It had been a long day and Finan found himself slumped over the table, a jug of ale in front of him in the crowded alehouse. He’d come with Sihtric but he had gone home to his wife hours ago. So he sat alone, and drank. He was in a miserable mood, the wound in his shoulder causing him much more pain than he would admit to anyone. It wasn’t so much the pain that was the cause of his foul mood, but rather the fact that it prevented him from doing anything vaguely interesting. He was stuck helping Uhtred look over the estate accounts and overseeing the training of the new recruits, but not being able to take part himself. He had nothing against hard work, coming home exhausted and aching from a long day’s graft was what he had become used to. What he couldn’t stand was boredom. The day seemed to never end, dragging on from one monotonous task to the next.
It was made worse by the fact that Lucinda wasn’t around, being sent on an errand to Mercia by Uhtred. He had moved in with her and her daughter, Saara, only a couple of weeks earlier, however he had gotten used his new surroundings. He liked sharing a home with them and enjoyed waking up to Lucinda next to him even more. They were taking things slow, not having laid together yet, but he didn’t mind, having her in his arms and knowing she was his was enough.
As the evening drew on, it became clear that he had drank rather more than perhaps he ought have. His mind was becoming fuzzy and the world span a little if he lifted his head up too quick. What also came apparent was that one of the barmaids seemed to have a thing for him, not that he paid too much attention to her. She was pretty, he guessed, with long dark hair, but he was very much in love with Lucinda so turned his attention back to his ale.
He gestured to the bar for someone to bring him more ale – not the brightest idea he had ever had, but he was already drunk, what was a little bit more ale going to do? The darkhaired barmaid came over, bringing another jug of ale with her. She placed the jug in front of him, but to his annoyance didn’t leave. ‘You look lonely, lord,’ she said seductively, gently running her finger over his temple.
He shrugged her off. ‘I’m fine, thank ya’,’ he said, slurring his words slightly.
She ignored him, moving to sit on his lap with her arm around his neck. She ran her fingers through his hair lightly and pressed her body against his. ‘You don’t look fine, lord,’ she told him, batting her eyelashes at him. ‘Perhaps you could do with some company?’
He watched as she traced her finger along his jaw, her face close to his. He would be lying if he wasn’t a little tempted, he was drunk, miserable and lonely, but as pretty as she was, she wasn’t Lucinda. ‘I said I’m fine,’ he reiterated gruffly, shrugging her hand away. ‘I’m sure you’ve got other customers who need ya’ attention.’
The woman stayed sitting on his lap, how mouth drawn into a thin line as she stared at him. He thought that she would refuse to leave when a voice behind them got the woman’s attention. ‘He said he’s fine. Now leave.’ Lucinda’s calm voice carried across the room. By the look of fear on the barmaid’s face he guessed she had the look she used when she was ready for a fight, no doubt having a hand hovering on the hilt of her sword for good measure. The image made him smile.
The barmaid quickly left, hurrying over to the opposite side of the alehouse with nothing but a scowl in Lucinda’s direction. ‘Hello, mo grá,’ he slurred, smiling up at her as she came and stood beside where he was sitting.
‘I’m sorry if I… interrupted something,’ she replied dryly, glancing over to where the dark haired barmaid was now laughing with some other customers.
‘Of course not, in fact I’m glad ya’ came when ya’ did, or she might never have left!’ Finan pulled her into his lap, catching her slightly by surprise. ‘You’re the only woman I want, I swear!’ he said emphatically, wrapping his arms around her and keeping her close. ‘You’re my woman and I’m ya’ man.’
She smiled, wrapping an arm around his neck. ‘I know, but that won’t stop other women from trying.’
He groaned, pulling her into a fierce kiss. ‘Then we’ll have to show them that I’m spoken for, eh?’ he murmured against her lips before moving and kissing along her jaw and down her neck. His hands ran along her thighs, moving higher and higher.
‘Finan…’ she moaned as his hand grazed along her centre through the fabric of her trousers. ‘Not here, people will see.’
‘Let ‘em,’ he muttered, ‘let ‘em know ya’ mine.’
‘How much have you drunk?’ she asked sceptically pulling his hands away from her slightly and giving him a stern look.
‘Not that much,’ he muttered.
‘Hmmm, well I think you have had quite enough.’
‘Hey!’ he whined as she took the jug of ale away from him, chugging half of it herself.
She climbed off his lap, an affectionate look in her eyes as she observed him. ‘Come on, lets go home.’ He took the hand she offered, pulling him to his feet and causing him to sway slightly as the world seemed to spin around him. Lucinda laughed, shaking her head before wrapping an arm around him and supporting him as they walked across the alehouse.
As they walked home along the deserted streets of Coccham, the cool night air seemed to sober Finan up a bit, clearing his head. ‘I’m sorry if I got a bit carried away in there. I didn’t mean to make ya’ uncomfortable.’
‘You didn’t,’ she reassured him, before a cheeky smile grew across her face, ‘in fact I rather enjoyed it. Perhaps next time you’ll actually be able to remember it the next morning?’
‘Next time?’ he grinned.
‘Oh shut up. Come on, you need to get in bed.’
