Approximately 20 percent of college students believe that violence is an acceptable response to a public speaker, according to a recent survey from the Brookings Institution.
The survey first set up a scenario, stating:
A public university invites a very controversial speaker to an on-campus event. The speaker is known for making offensive and hurtful statements.
Afterwards, it asked:
A student group opposed to the speaker uses violence to prevent the speaker from speaking. Do you agree or disagree that the student group’s actions are acceptable?
Nineteen percent of all respondents said this was acceptable behavior. Shockingly, this was reinforced across the political spectrum, with 18 percent of Democrats, 22 percent of Republicans, and 16 percent of Independents.
Meanwhile, 51 percent thought that shouting down the speaker so no one could hear was also acceptable, with 49 percent against.
Additionally disturbing were questions of fact on the survey: for example, what the First Amendment protects. Forty-four percent of students thought that the First Amendment didn’t protect hate speech, with only 39 percent saying it did.

According to the breakdown, Republicans and Independents were slightly better than Democrats on some questions, such as shouting down speakers and protection of hate speech (the latter just for Republicans). However, even among these questions, large percentages (~40 percent) still had incorrect answers. As noted above, Republicans were also worse on the question of violence.
All in all, the survey revealed a culture of ignorance regarding the First Amendment, along with a culture of the acceptability of censorship. Many argue that only a minority of students actually engage in this type of behavior. However, this minority is clearly representative of the beliefs of a large portion of the student body.
The onus to change this sort of culture lies on university faculty members and administrators. As Robby Soave points out, if students get basic facts wrong, such as what the First Amendment protects, it’s no wonder that they go out and engage in unlawful behavior. Furthermore, if students have a belief system that it is moral to use violence or shout down a speaker, it’s up to college administrators to create change. That such behavior is frowned upon and will be summarily punished should be a well-known fact on college campuses.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has high hopes about future fights with Republican leadership, according to a Tuesday report from Politico.
Republicans were unable to get a comprehensive health care bill passed last Friday, and Democrats think that means they can keep the pressure going by refusing to work with the GOP on avoiding a government shutdown next month, or confirming President Donald Trump’s appointee to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch.
“They’re in charge. Government shuts down, it’s on their back. We have leverage,” Schumer said during an interview with Politico. “The onus is on them.”
Schumer also thinks Republicans might not get the votes to confirm Gorsuch on their own if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell changes the rules of the Senate to require a 50 plus one majority vote, instead of 60.
“There’s been an almost seismic shift in the caucus” against Gorsuch, Schumer said. “I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion. … There are people in his caucus who really don’t want to change the rules, OK?”
Democrats have confidence that their continued opposition to the Trump administration will play well with mid-term Democratic voters in 2018, and the polls appear to back up that claim. Democratic voters overwhelmingly want their representatives to oppose Trump on almost every front, in order to preserve the legacy of the Obama administration.
Schumer has a history of making claims that didn’t turn out to be true. He “predicted” that Republicans would break ranks with McConnell and demand a vote on Obama appointee Judge Merrick Garland. Schumer also asserted that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election, sparking a “new generation” of Democratic candidates eager to capitalize on the huge win.
“I say what I think. Generally I have a pretty good record,” he said. “But I make mistakes. I sure did with the Hillary campaign. And the only consolation is, so did everybody else.”
Schumer’s office didn’t immediately return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Following the embarrassment that was her over hyped possession of President Donald Trump’s past tax returns, MSNBC personality Rachel Maddow has passed the onus of disappointment on to the people who watch her show, or read her tweets.
“Because I have information about the president doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a scandal. It doesn’t mean that it’s damning information. If other people leapt to that conclusion without me indicating that it was, that hype is external to what we did,” Maddow said of the incident to the Associated Press.
Maddow, regardless of her statement to AP, did spend quite sometime baiting the waters for her show, prior to it airing. She took to Twitter sometime before saying:
BREAKING: We've got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC.
(Seriously).

The Blaze’s Khal Elsebai and Doc Thompson discussed the issue on their morning program “The Morning Blaze” rebuking the TV host for not taking responsibility of hyping the story to her fans.
““This is actually pretty typical. She’s blaming you,” Thompson pointed out. “No personal responsibility or accountability. It’s your fault if you believe this,” they said.
Apparently, those on the right were not the only people upset with Maddow’s performance, Page Six insiders said that executives at MSNBC’s parent network NBC were very angry with the segment because they were kept in the dark as it developed, but were made to shoulder the embarrassment of Maddow falling flat on her face, reports the Blaze.
A source told them that NBC found out about Maddow’s scoop at the same time the public did, and it appeared that the MSNBC president was trying to undermine NBC’s president, said the Blaze.
“It’s their cable network, but it’s still NBC News. [NBC] did not appreciate being kept in the dark … To hype such a big story and not really deliver is a bit embarrassing. Airing a story you’ve hyped 20 minutes into your broadcast makes it a lot less of a ‘breaking news’ story.”
