television hosts Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, the play takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing, or “potting,” all seven Harry Potter books into 70 madcap minutes, aided only by multiple costume changes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic. The show also invites audiences to engage with a real life game of Quidditch, but according to Clarkson and Turner’s unique set of rules. Whether you camped outside a bookstore for three days awaiting the release of the Deathly Hallows or you don’t know the difference between a horcrux and a Hufflepuff, the comedy, magic and mayhem of Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff makes for an entertaining and hilarious visit to the theatre. The fast-paced show, which has made audiences aged six to Dumbledore (who is very old indeed) roar with laughter all over the world, is perfect for the entire family. TICKET INFORMATION Individual tickets for Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff range in price from $39.95 - $79.95 with a select number of premium tickets available. Individual ticket will be available by calling the Broadway In Chicago Ticketline at (800) 775-2000 or by visiting BroadwayInChicago.com. Tickets also are available now for groups of 10 or more by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at (312) 977-1710 or emailing [email protected]. Last October, a couple of friends and I jumped on a plane to Copenhagen, Denmark. We booked the trip on a bit of a whim (thank you Norwegian Air for your affordable flights) and in all honesty, I didn’t really know what to expect of the city.
I’d been around Norway and to Stockholm but never to Denmark (I’m actually trying to visit all the Nordic countries before I’m 30, so this got me another step closer!). I’d heard great things but aside from their obsession with bicycles, the Little Mermaid and their beautiful Royal Family, I didn’t know much about Copenhagen.
I looked up a few restaurants/general things to do, but didn’t really think about how we would fill our time. I was going with two friends that I was eager to catch up with and very aware that we would probably spend most of our time chatting (I wasn’t wrong there), so drinking/eating was my first priority.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is, I went to Copenhagen with a completely open mind and no real idea of what to expect. I came back absolutely blown away – I always say that for me what makes a great city, is when I feel like I could live there and immediately, walking the streets of Copenhagen felt like home.
I think a big part of it is down to it having a similar vibe to my real home – London. It has this amazing mix of historic buildings: palaces, churches, political buildings and then also, super cool neighbourhoods with amazing breweries and interesting restaurants.
Here were my highlights of the weekend:
  THINGS TO DO
  Freetown Christiania
I’d heard about Freetown but until you experience it, it’s hard to completely understand. It’s basically a ‘hippy’ area of Copenhagen. There’s lots of colourful buildings, artsy murals and seeing as there’s no cars, a really nice place to walk around. Plus, there are loads of options for food and drink, including of course, a heck of a lot of vegetarian cafes.
I don’t have many photos are you’re not allowed to take photographs within the main part of Christiania, probably because there are people openly selling weed there (even though they’re not actually meant to).
Just outside it though, are the most beautiful houses – we walked around gawping at how incredible they were. A lot of them looked self built but were well maintained and looked very loved by their owners. It’s definitely worth exploring a bit further afield than just the main areas.
Wander the Old Streets Magstræde and Snaregade
Copenhagen is a beautiful city and to be honest, most streets have their charm but these two streets in particular are picture perfect. They’re also quieter than some of the surrounding areas and it’s worth spending some time walking around here, if even just for a bit of peace!
  Nyhavn
Nyhavn is a beautiful old port, where Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen once lived. The area itself reminded me a lot of Bergen’s ‘Bryggen’ –  lined with beautiful coloured houses and enchanting architecture, you can see why so many people want to photograph them both.
It’s a busy area – it’s nice to walk around and take photos here, you can also stop for a beer/some food although as with any area popular with tourists likely to be even more expensive than some other parts of the city.
  Tivoli Gardens
I won’t lie, even as I was queuing to go into Tivoli I didn’t really have a clue what it was and still even though I’ve now been, I’m still not really sure how to explain it. It’s basically a park/amusement park (the second oldest in the world actually) with rides and a market, that is always beautifully themed and dressed for each time of year.
We were there during Halloween, hence the many pumpkins.
It’s much bigger than I first realised it was and you could easily spend a day here really taking everything in. We went in the evening to really make the most of the ‘spooky’ decorations, so only spent a couple of hours there before it was closing. It is a bit tacky but it’s still fun to walk around – there are lots of different areas to the park, each with their own restaurants/pubs/shops etc, a bit like Thorpe Park/a small Disneyland (Walt Disney is said to have taken inspiration from Tivoli when building Disney World).
  Little Mermaid Statue
Inspired by a ballerina and made in 1913, she’s getting on a bit in terms of age and has been vandalised a few times (including having her head sawn off) but as as she’s made of granite and bronze, and the city has carefully looked after her, she doesn’t really look it.
I do think this is a bit contrived but like the ‘manneken pis’ in Brussels, it’s just one of those things that you have to see if you come to Copenhagen. The area she’s in is quite nice, with lots of fountains and parks, so if its nice weather it’s definitely worth spending some time wandering around and not just coming to see her.
It was a slightly rainy day when we visited, so we spent only spent a short amount of time looking at the statue/avoiding the crowds of other people visiting it) but we still made sure to see some of the lovely fountains/statues nearby as well.
Scandinavian Shopping
I’ve always been a bit obsessed with Scandi style – Hay and Broste are two of my favourite designers, and Skandinavisk make maybe the best candle I’ve ever smelled. I definitely try to incorporate some Scandinavian chic into my own home, so I was very happy when we ended up in the home section of department store ‘Illum’ in the shopping district and saw there was a sale on ‘Ib Laursen’ and ‘Bloomingville’.
I’m due to move into my own flat soon and so have been collecting items for the new place, which I’m so excited about. If you’ve read any of my other posts, you’ll know how much I love collecting things from my travels such as prints, vases, antiques etc. It’s nice being able to just look at an item and be reminded of a special memory.
From Illum I bought two candle holders and some candle sticks, then in another small gift store I bought this little tealight house (I got it discounted because it was a bit wonky but personally I love that its imperfect, I think it adds to the charm!) I can’t wait for them all to sit pride of place in my new home.
FOOD/DRINK
  Warpigs and Mikkeller
Ugh I just. I just love Warpigs so much. It’s a BBQ place that serves INCREDIBLE food (veggie included) and they’ve teamed up with beer company Mikkeller (again INCREDIBLE beer) to make one of my favourite places ever. If it was in London I’m not sure I’d ever feel the need to eat/drink elsewhere ever.
There is a Mikkeller in London and I have noticed a few supermarkets (Marks and Spencers for example) do stock some of their beers, so it’s not like I can’t experience part of it but there’s something about Warpigs that I just really enjoyed; communal tables, loud music, I don’t know – a very East London vibe that I could very much get on board with.
  Torvehallerne
On the complete other side of the spectrum, is the calm and collected Tovehallerne. A food market which just so happened to be very close to our hotel and also, where we had breakfast every day.
What can I say? Once you’ve tried a pastry from Laura’s Bakery, there’s no going back. She makes a variety of cinnamon buns with different flavours and I think we must have made it our aim to try them all because my goodness, did I eat a lot of them.
As well as Laura’s Bakery, there’s a lot of amazing options for other food and drink, including ‘Coffee Collective’ who make the smooth but strong latte of my dreams. Paired with a pastry they’re just *chef’s kiss* (very good). Plus, there’s even a Mikkeller beer shop within this food hall! Honestly, what more could you want.
  Neighbourhood
There’s a few famous pizza joints within Copenhagen – ‘Mother’ is the big one I had heard of but in truth, I couldn’t get a reservation there as it was a weekend and I left it far too late. Thankfully, just around the corner was a branch of ‘Neighbourhood’, which I would recommend again and again.
As with (it seems) every place we ate at, it had a super cool vibe (all of the servers were young, dressed like they’d walked out of Harper’s Bazaar but still very nice) and of course, the food was delicious. Their unique flavours and thin pizza bases make for something really special.
We all had a pizza each and then stayed for a few hours drinking beers, and chilling out. Normally after a pizza I’d almost immediately fall into a food coma and want to go to sleep, but as they were so light, miraculously I had room for a beer (or three) afterwards.
  IBSEN’S HOTEL
We didn’t do a lot of research on hotels – our choice was based mainly on location and price; it was very central and cost just under £100 each for 2 nights (based on 3 people sharing a triple room). Well that and how Ibsens offers a happy hour every day in the hotel lobby, where you can get one free glass of wine/beer (or a soft drink). And anywhere that offers free alcohol sounds like a great place in my book.
Thankfully, we made a great choice here – the Ibsens was perfect for us. Not only was it in the perfect location but it also had the perfect vibe. Everything about it was fun and well thought out – little things like a stool in the bathroom so you can sit while doing your make up, and this ‘do not disturb’ sign, really brightened our days.
If you’re looking to save money, I would suggest getting an apartment as buying food from the supermarket is much cheaper but if like us, you’re only going for a few days and would rather eat out, then I would 100% recommend this hotel. I would happily stay there again if/when I return to the city.
  USEFUL INFO
Travelling around Copenhagen was actually incredibly easy. We got the metro to and from the airport, and also used the train/metro system to travel around.
We used it sparingly as it wasn’t cheap and mostly walked – staying central really helped with this. Often we would get the metro to the furthest point we intended on going that day, then slowly walked our way back. It’s a beautiful city, so it would be a shame to miss out on being able to walk through and see it all!
It also can often get a bit cold in Copenhagen, so sometimes its nice to jump on the Metro just to warm up a bit! It wasn’t freezing when I went in October (nothing is really once you’ve lived through a Canadian winter) but it was a touch windy/did spit with rain from time to time, so it’s definitely worth bringing a warm hooded jacket. (Option to pull over your head at all times is up to you)
Also as I mentioned, Copenhagen isn’t a cheap city – be prepared to spend around £3.50 for a coffee and around £8 for a beer (dependant on where exactly you go of course). Living in London, the prices were definitely a bit more than what I would usually spend but they weren’t too shocking. I’m used to paying around £2.80 for a coffee and £5 for a beer (I’m aware people from outside London might find that ridiculous!)
We didn’t use a lot of cash in Copenhagen – I have a Monzo card (a cash card) which I would really recommend (I have also heard great things about Revolut and Starling Bank). You can use it as your usual current/savings account but I mostly use it for travelling/fun things. There is no charge to use it abroad and when you do spend money, you get a notification through the app which tells you how much money you have spent in your own currency, which makes it incredibly helpful.
Of course, they do still take cash but I personally found card easiest – almost everywhere takes card and I just find it easier to keep track of my money this way.

A Weekend in Copenhagen Last October, a couple of friends and I jumped on a plane to Copenhagen, Denmark. We booked the trip on a bit of a whim (thank you Norwegian Air for your affordable flights) and in all honesty, I didn't really know what to expect of the city.

Chicago Theatre
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Chicago Theatre
The Chicago Theatre, originally known as the Balaban and Katz Chicago Theatre, is a landmark theater located on North State Street in the Loop area of Chicago, Illinois. Built in 1921, the Chicago Theatre was the flagship for the Baraban and Katz (B&K) group of theaters by A. J. Balaban, his brother Barney Balaban and partner Sam Katz. Along with the other B&K theaters, from 1925 1945 the Chicago Theatre was dominant movie theater enterprise. Currently, Madison Square Garden, Incorporated owns and operates the Chicago Theatre as a performing arts venue for stage plays, magic shows, comedy speeches, and popular music concerts.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 6, 1979, and was listed as a Chicago Landmark on January 28, 1983. The distinctive Chicago Theatre marquee, “an unofficial emblem of the city,” appears frequently in film, television, artwork and photography.
Abe and Barney Balaban, with Sam and Morris Katz – founders of the Balaban and Katz theater chain, built the Chicago Theatre in 1921 as one of a large chain of opulent motion picture houses. The theater would become the flagship for 28 theaters in the city, now over 100 others in the Midwest. They own some in conjunction with the Paramount Publix chain. Cornelius W. Rapp and George L. Rapp were primary architects and the final construction cost was $4 million ($53.7 million in 2017 dollars). The Rapp brothers also designed many other B&K properties in Chicago, including the Oriental and Uptown Theaters. Preceded by the now demolished Tivoli Theater of Chicago and Capitol Theatre of New York City. The Chicago Theatre was the “…largest, most costly and grandest of the super deluxe movie palaces” built up to that date and thus now the oldest surviving grand movie palace. The Chicago Theatre was among the earliest theaters in the nation to be built in Rapp and Rapp’s signature Neo-Baroque French-revival style. It is the oldest surviving example of this style in Chicago. The original 1921 interior decoration of the auditorium included fourteen large romantic French-themed murals surrounding the proscenium by Chicago artist Louis Grell (1887-1960), a common feature that Rapp and Rapp architects included in their movie palace designs.
When it opened on October 26, 1921, the 3,880 seat theater was promoted as the “Wonder Theatre of the World”. Capacity crowds packed the theater during the opening week for the First National Pictures feature The Sign on the Door starring Norma Talmadge. Other attractions included a 50-piece orchestra, famed organist Jesse Crawford at the 26 rank Wurlitzer theatre organ. “Oh yes, it was mighty” recalled Orson Welles – and a live stage show. Poet Carl Sandburg reporting for the Chicago Tribune, wrote that mounted police were required for crowd control. The Theatre’s strategy of enticing movie patrons with a plush environment and top notch service (including the pioneering use of air-conditioning) was emulated nationwide.
During its first 40 years of operation, the Chicago Theatre presented premiere films and live entertainment. Throughout its existence, many of the top performers and stars of their day made live appearances at the theater. One of its biggest draws was live jazz, which Balaban and Katz promoted as early as September, 1922 in a special event they called “Synocopation Week.” This proved so successful that jazz bands became a mainstay of the Chicago Theatre’s programming through the 1920s and into the 1930s. In preparation for the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, the Chicago Theatre was redecorated. Part of the World’s Fair renovation included another commission by Balaban & Katz for Grell to repaint the architecturally enclosed fourteen murals. This time Grell chose Greek/Roman deities as the theme for the large oil on canvas murals which are on public exhibit today in the theatre auditorium. The building has been associated with popular culture occasions. For example, Ronald Reagan announced his engagement to Jane Wyman at the theater. Another modernization occurred in the 1950s when management discontinued stage shows.
The Chicago Theatre Preservation Group commenced renovation of the buildings which were completed in 1986 at a cost of $9 million ($19.7 million), with $4.3 million ($9.4 million) spent on the Theatre. The renovation by architects Daniel P. Coffey & Associates, Limited and interior design consultants A. T. Heinsbergen & Company restored the Chicago Theatre to a 1930s appearance and a seating capacity of 3,600. The Theatre opened September 10, 1986, with a performance by Frank Sinatra marking the culmination of a four-year historic preservation effort championed by the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois. The gala reopening was also symbolic because Sinatra had performed at the theater in the 1950s. The restoration of the adjoining Page Building, itself a Chicago and National Register landmark, provided office space to support the theatre. The theater, like its neighbor the Joffrey Tower, is an important component of the North Loop/Theater District revitalization plan. Theatre district revitalization plans go back as far as Mayor Jane Byrne’s 1981 plan.
On April 1, 2004, TheatreDreams Chicago LLC. purchased the building for $3 million. The Balaban and Katz trademark is now the property of the Balaban and Katz Historical Foundation. New York’s Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced on October 11, 2007, that it would buy the theater.
Prior to 2008, the theater hosted the annual opening film of the Chicago International Film Festival until the festivities moved to the nearby Harris Theater. Mayor Richard M. Daley declared July 12, 2005 “Roger Ebert Day in Chicago” and dedicated a plaque under the marquee in his honor. The theater is featured in the book, The Chicago Movie Palaces of Balaban and Katz, by David Balaban, grandson of the original owner.
As of 2011, as permitted under the terms of sale dictated by the city, the vertical CHICAGO sign had a logotype for Chase Bank added to indicate sponsorship.
The structure is seven stories tall and fills nearly one half of a city block. The 60-foot wide by six-story tall triumphal arch motif of the State Street façade has been journalistically compared to the l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The central arch headed window adapts the familiar motif of Borromini’s false-perspective window reveals of the top floor of Palazzo Barberini Rome. The coat of arms of the Baraban and Katz chain – two horses holding ribbons of 35 mm film in the mouths outlined by a border of film reels – is set inside a circular Tiffany stained glass window inside the arch. The exterior of the building covered in off-white architectural terracotta supplied by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Company with Neo-Baroque stucco designs by the McNulty Brothers.
The interior shows French Baroque influence from the Second French Empire. The grand lobby, five stories high and surrounded by a gallery promenades at the mezzanine and balcony levels, is influence by the Royal Chapel at Versailles. The grand staircase is patterned from the grand stair of the Paris Opera House that ascends to the various balcony levels. Marshall Field and Company supplied interior decorations including drapes and furniture. The crystal chandeliers and bronze light fixtures fitted with Steuben glass shades were designed and built by Victor Pearlman and Company.
The stage dimensions exceed 60 feet in width and 30 feet in depth. The orchestra pit is approximately 6 feet below stage level, 54 feet wide at the stage lip, with a depth of 15 feet at center. An adjustable pit filler can be used for performances requiring other levels.
At the time of the buildings 1978 application for the National Register of Historic Places designation, the venue’s marquee had been replaced twice. The original marquee was basic and facilitated two lines of text for announcements. The 1922-1923 marquee had ornate “flashing pinwheels, swirls and garlands of colored lights.” It also included “milk glass letter attraction boards, and CHICAGO in large letters on three sides.” The 1949 replacement was similar to the second marquee, but its attraction boards were larger and the oversized CHICAGO lettering only appeared on the front. Until Balaban and Katz’ 1969 sale to American Broadcasting Company their name was on the marquee. The entire marquee was replaced in 1994, but retains the look of its predecessor. In 2004, the original marquee was donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The marquee is featured in numerous movies and TV shows set in Chicago, and its neon front was used in the title of the 2002 film Chicago.
The theater is best known for its grand Wurlitzer pipe organ. At the time it was installed it was known as the “Mighty Wurlitzer” and could imitate the instruments of an orchestra. Jesse Crawford, a noted Theatre Organ performer, is attributed as the person who “was responsible for the design and choice of sounds.” The Organ came from the Wurlitzer’s North Tonawanda Barrel Organ Factory in July 1921 with “four manuals and 26 ranks of pipes – Opus 434”. The American Theatre Organ Society restored the organ in 1970, which had expended the organ from 26 to 29 ranks by that time. It is one of the oldest Mighty Wurlitzer’s still in existence.
